Henry Fayol

Henry Fayol was a French mining engineer and director who is considered the father of modern operational management theory. He started his career in a coal mine company in France and eventually became its general manager in 1880, saving it from bankruptcy through his leadership. Based on his experience in workshops, Fayol felt there could be universally applicable principles of management. He identified important functions of management as planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling. Fayol also proposed principles of management such as the division of work, authority and responsibility, discipline, unity of command, and esprit de corps.
