TEE Views

Trans-oesophageal echocardiography (TOE or TEE) involves inserting an ultrasound probe into the esophagus to obtain images of the heart. The document discusses preparing the patient for the procedure, inserting the probe, and obtaining transverse and longitudinal views of the heart. It also mentions visualizing the aorta and using Doppler imaging. The document provides a table cross-referencing the views obtained during TOE with the standard views recommended by the American Society of Echocardiographers.

In presenting TOE images we've tried to be systematic. We've followed the really old-
fashioned practice of working systematically through 'transverse' and 'longitudinal' views,
despite the fact that modern probes allow multiplane images! We believe that this approach
gives novices a really good grounding in the anatomy, and minimises disorientation ---
TOE can be very confusing.

The following table provides cross-references to the American Society of

Echocardiographers' "Standard Views" for trans-oesophageal echo (TOE, TEE). Although
these views provide an excellent basic platform for describing the echo, we cannot over-
emphasise the need to regard TOE examination of the heart as a continuum rather than just
a 'set of views'. It's also important to assimilate the whole package of appropriate use of
TOE, and correct transmission of information to the patient and to colleagues, and not just
the technical aspects.

Some of the following images are far from perfect, and we have 'greyed out' images where
no good view is currently obtainable on the site.
