Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and


describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as
above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. (CCSS
Math.Content.K.6.A1)

1. Students will understand that animals come in different colors and shapes.
2. Describe the purposes of color in the animal world.
3. Use different colors and shapes to create pictures of animals.
The student will identify shapes by using the: I can name shapes work sheet.
Students will color the shapes using the shapes and color work sheet.
Students will draw an animal color and name the shape of the animal.

Modelling: Teacher will draw the word lion on the white board and write orange,
yellow, black, and brown on the board for the colors. Teacher will draw a triangle,
rectangle, circle, square, oval, and diamond on the white board.
Teacher will start building the lion with a circle for the head.

UDL Considerations Independent: Students will start on their two work sheets coloring and naming the
shapes.

RtI: Teacher will work one on one helping the student identify colors and shapes.

Gifted and Talented: Students can draw and color naming the colors and shapes of
three animals. Provide more challenging work sheets.
Transitions: Have pictures of animals on document camera for students to view
while they are coming into class from lunch and while working on their work sheets.

Draw an animal on the board and have the student identify what colors the animal
has and what shape.
As the students are working on the work sheets from the circle drawn for the lions
head add to triangles for the ears and a rectangle for the body.
Have a student hand out the worksheets.
Work with the students to help identify colors and shapes.

Teacher will ask if the students understand the lesson.

Student will work on two work sheets with colors and shapes. Student will draw a
shaped animal and color the animal. Student will share their shaped animal with the
class when they are done.

What are we learning and why? These five shapes are the basic shapes for learning
and using these in everyday life.

Closure

Have students post their drawing on the cork board named art to display their
drawings. Make sure all names are on drawings as this drawing will go into their
journal folder for assessment.
Have students discuss what they learned. Asked students to raise their hand if they
knew they could draw animals from shapes.

After the lesson ask yourself these questions and make notes for the next time this
lesson is taught.
