Veganism
Unsupersize Me. Dir. Juan Carlos Asse. Perf. Uan-Carlos Asse,Tracy
Ryan. 2013. DVD.

Vegan Diets: Findings from the Adventist Cohorts." Nutrients. MDPI, 27

America is known as one of the most obese countries in the
world; we struggle with over indulgence and self-control. Health and
fitness are huge topics in todays society. With social figures and
advertisement schemes we have a poor idea of a healthily lifestyle.
One of the most controversial diets is the vegan diet. Veganism like
vegetarianism does not consume any kind of meat. But, what makes
veganism different is they dont consume any kind of animal produced
produces. Strictly whole food plant based diet. There are three main
reasons why people become vegan, animal rights, the environment
and health. What makes this diet so appealing is that people are
seeing such significant health improvements and shedding pound after
pound. A popular documentary called Unsupersize Me was put on
Netflix and people started raving about this diet. According to Lap Tai
Le and Joan Sabate in their article Beyond Meatless, the Health Effects
of Vegan Diets: Findings from the Adventist Cohorts a poll in 2012
concluded that 5% of the American population are vegetarians and
only 2% of that are vegan. What made me so interested in this diet is
the fact that they are claiming to have such great health advantages to
becoming a vegan. There are many reasons why someone can choose
to become a vegan like health, environmental morals or ethics. But the
biggest issue when it comes to veganism is are we really getting all the
nutrients that we need in order to be healthy?
"Veganism Found to Be the Best Diet for Weight Loss | Eat This Not
That." Eat This Not That. 2015. Web. 07 May 2016.
To support the documentary Unsupersize Me and article on the
website EatThis states in their article Veganism Found to be The
Best Diet for Weight Loss states that Going vegan has worked for Bill
Clinton, Jay-Z and Beyonce, and a new study in the Journal of General
Internal Medicine indicates it will work for you, too. The researchers

compared results of a dozen dietsincluding Atkins, the American

Diabetes Association diet, and othersand found that those following a
vegan diet could lose 5 pounds more in the short-term than those
following traditional diet plans. (Vegetarians, who allow themselves
eggs and dairy, still fared well, losing slightly more than 3 pounds.)
Clearly this is such a big deal trend because it is showing great results.
Wilson, Deborah, Dr. "Eating Meat Is Linked to Obesity." PETA. Web. 04
May 2016. <http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-forfood/obesity/>.
As my first source I went to the animal activist group PETA, which
of course is going to promote plant-based diets due to their beliefs. But
PETA being such a large group has a lot of useful information on the
benefits of becoming a vegan. According to Dr. Deborah Wilson in her
article Eating Meat is Linked to Obesity she states Adopting a vegan
diet wont just help you slim down, it will also help you fight an array of
ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Dr. T.
Colin Campbell of Cornell University, arguably the foremost
epidemiologist in the world, states, Quite simply, the more you
substitute plant foods for animal foods, the healthier you are likely to
be. I now consider veganism to be the ideal diet. A vegan diet
particularly one that is low in fatwill substantially reduce disease
risks. Plus, weve seen no disadvantages from veganism. Her main
claim in this article is that a vegan diet is showing no negative affects
on a humans today and is only benefitting their overall life span.
What makes this article great is that this information is coming
from at doctor so she is super creditable. The only issue that I have
with the article is because since its on an animal activists website I
could make the assumption that she is in favor of the vegan diet
because she maybe supports the group as a whole. Considering that
she is a doctor and explaining all the benefits of this what is most
interesting is, if this diet is solving some of the biggest problems in the
world then why wouldnt more doctors be on board with the diet. Why
wouldnt more doctors want their sick patients to be able to diet and
get better?
"Why Go Vegan?" The Vegan Society. Web. 07 May 2016.
"Animal Death Statistics 2011." Animal Death Statistics 2011. Web. 07
May 2016.

With PETA being a huge animal rights groups they make it known
how they feel about the slaughtering of animals for food. But, they
arent the only ones that feel that way because according to an article
on The Vegan Society website called Why Go Vegan? they state It's
tempting to want to believe that the meat we eat is ethical, that our
'food animals' have lived full, happy lives and that they have
experienced no pain or fear at the slaughterhouse. Yet the sad truth is
that all living creatures (even those labelled 'free range' or 'organic')
fear death, just as we do. No matter how they are treated when alive,
they all experience the same fear when it comes to slaughter. So,
clearly PETA is not the only group that is calling attention to the issue.
According to the FarmUSA website they state In addition to the 9,278
million animals who were slaughtered, the total figure includes the 875
million animals, or 8.6%, who died lingering deaths from disease,
injury, starvation, suffocation, maceration, or other atrocities of animal
farming and transport. It should be noted that the U.S. is a net exporter
of both live animals and processed meat, so the number of animals
actually consumed in the U.S. was less than the number killed. These
are two groups trying to prove the same point at two different angles.
One is pointing out that it is a fact that animals feel fear just as much
as we do and the other is giving statistical evidence that animals are
not dying just for our food, but of mistreatment and disease.
Normally PETA is the huge animal rights group that gets all the
attention for the crazy lengths they go to when it comes to stopping
animal rights, but what we dont hear about are all of the other groups
that also support this ethical controversy. I think both of these websites
are great examples of how it can be approached simply because they
are bother approaching them in different ways. I think it is really
important to see the actual numbers of what is going on because it
truly opens the eyes of readers to see what is actually going on.
Rhetorically I think this is the most effective way to get a readers
attention to an issue like this because it really makes the true issue
known.
Kris Gunnars. "5 Reasons Why Vegan Diets May Be a Bad Idea." RSS
20. 2013. Web. 04 May 2016.
But, according to Kris Gunnars article 5 Reasons Why Vegan
Diets May be a Bad Idea she states Because B12 is critical for life
and isnt found in any amount in plants (except some types of algae), it

is by far the most important nutrient that vegans must be concerned

with. In fact, B12 deficiency is very common in vegans, one study
showing that a whopping 92% of vegans are deficient in this critical
nutrient (1). So here is the question how can we be getting adequate
nutrients from a plant-based diet. If most vegans are lacking vital
nutrients how can they actually be feeling good and healthy? She also
makes valid point when saying, The thing is that animal foods meat,
fish, eggs and dairy products for those who can tolerate them, are
extremely nutritious. They are loaded with high quality protein, healthy
fats, vitamins, minerals and various lesser known nutrients that have
important effects on health. There may be ethical or religious reasons
not to eat animals I get it. But there is no scientifically valid health
reason to completely eliminate animal foods. Her overall point is that
the vegan diet can be beneficial to some people but so can other diets.
A diet should be based off someones age, health, and activity level.
I thought that this article was really fare when it came to talking
about the pro and cons of veganism, it made me as the reader feel like
she was appealing to all angles of the issue. It was a super wellrounded article but I dont know much about how creditable she really
is. What helps with the creditability of this article is the sources that
have been sited. She refers to the American Diabetes Association for
information regarding the diet, which is a huge organization so, a great
source to use.
Tuso, Philip J., Mohamed H. Ismail, Benjamin P. Ha, and Carole
Bartolotto. "Nutritional Update for Physicians: Plant-Based Diets." The
Permanente Journal. The Permanente Journal. Web. 04 May 2016.
Now for my last source I have researched a medical journal that
talks about all of the disadvantages and advantages of veganism. It
uses studies that have been done by multiple kinds of doctors to better
clarify the benefits of the diet. The medical journal that I have used if
from the NCBI website. Carole Bartolotto, MA, RD, Benjamin P Ha, MD,
Mohamed H Ismail, MD and Philip J Tuso, MD have all concluded this
research in the article they state A study in the Journal of the
American Medical Association reported that women with breast cancer
who regularly consumed soy products had a 32% lower risk of breast
cancer recurrence and a 29% decreased risk of death, compared with
women who consumed little or no soy. An analysis of 14 studies,
published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that

increased intake of soy resulted in a 26% reduction in prostate cancer

risk. These doctors are providing statics based on the research done
strictly based off plant-based diets. Overall through out they refer to
the research of others and their own that A healthy, plant-based diet
requires planning, reading labels, and discipline. The recommendations
for patients who want to follow a plant-based diet may include eating a
variety of fruits and vegetables that may include beans, legumes,
seeds, nuts, and whole grains and avoiding or limiting animal products,
added fats, oils, and refined, processed carbohydrates. The major
benefits for patients who decide to start a plant-based diet are the
possibility of reducing the number of medications they take to treat a
variety of chronic conditions, lower body weight, decreased risk of
cancer, and a reduction in their risk of death from ischemic heart
disease. So what they are saying in their conclusion is that overall
plant-based diets help benefit people who suffer from certain illnesses
like diabetes slowly get off their medications and help prevent further
illness.
Not only is this article creditable but, its laying out real
statistical facts and studies that have been done to help figure out the
benefits. This medical journal gives a clear picture of what really is
evolved in veganism. It is a really in depth detailed lifestyle but can be
rewarding in certain circumstances. I think rhetorically these doctors
are reaching out to other medical professionals so everyone can be on
the same page and have a good understanding on plant-based diets.
Overall these sources I chose based off the different views and
angles people can come from for plant-based diets. This is a huge
controversial debt for many reasons but I think the one we should
really consider which is the health alternatives. While most vegans will
have to supplement most of the vitamins that they lack from eating
meat, you can still live a healthy lifestyle as long as you are
investigating the nutritional information of certain foods that you will
need in order to maintain a balanced diet. We have the view of a
nutritionist who is supported by an animal rights activists group, which
states how beneficial the diet, is and how we are meant to only
consume plant based food. Then we have an outlook that supports the
fact that we need meat in our diet and in order to get all of our
nutrients naturally we need to consume meat. Lastly, we have medical
professionals that have collect research and have conducted case
studies that prove there are positive health benefits to the vegan diet.

In conclusion, there are many ways this topic can be researched and
there are many people that this topic affects every day.
