Aussies must get behind their troops

WITH flags flying at halfmast this Anzac Day, Goodna RSL President David Christie has called on Australians to rally behind their troops and veterans. Mr Christie a Vietnam veteran said Australia lacked pride in itself and its troops and believed criticism of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was misdirected. He praised recent articles by journalist Madonna King highlighting the psychological harm being done to our soldiers from repeated deployment to Afghanistan. He said without more support from civilians at home, soldiers returning from war zones would suffer. He called for Anzac Day to become a full public holiday similar to Christmas Day and Good Friday. University of Queensland professor Graeme Orr disagrees with Mr Christie, saying the pendulum has swung too far towards political correctness when discussing military matters. "To make criticisms of how we might be waging war, or how we might be engaged in war, is seen as being unsupportive," Dr Orr said.

"The kindergarten will further add to the students accessing the planned new school chapel," he said. Division 1 councillor David Morrison said the chapel would be a fitting reflection of the Christian ethos of The Springfield Anglican College and a place in which the school community could join together. The college is a Prep to Year 12 co-educational institution owned by the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane. On another note, siblings Ruthie and Jake Forrest have secured $500 for themselves and $300 for the anglican college by winning a youth busking competition in Forest Lake. Ruthie, of Year 12, is an accomplished cellist and college captain.
