Earning his Eagle

Cherokee defeats Cherry Hill East, 2-0

Scout Jake Lazarow creates

flash drive safety bands

By ZANE CLARK

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

It was Cherokee against Cherry Hill East in girls varsity volleyball on Sept. 28 at Cherokee. The
Cherokee girls ended the day with a win against East, with Cherokee taking the first set, 25-13, and
the second set, 25-17. Pictured is Cherokee senior Nicole Ethridge preparing to hit the ball.

For Evesham resident and

Cherokee High School senior
Jake Lazarow, Scouting is in the
family.
As a young man, Lazarows father Lewis achieved the rank of
Eagle Scout and now leads BSA
Troop No. 100 of Evesham. Following in his fathers footsteps,
Lazarow has now achieved the
rank of Eagle Scout as well.
It was for that reason on Sept.
19 friends, family and members of
the community came together at
the Marlton Fieldhouse for a
Court of Honor ceremony where
Lazarow and fellow Troop No. 100
member Evan Bradley received
Scoutings highest achievement.
Lazarow recalls joining Cub
Scouts in first grade as a Tiger
Cub and said becoming an Eagle
was always an aspiration of his.
It did get tough with sports,
clubs and activities, and it got to
the point where I wasnt sure I
wanted to keep going because of
the stuff I was doing, but ultimately I made time for it because
it was something I wanted to do,
Lazarow said.

To become
an
Eagle
Scout, there
are multiple
requirements,
just some of
which include
earning
at
least 21 merit
badges, rising

Scout
rankings, serving a leadership position within a troop and completing an Eagle Scout service project.
Eagle Scout service projects
allow potential Eagle Scouts to
demonstrate their leadership capabilities through performing a
project for the benefit of the community.
Lazarow worked with the Evesham Township Police Department for his project to create and
distribute flash drive safety bands
that could be given to parents
after having their childrens personal information electronically
stored within.

Township submits application

for municipal park grant from county
Evesham hopes to make improvements to Green Lane Farms,
tot-lots at Westbury Chase, and Country Farms Park
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Evesham Township Council,
township manager Tom Czerniecki and director of community development Nancy Jamanow have
announced the parks they hope to
improve with this year's round of
funding from Burlington Countys annual municipal park grant
fund.
The county established the program to assist municipalities to
improve or develop outdoor parks
for active and passive recreation.
Jamanow said this year's applications were due before the end of
September and required public
discussion, and so at a recent
council meeting, Czerniecki and

Jamanow inventoried what improvements the township would

be applying for.
"Through Nancy's efforts,
we've been extremely successful
in obtaining grants to fix up a lot
of our pocket parks and neighborhood parks, basically replacing
tennis courts and other things as
needed, and it's been very well received in the community," Czerniecki said.
For the 2015 application, Jamanow said the township was applying for funds to continue working on the neighborhood parks
projects.
Jamanow said the application
includes work at Green Lane
Farms along North Maple Avenue
and North Locust Avenue, where

the town hopes to refurbish tennis courts, basketball courts and

some of the park's walking path.
Jamanow said the application
also includes the installation of
two swing sets at two tot-lots at
the Westbury Chase home subdivision.
The final area Jamanow said
the township hopes to target is
Country Farms Park along Country Farms Road.
Although the majority of
Country Farms Park is owned by
the Evesham Township School
District, Evesham Township actually owns tennis courts and
basketball courts at the park, as
well as a tennis wall and part of

Tourism in New Jersey isnt just about the Shore

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

hen you think about

tourism in New Jersey, the
first thing that pops into
your mind, most likely, is the Shore.
And why shouldnt it be? There is so
much focus on our coastline, and so
much of our lives here revolve around
the summertime rush to the beach.
But there is so much more our state
has to offer, and these other offerings
are on display front and center during
October.
Farms in New Jersey are popular
places for what has come to be known
as agritourism a booming industry
that involves any agriculturally-based
operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm. New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason, and there are
multiple farms in many places
throughout our state, both in more

rural places and in not-so-rural places

as well.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno toured some
local farms last week to help promote
the agritourism industry, which is
growing each year. According to the
state Department of Agriculture, New
Jersey ranks ninth in the nation in
agritourism, bringing in more than
$18 million per year.
As farms look for new ways to grow
revenue, they not only look for secondary crops but also toward runoff revenue streams from traditional
tourism areas such as apple and

pumpkin picking to hayrides, corn

mazes and farm tours.
October in New Jersey is one of the
best months to visit a farm. Apples are
ready to be plucked off the trees and
eaten raw or baked into delectable
pies. Pumpkins and gourds are ready
to be picked from the ground and used
as decorations for Halloween-inspired
themes inside and outside houses.
And farm stands are vibrant with fall
wreaths, hay, scarecrows and apple
cider.
Farming is such an important sector to our states economy and our
states image. So put on a pair of jeans,
grab a hoodie and head out to a local
farm this month. If you havent experienced agritourism in New Jersey
yet, October is the best month to do it.
Enjoy the season!

Residents can report crimes to police online

The Evesham Police Department provides residents the ability to report crimes
and activities online.
The purpose of this form is to allow Evesham residents to conveniently file police
reports from home, work or anywhere with
Internet access. The online reporting system not only provides a convenient way to
report crimes that do not require the presence of an officer, it greatly increases police productivity by freeing officers
to perform other law enforcement activities.

After completing the necessary information, the person reporting the information
will receive an incident number, and they
will be able to print the report for their
records.
Once a crime is reported, the department will follow up to ensure all information is accurate and answer any questions
that the reporting party may have.
Customer service will continue to be
paramount at the Evesham Police Department. The online reporting feature gives
the public another option in how they in-

Over the years, some of our

our dedication to customers.
We started selling gas logs and

Councilman Ken D'Andrea
said it "would have been nice" if
the township owned the parking
lot as well, which he believed
needed improvements, and the
township could improve the area
and provide better access to the
tennis and basketball courts.
Mayor Randy Brown wondered
if the school board might be interested in improving its section
of the park as well and said officials should look into the possibility.
"I think maybe the manager
should send a letter along with
Ms. Jamanow to the school district and say that 'we are working
to improve our section, but
maybe you guys work to improve
your section,'" Brown said.
D'Andrea also took time to
thank Jamanow and township officials for work done to parks in
town with previous years grants,
including cleanup efforts to the
park along Longhurst Road.
"I got a lot of great feedback,
and it's wonderful to see," D'Andrea said.
Jamanow said in the past, the
maximum level of grant funds allotted by the county through the
park development program has
been about $250,000, and the total
cost of the projects Evesham is
requesting funds for including all
matching funds is estimated to be
$271,700.

child, audio of the child speaking
and an editable PDF with additional information such as hair
color, identifying features, blood
type and more.
In the event of a child going
missing, a parent could then
quickly, succinctly and accurately
give the critical information to
the police handling the situation.
It all can be changed whenever the parent wants to, and it's
also password protected, so if it's
ever lost, nothing bad can happen
to it because its locked up,
Lazarow said.
According to Lazarow, he
raised about $1,600 through a
Kickstarter
fundraiser
and
helped create and distribute

about 100 bands at multiple Evesham community police events in

the last year.
About 200 leftover bands were
then given to the Evesham Police
to continue the program and keep
distributing the bands at future
events.
Now that the project is complete and his Court of Honor ceremony has passed, Lazarow describes a sense of relief and accomplishment at finally earning
his Eagle.
For it to work out and for the
project to have such a positive impact, it's definitely a great feeling
to be able to put my name and
project along all the other Scouts
who did really great projects,
Lazarow said.
Lazarow, now 18, said he hopes
to attend Pennsylvania State University as both his parents did,
while double majoring in creative

writing and recreation, park and

tourism management.
Lazarow is also now an official
assistant Scoutmaster with his
troop, and said he hopes to continue being involved with Scouting
throughout his life.
Without Scouting, I would not
be the leader I am today in the
community and my group of
friends, Lazarow said. Ive
learned how to lead and be a better person. If you sit in the back
and dont really talk, nothing ever
gets done.

Police visit Chesterbrook Academy

Special to The Sun

On Sept. 25, preschoolers at Chesterbrook Academy received a special visit from their local police department. Officers from the Evesham Township Police Department stopped by the school to decorate
cupcakes with students and speak about their jobs. Students presented the officers with handmade cards to thank them for all they
do. Students also had the chance to sit in a police car and test out
the sirens. Students have been learning the important role police officers have in helping the community.
