Dear Parents, Welcome to the home assessment for the WPPSI-III. Please note that this will not take the place of an assessment done by an education or testing expert, nor is it intended to give you an idea of how your child will score when actually evaluated. There are 13 sections in this assessment, so we are going to deliver it to you in 4 parts, 3 or 4 sections at a time. We highly recommend that you do this assessment in these smaller chunks rather than saving all of them up and trying to do everything in one sitting. The reason for this is simple. The purpose of this assessment is to give you a general idea of your childs strengths and weaknesses with respect to the different types of questions that will be asked on an actual test. Doing it in just a few sections at a time will tell you exactly that and will give you an idea of what you need to work on together. You might think that sitting down and doing it all at once will give you a better idea of how your child will test during a full evaluation. That isnt really the case. You arent a trained psychologist who knows how to transition from section to section and move a child seamlessly through all the tasks in a test; youre a parent and your child will not necessarily perform for you the way he will on an actual test. It is difficult for any parent to recreate what will happen in the testing room. But you can, by working in smaller time-blocks, get a good sense of your childs strengths and weaknesses with the various abilities hell be asked to demonstrate in a testing situation, so that is what we will focus on doing. Heres what you need to know about doing these assessments: Each daily assessment you receive will be divided into 3 sections: Parent Instructions Childs Stimulus Score Sheet Before you sit down with your child, carefully read through the Parent Instructions. Make sure that you understand how to do each section. Next, gather the materials youll need for the various types of questions. Three sections require you to make something that will be used in the questions. These will be explained in the directions you get each day. Seat your child comfortably at a desk where he can work. The room should be well lit. Make sure he isnt hungry, tired, or missing out on his favorite TV show.
Dont describe what youre doing as a test or assessment. Just refer to these as workbook pages where youll get to do some fun, practice school activities. As you start each section, give your child the appropriate Childs Stimulus pages hell need to work with. With the exception of coding (which requires pencil and paper), your child can respond to every item through speaking, pointing to the correct answer, or moving manipulatives around. Using the score sheet, keep track of how your child does with each section by giving her 2, 1, or 0 points for items she gets right or wrong. Dont get too hung up on the scoring. The most important thing is for you to get a handle on what your child can do well and what is difficult for her. If she does not do well with a particular section of the assessment, there are references on the score sheets to chapters in Testing For Kindergarten that offer advice to improve her skills, along with specific activities to do to strengthen abilities wherever she is struggling. During the assessment, dont give feedback one way or another as to how your child is doing. Just encourage him and praise him for trying, working so hard, focusing well, etc. That is what a tester will do. Your goal here is to get a handle on your childs abilities. Working with her can come later.

About The Weschler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence III (WPPSI) The WPPSI is an IQ test given to children between the ages of 2 7. It was developed in 1967 and has been revised twice. Like other IQ tests, it was designed to measure a very specific kind of intelligence, the kind that children need to succeed in an academic setting language, knowledge, memory, mathematics, spatial, motor skills, cognitive abilities and speed of thinking. An educational psychologist administers the WPPSI to the child in a session that lasts about an hour. This test has two sections Verbal and Performance (or non-verbal). Within each section are various subtests that evaluate aspects of verbal and performance abilities. Verbal questions tend to measure crystallized intelligence, which depends on your childs knowledge of words, information, and the world around her concrete things she has learned at home, pre-school, through life experience, exposure to language and her culture. In the test, verbal skills are evaluated in sections covering vocabulary, knowledge and comprehension. Performance questions assess fluid intelligence, which relies on your childs ability to solve visual, spatial, or abstract problems. In the test, performance skills are evaluated in sections where children are asked to copy block patterns, do puzzles, reason through spatial problems or demonstrate fine-motor skills.
PARENT INSTRUCTIONS
To assess this skill, you will have to put your own arts and crafts skills to work. Choose two brightly colored square Post-it notepads (i.e. pink and orange). I like using the three-inch squares. Use a glue stick and glue twelve pink and twelve orange squares onto a piece of cardboard. When the glue has dried, cut out all twenty-four squares. Keep the edges straight. Take four pink and four orange squares and cut them diagonally into triangles. Keep the edges straight. Take four pink and four orange squares and cut them in half into rectangles. Keep the edges straight.
Now youll have two sets of square, rectangle and triangle pattern blocks. Here is what they will look like:

Section I - Block Design Parent Instructions (pages 15 - 18 Child Stimulus) Note: These pattern blocks are different from the materials used on the actual test. However, in working with these, your child will be able to demonstrate the underlying skill of replicating patterns that is needed for the actual test. If you purchased IQ Fun Park, you can use the pattern tiles from that test kit to make similar designs to those in this assessment. Go from very simple to more complex designs as we do in the assessment below. Using your duel colored pattern blocks, create a design and ask your child to copy it. Give your child 2 points if he completes the design correctly within the specified time. Give him 1 point if he completes the design correctly but not within the time limit. A design is considered incorrect if the block is more than 30 degrees off from the angle that is pictured or if there is more than separating the blocks. In other words, neatness counts! When showing your child the stimulus design, cover the other images on the page with a blank piece of paper to prevent distraction. 1.

Section 2 Picture Identification Parent Instructions (page 19 Child Stimulus) This section of the test covers the vocabulary your child should have acquired by the time hes tested. The Assessment Place the stimulus vocabulary questions in front of your child. Ask your child to point to the item named. Your child gets 1 point for each correct answer and 0 points for incorrect answers.
Point to the hat. Point to the lamp. Point to the butterfly. Point to the soap. Point to the broom. Point to the knife. Point to the book. Point to the shoe.
Here, your child will be asked to choose pictures that go together or have characteristics in common. When showing your child the stimulus question, cover the other images on the page with a blank piece of paper to prevent distraction. Before doing the assessment questions, youll want to show your child how to do a picture concept question. Here is an example:
You: Look at the pictures in this row. Two of the pictures have something in common. Can you point to the two pictures that go together? The flowers go together. Thats right!
The Assessment Place the stimulus picture concept questions in front of your child. Practice the example question. Go to question #1 and ask your child to point two pictures that have something in common or go together. When you get to the rows that have six pictures, ask your child to point to the three pictures that go together. Your child gets 1 point if he gets the right answer within 30 seconds. Your child gets 0 points if he misses the answer or if he doesnt get the answer within 30 seconds.
