Cal Poly Hosts its 9th Annual Wine Festival

knowledge. To stem off this growing philosophy blossoms the Cal Poly Wine Festival, comprised of thirty The wine industry is often seen as the most artistic and luxurious asset to California agriculture. It is an industry of little competition, as most consumers could agree there is no greater complement to a bowl of spaghetti bolognese than a sharp glass of Zin. To Cal Poly students and faculty, the wine industry is a vice for learning and achievement. The Wine and Viticulture program uses a hands-on Learn-by-Tasting approach, a spin off from the Cal Poly slogan: Learnby-Doing. This approach equips the young leaders with extensive wine business, enology, and viticulture wine passionate students looking to become the future leaders in the wine and viticulture profession.

History of the Cal Poly Wine Festival

The Cal Poly Wine Festival has a fairly simple history. Nine years ago, an aspiring senior wanted to create an event where students and community members could spend an entire weekend learning and appreciating wine. Since his creation, the Wine Festival has blossomed into a multi-faceted event with over 60 wineries, two brand new educational seminars, a live auction and over 1,600 guests. The Wine Festival is now run entirely by thirty dedicated students from an assortment of majors. These committee members begin planning for the April festival in October! Their efforts are far from ignored. The festival has become a vice for any Central Coast residents to gather together under the warm Santa Margarita sun to sip wine and discuss varietals with friends.

Who We Are

he word education blended with wine is one pairing most students do not want to sample. Wine and Viticulture majors at Cal Poly are the select few in the collegiate population more concerned with the art of the wine rather than its alcohol content. What students do not realize is this educational seminar is no drab professor lecture: it is a once in college lifetime opportunity to glimpse how the industry has morphed its way to the top of the agriculture pyramid. This year, the Cal Poly Wine Festival will be featuring three Educational Seminars profiling some of the most prestigious professionals in the industry.
