Over the last couple of months the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme has been rolled out across East Lancashire. If you are aged 60 69, youll be sent bowel screening kits every two years. The screening programme is gradually extending to include everyone aged 60 74 years, but this hasnt happened everywhere yet. If you are aged 70 or over, you can request a kit by phoning 0800 707 60 60. The screening kits can help detect bowel cancer early, before you have any symptoms. The earlier the diagnosis, the better your chances of survival. Bowel cancer is Englands second most common cancer, with around 34,000 new cases each year. When it comes to cancer death, its the second biggest killer, but it neednt be that way. Regular bowel cancer screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer. Bowel cancer affects both men and women. Four out of five people diagnosed with the disease are over 50 and those with a family history of bowel cancer are more at risk. However, the sooner a patient is diagnosed, the better their chances of successful treatment. Over 90% of those diagnosed with early stage bowel cancer are successfully treated. A trip to your doctors surgery could save your life. The Lancashire & South Cumbria is currently promoting the Be Clear on Bowel Cancer Campaign that is running nationally. If youve had blood in your poo or looser poo for 3 weeks, your doctor wants to know. Chances are its nothing to worry about, but these symptoms could be signs of bowel cancer, so tell your doctor. Other bowel cancer symptoms include; A pain/lump in your tummy, feeling more tired than usual for a length of time and loss of weight. Finding bowel cancer early makes it more treatable and could save your life. If you are concerned about any symptoms, please contact your GP or visit NHS Direct Online.

The Diabetes UKs Healthy Lifestyle Roadshow visited Nelson this September, to help get people tested for diabetes. The qualified staff offered people a free Type 2 diabetes risk assessment. Pendle Community Radio invited the Diabetes UK team to their studios to help promote their roadshow and encourage people to visit the unit and get assessed. From having appeared on the radio the Diabetes UK mobile unit had a great increase in people wanting to get tested, resulting in long queues. Many people told the staff that they were keen listeners of Pendle Community Radio and only came to visit them after hearing about them on the radio. The risk assessment test being offered by Diabetes UK indicated a persons risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. If this risk was moderate to high, people would then get referred to their GP for advice or tests.
People visiting the mobile unit also had an opportunity to meet an on-site dietician. The professional advised people on how to make lifestyle changes by adopting a healthy diet; low in fat, salt and sugar and taking regular physical activity. It is estimated that approx. 7,800 people across East Lancashire have Type 2 diabetes but arent aware of it. The roadshow aimed to tackle this issue by highlighting the risk factors and encouraging the public to make lifestyle changes where possible. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, include being overweight or having a large waist, being aged over 40 (or over 25 in black and South Asian people) and having a close relative with diabetes. At-risk waist measurements are 37in. or more for men, except those of South Asian origin, who are at risk at 35in. or more, and 31.5in. or more for all women.
Listener of PCR visiting the Diabetes UK mobile unit after hearing about them on the radio.
With South Asians being at a high risk of developing Diabetes , Pendle Community Radio felt it was important to get this message out to the South Asian community present in Lancashire particularly Nelson. Staff at Pendle Community Radio are pleased they could help get that message out to people. For anyone who couldnt attend the Roadshow, there are still ways of accessing the diabetes risk assessment, by taking the free Diabetes UK Risk Score test online at www.diabetes.org.uk/roadshow/ riskscore1. If after taking the test you find yourself at a moderate or high risk of developing the condition then please visit your GP for further advice.

Two budding climbers from Lancashire, Mudassar Ali from Pendle and Zafer Shakir from Preston climbed Britains three highest mountains over three weekends for charity, Snowdon - Wales (3,560ft), Scafell Pike - England (3,209ft) and Ben Nevis - Scotland (4,409).

Zafer Shakir, on the other hand, decided to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation as his father died from a heart attack when he was young.

Snowdon and Scafell mountains provided ideal weather conditions for climbing however nearing the top the weather conditions became very windy, nevertheless the climb was a success. Ben Nevis provided a different challenge with a mixture of weather conditions; though fog, rain and snow were all experienced the climb was successful. The aim of climbing the three mountains was to raise money for Derian House Childrens Hospice in Chorley, Lancashire and British Heart Foundation. After seeing the excellent care and support provided by Derians Hospice to Muhammad Murtaza, a 15 Year old teenager who suffers from muscular dystrophy, and noticing that Derians Hospice relies mainly on public funding to provide its services, Mudassar decided to assist in raising funds for this charity.
DERIAN HOUSE CHILDRENS HOSPICE Charity Registration No. 1005165 Providing specialist care & support for children and young people with a life threatening illness. The hospice is open 365 days a year and the care is completely free to families. With more than 2.85 million needed each year, it remains almost totally reliant on voluntary funding. BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION Charity Registration No. 225971 The British Heart Foundation is the nation's heart charity. Every day they save lives, through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients.

Hollins Technology College paid a visit to the PCR studios this July to help raise awareness about alcohol, drugs and different faiths. Presenter Waqar, also a teacher at Hollins Technology College, handed over the radio waves to the students to allow them to educate the PCR audience. The students presented features throughout the day that included raps, songs and interviews. The students had a great time engaging with the audience and feeling empowered. Whilst educating them about alcohol, drugs and different faiths. Shisha smoking was a topic tackled by one of the students who felt the need to highlight its harm for the younger audience. We thank the students and staff of Hollins Technology College for visiting the studios and hope to see them again.
