M.E. DEGREE EXAMINATION, APRIL/MAY 2003. First Semester Power Electronics and Drives PX 132 ANALYSIS OF INVERTERS Time : Three hours Answer ALL questions. PART A (10 2 = 20 marks) 1. What is the need for connecting diodes in antiparallel with switches? 2. What are the main features of Bridge configuration employed in inverters? 3. Write the Fourier series expression for the output voltage and current obtained from single phase full bridge inverter. 4. What is meant by load commutation? Which type of inverter is called load commutated inverter? 5. What are the disadvantages of basic parallel inverter? 6. What is the circuit turnoff time for the parallel inverter feeding resistive load? 7. What are the features of current source inverter? 8. State the reason why low power devices cannot be used in a current source inverter. 9. What is the need for controlling the voltage at the output terminal of an inverter? Maximum : 100 marks

10.Compare ZCS and ZVS converters. PART B (5 16 = 80 marks) 11.Describe modified McMurray half bridge inverters with appropriate voltage and current waveforms. Derive the expressions for the commutating components L and C. 12.(a) What are the limitations of basic series inverter? Draw the modified series inverter circuit and explain how the basic series inverter limitations are overcome. Also explain the time sharing inverter principle for high frequency series inverter. Or (b) Explain the working of parallel inverter with a neat diagram employing feedback diodes. Draw the voltage and current waveforms. Explain what care should be taken to avoid commutation failure. 13.(a) Discuss the principle of working of three phase VSI feeding a resistive connected load for 180 gating thyristor with relevant equivalent circuits. Draw the output line and phase voltage waveforms. Applying Fourier series expansion, show that triplon harmonics are absent for the line voltages. Or (b) Describe modified McMurray Bedford halfbridge inverter employing complementary commutation. Write down the expression for the commutating components and circuit turnoff time. 14.(a) Draw and explain the operation of single phase capacitor commutated current source inverter with resistive load. Draw the related voltage and current waveforms. What are the design considerations? Obtain the expression for the output voltage, turnoff time tc and average value of input voltage. Or (b) Describe a single phase auto sequential commutated CSI with L load. Draw the waveforms for gating signal capacitor voltage and current

and the load current. Find the circuit turnoff time and other expressions governing its performance. 15.(a) Describe the L type ZCS resonant converter with relevant circuits and waveforms. Or (b) Explain the output voltage control by PWM using the following techniques : (i) (ii) Single phase modulation Symmetrical multiple pulse modulation

(iii) Multiple pulse modulation with selective reduction of harmonics (iv) Sinusoidal pulse modulation.
