The key operations Mental arithmetic It is common f or a test to include a section on mental arithmetic. Y ou are required to work the sums in y our head without a calculator or doing any working out on paper. These are easy marks f or the well-practised candidate. Sharpening y our skills is boring, painf ul ev en, but ev ery one can do it. It is simply a matter of practice. Be sure that y ou attend f or a test conf ident, f ast and accurate in these essential operations. Ev en if the test y ou f ace allows y ou to use a calculator, y ou should still attend being able to do these calculations in y our head. Y ou will sav e time if y ou do. Below are 100 practice questions f or y our command of multiplication. I hav e not prov ided practice f or addition and subtraction as y ou can dev ise y our own questions f or these key operations if necessary (y ou might change the sign of the f ollowing sums to make them, f or example, addition instead of multiplication). Ev en if the test that y ou f ace does not include questions of this sty le, they are essential skills and skills that y ou must command if y ou are to triumph in any numeracy test. Work out the f ollowing in y our head as quickly as possible. Do not stop practising until y ou are really quick and accurate. Answers are prov ided on page 244. Explanations are not prov ided f or the f irst 64 questions. 1 ? 5 = 15

Answer Percentages Af ter mental arithmetic and multiplication the next most essential skill demanded by psy chometric tests is percentages. Do these questions to rev ise y our ability in these essential operations. Keep practising until y ou are conf ident, f ast and accurate. Remember not to use a calculator but f eel f ree to use some scrap paper to do some working. If the answer is recurring, then work the sum to only one decimal place. Changing f ractions to decimals Tip: div ide 100 by the bottom v alue of the f raction and then multiply the result by the top v alue. Worked example: Find 1/2 as a percentage Explanation: 100 2 = 50 1 = 50
Answer
Answer Changing between decimals and percentages Tip: multiply a decimal by 100 to get the equiv alent percentage or div ide the percentage by 100 to get the equiv alent decimal. The f irst one is done f or y ou as a worked example. 120 Conv ert 0.5 into a percentage. Explanation: 0.5 100 = 50
Answer Expressing v alues as percentage Tip: make the f irst v alue a f raction of the second, reduce the f raction to its simplest term and then conv ert the f raction into a percentage. The f irst one is done f or y ou. 135 Find 30 as a percentage of 50. Explanation: 30/50 = 3/5, 100 5 = 20 3 = 60
Answer Percentages of quantities Tip: conv ert the percentage to a decimal and then multiply by the quantity but take care that y ou treat all the v alues equally and express y our answer in the appropriate unit. The f irst one is done f or y ou. 150 Find 12.5% of 80. Explanation: 12.5 100 = 0.125, 80 0.125 = 10.
Answer 161 Find 30% of 24 hours (express y our answer in hours and minutes).
Answer Percentage increase Tip: div ide the increase by the original amount and multiply the answer by 100. The f irst one is done f or y ou. 165 What is the percentage increase between 20 and 30? Explanation: increase = 10, 10 20 = 0.5 100 = 50
