BORN IN TORONTO, CANADA OF A JEWISH PARENTS IN 1929. ALTHOUGH HE IS KNOWN AS AN AMERICAN ARCHITECT. AT THE AGE OF 17, HE WITH HIS PARENTS MOVED TO LOS ANGELES WHERE HE STUDIED ART.

RECEIVED HIS BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AND WENT ON TO STUDY CITY PLANNING AT HARVARD UNIVERSITYS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF DESIGN.
IN 1962 HE ESTABLISHED HIS OWN FIRM FRANK O. GEHRY AND ASSOCIATES INC.

GEHRY BEGAN HIS CAREER DURING THE POST WAR ERA WHEN FUNCTIONALISM WAS FASHIONABLE. HE HAS HELD ONTO THOSE VALUES, YET AT THE SAME TIME SUBVERTED THEM WITH HIS RADICAL TECHNIQUE AND APPROACH.

GEHRYS WORK OF THE SEVENTIES TO MIDEIGHTIES IS TERMED AS DECONSTRUCTIVE ARCHITECTURE HE IS SEEN AS TO BE THE FORERUNNER OF THIS MOVEMENT WITH HOUSES IN PARTICULAR LOOKING DELIBERATLY UNFINISHED AND ANTI HI-TECH. THROUGHOUT GEHRYS CAREER HIS ARCHITECTURE HAS EVOLVED INTO WHAT WE NOW CONSIDER TO BE TYPICALLY GEHRY. IN MUCH OF HIS EARLIER WORK WE CAN SEE ELEMENTS THAT IN FUTURE WORK BECOMES MORE PRONOUNCED AND RELEVANT. USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS HANDS ON MODEL MAKING HE COULD CREATE THE MOST AMAZING FORMS, KNOWING THAT THERE WAS LITTLE COMPROMISE OR SACRIFICE TO BE MADE FREEING HIM OF EVEN MORE CONSTRAINTS AND TRADITIONAL VALUES AND BRINGING HIS BUILDINGS TO LIFE.

GEHRYS DESIGN MADE BY HAND WAS DIGITIZED THEN RATIONALIZED BY CATIA TO ACHIEVE REPETITION WITHOUT SACRIFICING FORM. THROUGHOUT GEHRYS CAREER HIS ARCHITECTURE HAS EVOLVED HIS ART BACKGROUND BECOMING CLEARLY MORE RELEVANT AS HIS WORK PROGRESSED. HE USES MUCH MORE FLUID FORMATIONS, YET STILL THE SAME UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY TYPICAL WITHIN HIS EARLIER PROJECTS. GEHRY IS CONSIDERED A 'DECONSTRUCTIONIST' FAIR ENOUGH. THE GUGGENHEIM AT BILBAO, SPAIN, POSSIBLY HIS MASTERSTROKE SO FAR, IS CERTAINLY DECONSTRUCTIONIST, WITH THE EASILY VIEWABLE SHAPE OF A SEAGOING SHIP BROKEN UP INTO ZOOMY SILVER PLANES. IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE HEADED OUT ON A VOYAGE.

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, BILBAO, SPAIN

THE GUGGENHEIM AT BILBAO, SPAIN, POSSIBLY HIS MASTERSTROKE SO FAR, IS CERTAINLY DECONSTRUCTIONIST, WITH THE EASILY VIEWABLE SHAPE OF A SEAGOING SHIP BROKEN UP INTO ZOOMY SILVER PLANES.

THE MUSEUM HAS BEEN ANCHORED IN THE CITY SPACE OF BILBAO LIKE A VAST CIRCUS TENT SURROUNDED BY A CONGERIE OS CARANVAS, FOR THE VARIETY OF EVENTS ANTICIPATED TO TAKE PLACE THERE.

WHAT IS DECONSTRUCTION?

THE ARTIST GORDON MATTA-CLARK, WHO CUT APART BUILDINGS, AND THE ARCHITECT FRANK O. GEHRY, WHO DESTROYED AND PUT BACK TOGETHER THE "BOX" IN A NEW WAY, MADE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES AS THE FOUNDERS OF A NEW STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE KNOWN AS DECONSTRUCTIVIST ARCHITECTURE.
A DECONSTRUCTIVE PROCESS TAKES PLACE WHENEVER THE EXTERNAL FEATURES OF TRADITIONAL VALUES (AESTHETICS, FUNCTIONALITY) ARE DISMANTLED, EXAMINED, CRITICIZED OR, ABOVE ALL, "INSCRIBED" INTO ARCHITECTURE. DECONSTRUCTION WAS ACTUALLY THE DECONSTRUCTION OF TRADITION.

CHIAT/DAY MAIN STREET, VENICE, CALIFORNIA

LOCATED FOUR BLOCKS FROM THE PACIFIC, THIS THREE STOREY BUILDING FOR AN ADVERTISING AGENCY IS ON AN L-SHAPED SITE WHICH WAS SUBJECTED TO RIGOROUS LOCAL ZONING RESTRICTIONS. ITS MOST SURPRISING FEATURE IS THE ENORMOUS PAIR OF BINOCULARS WHICH SERVES AS THE ENTRANCE TO AN UNDERGROUND PARKING LOT FOR 300 CARS.

THE BINOCULORS ARE PART OF THE BUILDING, CONTAINING CONFERENCE OR RESEARCH SPACE.

SCHNABEL RESIDENCE (1986-89), BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA. THIS PARTICULARLY COMPLEX HOUSE OF ABOUT 550 SQUARE METERS, IS CLAD IN STUCCO, COPPER AND LEAD-COATED COPPER. A LAP POOL ON ONE SIDE, AND A SHALLOW LAKE ON ANOTHER, GIVE AN IMPRESSION THAT THE HOUSE IS INTIMATELY RELATED TO WATER. AS IS OFTEN THE CASE IN GEHRYS CALIFORNIA BUILDINGS, SOME OF THE FORMS SERVE TO SHIELD THE RESIDENTS FROM SUN.

FUN FACTS :
THE EXTERIOR STEEL SKIN SURFACE CONTAINS 160,000 SQ FT OF PANELS. OF 6,100 PANELS, ONLY 2,100 ARE THE SAME. IF THE 12,000 PIECES WERE LAID END TO END, THE STEEL PIECES WOULD STRETCH 49 MILES. A 750,000 LB CRANE WAS NEEDED TO ERECT THE STEEL SUPPORT STRUCTURE THE DISNEY CONCERT HALL HAS EIGHT SKYLIGHTS LOCATED IN THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE MAIN AUDITORIUM

THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL JUMPS OUT AS A SHIMMERING METALLIC BEHEMOTH OF JUTTING AND CURVING FANTASY. THE PANELS CURVE AND WRAP AROUND THE BUILDING AS THOUGH THEY ARE SHIP SAILS BILLOWING IN THE WIND. THE ENTRANCE HAS HUGE GLASS DOORS THAT FLIP UP TO MAKE THE LOBBY AN EXTENSION OF THE STREET. THE CONCERT HALL IS SITUATED ON HISTORIC BUNKER HILL AT THE INTERSECTION OF FIRST STREET AND GRAND AVENUE, ADJACENT TO THE EXISTING MUSIC CENTER OF LOS ANGELES.

THESE INCLUDE AN OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE MAIN ENTRANCE, A SYMPATHETIC AND INCLUSIVE ATTITUDE IN THE BUILDING'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE MUSIC CENTER'S EXISTING DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION, A PEDESTRIAN SCALE FRONTAGE ALONG GRAND AVENUE, A GENEROUS AND OPEN BACKSTAGE AREA, AND A LARGE GARDEN.
