BC0 series
BA BC0 series offers a line of low saturation type regulators that can supply as low output current as 1A. The output voltage precision appears 2%. By the lineup of output voltage, the package lineup of surface mounted (TO252) and insertion (TO220FP), with or without of ON / OFF switch that makes the circuit current 0A at shutdown, and combination of ADJ and output voltage 1.5V to 10V, the series brings a variety of lineups. It can be used for a wide range of applications including TV, HDD, PC, DVD, and so forth. This series has a built-in over-current protection circuit that prevents IC breakdown owing to output short circuit and the like, and a built-in overheating protection circuit that keeps IC from thermal destruction due to overload conditions and so forth.

For the applications in the higher ambient temperature (Ta) than 25C, please refer to Fig.1, Fig.2 Thermal derating characteristic. The IC characteristics are temperature dependent. A device may deteriorate or may be damaged if the temperature exceeds the maximum junction temperature TjMAX. In order to avoid instantaneous damage of the IC and to ensure the dependable ling operation, the thermal factors must be considered when the circuit is designed. Fig.1 shows the allowable dissipation thermal derating characteristic of (SMP-5) package. The shaded area is an allowable dissipation range for the IC. Even if the ambient temperature (Ta) is a normal temperature (25C), the IC junction temperature (Tj) is considerably higher. Operate the IC within the allowable power dissipation (Pd) shown in Fig.1.

Terminal peripheral setting and notes
VCC terminal Be sure to add capacitor (0.33F or higher) in between VCC and GND. The capacity value may very with applications, so check your application and make your design with a sufficient margin. GND terminal
BC0 series
Set the potential of the set ground same as that of the IC ground so that there is no difference in potential. If there is a difference between the potential of the set ground and that of the IC ground, set voltage will not be output precisely leading to unstable conditions, therefore, make the ground pattern as wide as possible, and keep the set ground and the IC ground as close as possible, so as to decrease impedance. CTL terminal

In the operation power source voltage range, the CTL terminal becomes ON at 2.0V or higher, and becomes OFF at 0.8V or below.

As for the capacitor, if its capacity changes due to temperature change or the like, the original characteristics of the IC may not be obtained. Therefore, it is recommended to use a tantalum capacitor whose characteristics are preferable even at low temperatures, and whose equivalent series resistance (ESR) is small. The oscillation occurs when ESR is too high too low. Refer to the ESR characteristics in Fig.18, and use the IC within the stable operation range.

Other notes About a protection circuit Over- current protection circuit As for output, a over-current protection circuit according to the current performance is built in, which prevents IC breakdown in case of the load short circuit. This protection circuit is a "-shaped" current limit circuit, and is designed so that even if large current flows in a large capacity capacitor, the current should be limited and it should not be latched. However, this protection circuit is effective for protection against the breakdown by a sudden accident, and is not for continuous protection circuit operations or use at transition. And as for the current performance, it has negative characteristics to temperature, therefore, pay attention in heat design.

Thermal overload protection circuit (Thermal) A temperature protection circuit is built in for protecting the IC from thermal destruction. As shown previously, it should be used within the permissible loss range, while, in the case when a status exceeding permissible loss continues, the chip temperature Tj rises and the temperature protection circuit works. When the temperature protection circuit works, the operations of circuit stop. Then, when the chip temperature Tj drops, the circuit starts its operations at once, accordingly output repeats ON and OFF. (The temperature at which the temperature protection circuit works is when the chip temperature Tj reaches at 150C.) If it is left in overload status, the heat excursion occurs, and the IC may see breakdown, therefore, avoid leaving it in overload status. Strong magnetic field When used within a strong magnetis field, be aware that the possibility of malfunction exists. About adverse current In order to prevent the IC breakdown in the case when reverse flow current flows into the IC, it is recommended to make a circuit to let current go by putting a diode in between Vcc terminal and Vo terminal.

2.2 [Recommended flux and cleaning conditions] (1) Flux Rosin flux with little chloride content (chloride content 0.2wt%) (2) Ultrasonic waves cleaning conditions Frequency : 28kHz Ultrasonic waves output : Max. 15W / litter Solvent : Alcoholic solvent is recommended. (From our viewpoint respecting the ozone layer preservation regulations, we do not recommend cleaning by chlorofluorocarbon solvent and chloride solvent.) Time : Within 30 seconds (however, within 3 minutes in the case not to use ultrasonic waves.) Liquid temperature : Max. 40C <Notes> There shall be no resonance in the device. The device or the printed board shall not directly contact the vibration source. During cleaning or in the status where cleaning liquid attached to the device, the indication surface shall not be scrubbed by a brush or a hand. From our viewpoint respecting the ozone layer preservation regulations, we do not recommend cleaning by chlorofluorocarbon solvent and chloride solvent (1.1.1- tri chloro ethane.)

2.3 [Notes on mounting of the surface mounting packages] The package of a plastic IC is made of resin, therefore, when left in natural environment, it absorbs moisture. When heat at packaging works on a moistured package, especially in surface packaging packages, moisture resistance may be deteriorated due to the boundary separation, and package cracks may occur, therefore, pay attention to the followings. (1) The product shall be stored in a place at temperature 5 - 30C and relative humidity 5010%RH. (2) If this package is within the recommended mounting conditions, and even if it is moistured status at packaging, there is no need for special drying processing. Therefore, no moisture prevention packaging is performed.
2.4 [Solder dip recommendation conditions] (1) Flux and cleaning recommended conditions (a) Flux Rosin flux with little chloride content (chloride content 0.2wt% or below) (b) Ultrasonic waves cleaning conditions Frequency : 28kHz Ultrasonic waves output : Max. From our viewpoint respecting the ozone layer preservation regulations, we do not recommend cleaning by chlorofluorocarbon solvent and chloride solvent (1.1.1- tri chloro ethane), however, we judge that these will not deteriorate the quality or the reliability if our recommended cleaning conditions are maintained and controlled. (2) Solder dip conditions

Notes in the Dip soldering method mounting (1) Please do not use other soldering methods when this flow-soldering method is used. (2) Please wash off flux residue completely after flow-soldering due to the influence on the reliability of the other parts or board wiring. (3) Partial heat supply method (by soldering iron) Conditions when partial heat supply method (by soldering iron) is used ; Temperature : 350CMAX Time : 3sec / pin MAX
