The stereotypical version of child abduction by a stranger is
the classic form of "kidnapping,
Abduction or kidnapping by strangers (from outside the
family, natural or legal guardians) who steal a child for
criminal purposes which may include:

extortion, to elicit a ransom from the guardians for the child's return
illegal adoption, a stranger steals a child with the intent to rear the
child as their own or to sell to a prospective adoptive parent
human trafficking, a stranger steals a child with the intent to exploit
the child themselves or by trade in a list of possible abuses including
slavery, forced labor, sexual abuse, or even illegal organ trading
murder

HOW CAN A CHILD GO

For most people, people wonder How can


a child go missing when the parents are
always with them?.
There are ways a child can go missing.
Children run away. Predators grab children
and take them.
More often than not, the children are
harmed emotionally, physically, and
spiritually. Child abduction IS child abuse.

WHY SHOULD I CARE?


CHILDREN ARE INNOCENT AND DEFENSELESS
unable to make their own choices and save
themselves when placed in perilous situations.
It is up to adults to step in and make a difference
for these children.
Hey! My children are in danger! Please help
them! but remain ignored and unheard.
And the children continue to suffer, and the
chances that they may be killed or seriously
harmed soon increases as time goes by. Literally.

DAMAGED CHILDREN GROW UP TO BE DAMAGED ADULTS


who will one day be walking around in our society
maybe living next door to you or your loved ones.
They carry their many layers of scars from the abduction
and abuse, their sense of abandonment, harboring anger,
thinking that no one cared enough to help them when they
were defenseless
So who cares how they release that anger now?
Every child is different, of course.
Some take their pain and channel it into becoming better
people.
Sometimes, the years of festering anger and betrayal
gnaws at their soul, turning them from joyous, innocent
children into angry, revenge-oriented adults.

SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS


Be sure to go over the rules with your children about whose
homes they can visit when youre not there and discuss the
boundaries of where they can and cant go in the neighborhood.
Always listen to your children and keep the lines of
communication open. Teach your children to get out of
dangerous or uncomfortable situations right away, and practice
role-playing and basic safety skills with them.
Teach your children in whose car they may ride. Children should
be cautioned never to approach any vehicle, occupied or not,
unless accompanied by a parent or trusted adult.
Make sure children know their names, address, telephone
numbers and how to use the telephone.

Choose babysitters with care. Obtain references from


family, friends and neighbors.
Know your childs friends, their parents, addresses and
contact numbers.
Have a set of rules for your kids to follow and enforce
them.
Working and/or busy parents must take the time to relearn
their children and their habits.
Get involved in your childrens lives. Be A Parent!

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHILDREN


Always check first with your parents or the person in
charge before you go anywhere or do anything.
Always take a friend when you play or go somewhere.
Dont be tricked by adults who offer you special treats or
gifts or ask you for help.
Dont be afraid to say no and get away from any situation
that makes you feel uncomfortable or confused. Trust
your feelings.
Dont get into a car or go near a car with someone in it
unless you are with your parents or a trusted adult.

Never take a ride from someone without


checking first with your parents.
Never go into a public restroom by yourself.
Never go alone to the mall, movies, video
arcades or parks.
Stay safe when youre home alone by
keeping the door locked. Do not open the
door for or talk to anyone who stops by..

SAFETY TIPS FOR TEENS


Keep your parents informed of your whereabouts.
When taking a trip have your route mapped out and travel time
included. Call the party you are visiting to let them know your
departure time and call home upon your arrival.
Dont make a habit of traveling alone, i.e., walking, jogging, bike
riding.
Stay away from things that may make you vulnerable, i.e., drugs
& alcohol.
If you drive a vehicle - dont pick up strangers or hitchhikers.
Stay away from remote areas that you are unfamiliar with.

EFFECTS

EFFECTS
Children are resilient but even when
children are recovered and reunited
with their family the trauma does not
necessarily end.
Children who are abducted, by a person
unknown to them, can suffer serious
psychological and emotional trauma.
There can be long-lasting effects
psychological on the children.

Due to all the media attention


psychological effects can extend beyond
the victim and family to children and
adults not even connected to the crime.
Parents are fearful it could happen to their
child and children may fear they too could
be abducted.
This fear and the emotional stress it brings
on can stay with parents and children for
long periods of time.

Long-lasting effects include :

fearfulness and anxiety


fear of public places
fear of being around strangers
Nightmares
poor concentration
underachievement in school
mistrust of even familiar adults and family members.

Children may stop growing emotionally,


socially, and academically, and also experience
regressive behaviors
