The Table Officials Tools

There are two key tools which the table officials need: 1. The Official Game Score Card - to be managed by the Secretary 2. The Timing Console and Scoreboard to be managed by the Timekeeper

The Role of the Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for the accurate recording of key events that transpire during the water polo match. In order to do this effectively the secretary must observe the referee and the game closely at all times and communicate with the timekeeper the timing of key events.

Note all Key Events

The Secretary must note all of the key events that occur during the match. The Key Events include: Goals (G) Exclusions (E) Penalties (P) Suspensions (S) Penalty Goals (PG) Exclusion Goals (EG) The referee will signal all of these so it is important that Secretary understand these calls and be able to recognise them.

More advanced calls

These happen less often but it is good to be aware of these signals for Double Exclusions and Suspension infractions

Double Exclusion (E)

Players from both teams are excluded simultaneously

Misconduct (S)
Player is excluded for rest of the game with substitution

Brutality (S)
Player is excluded for rest of the game and team plays man down for 4 minutes

Note the Player and the Timing of Key Events

As well as recognising the key events, the Secretary must record the event completely by recording 1. Player by cap number 2. Player by cap colour (Blue or White ) 3. What the event was (Goal, Exclusion etc..) 4. Impact of the event of the score line All of these are recorded by quarter on the score card. Example: 9 - B - E (Number 9 Blue was excluded) 10 - W - EG (Number 10 White scored an extra man goal) 10 4 5

How to Record: Change of Goalies

Cap numbers are divided into four squares to record changes to caps. This example records that cap 3 and 1 swapped in the 2nd quarter and then cap 7 and cap 1 swapped in the 4th quarter.

How to Record: Multiple Goals Scored by One Player in a match

Goals are recorded by individual player Cap # using strokes as they occur during the match. In this example, Cap Number 4 scored three goals in the 1st quarter, one goal in the 3rd quarter and five goals in the 4th quarter to add up to an impressive nine goals for the whole game.

Tips
Introduce yourself to the other table official. Let them know if you are new and need some assistance. After each goal, the timekeeper and the secretary check the score. Timekeeper calls the referees signal to the secretary eg: Exclusion number 10 Blue. A person on the table should acknowledge when the referees signal of a goal/ cap number is seen. When the :20 second exclusion has expired, hold the flag up until the team bench acknowledges. White and Blue flags should be kept on either side of the console: Left = White Right = Blue Red Flag with secretary Yellow Flag in front of console The secretary should hold the re-entry flag up until the excluded player/ substitute re enters. If there is a malfunction with the clocks or any other issue, ask for help from the BWPI Pool Coordinator. Remain impartial (avoid over zealous cheering)... Have fun and enjoy the experience!
