Lesson Plan for 4th Grade Boomwhackers

Objective: To learn how to play an ostinato pattern in an ensemble.


Vocab word: Ostinato
Materials Needed: Boomwhackers, rhythm cards, poster with ostinato rhythm to put
on the board
Procedure:
1. Practice reading rhythm by showing rhythm cards with quarter note, eighth
note, and quarter rest rhythms. Students look at card, then say rhythm out
loud as a class.
2. Have the class learn lines 1 and 2 of the ostinato pattern with body
percussion
Line 1: claps
Line 2: snap
3. Have the class learn lines 3 and 4 of the ostinato pattern with body
percussion
Line 3: stomps
Line 4: claps
4. Break the class in half, half the class does the body percussion for lines 1 and
2, the other half of the class does the body percussion for lines 3 and 4.
Switch!
5. Break the class into 4 groups, assign a line to each group to do with body
percussion, then have them all rotate so that they do all the parts.
6. Pass out boomwhackers: 1st demonstrate proper use of boomwhacker to class
(no whacking each other! No throwing or hitting: boomwhackers will be
played on the floor) 2nd pick one student to demonstrate proper use of
boomwhacker with their correct rhythm. 3rd pass them out to the rest of the
class.
7. Have class complete ostinato rhythm on boomwhackers.

Star Wars Boomwhackers!


Day 2: Learn triplets and then star wars on boomwhackers.

Day 2: Add harmonies and ostinato underneath melody, play with entire class.
