Restoring Heritage: Reclaiming Value
The Centre for Heritage Management (CHM) at Ahmedabad University is one of its kind in India which specializes in heritage management, a niche and relevant area. It is established to promote conservation and management of heritage assets. The soul of India lies in its ancient culture and heritage. It has a rich legacy with an astonishingly diverse range of monuments and buildings, community spaces, arts & crafts, traditional dance & music, folklore, cuisine, textiles and lifestyles. These precious national assets are of great value and yet lie in equal neglect today. It is also the responsibility of every generation to ensure that the ingenuity and spirit of human skills, art and creativity are not lost to future generations. Centre for Heritage Management of Ahmedabad University has taken up the responsibility to become a pioneer in Mission Heritage through professional management to add value to the community and to the country.

Vision
Inclusion of heritage in all relevant policies and decisions of the country and make people aware and vigilant about heritage issues to take initiatives for protecting and preserving the cultural assets of the nation.

Mission
CHM aims to achieve its vision by offering quality academic and executive programmes to create motivated professionals; through research, documentation and publications; by organizing national and international seminars, conferences and symposia to expand and explore successful heritage experiences and practices from across the world; offer consultancy to heritage stakeholders and provide inputs for policy making.

Ahmedabad University
Ahmedabad University, established in July 2009 is promoted by the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES). The society, established in 1935 with inspiration from Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India and visionaries like Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai, Shri Amratlal Hargovandas and Shri G V Mavlankar, the first speaker of the Indian parliament, upholds values, transparency in governance and pursuit of quality education. The University today offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are at par with the international standards of educational excellence. The University strives to provide professional, contemporary and careeroriented education that is rooted in Indian ethos. Through various courses and programmes, the University continues to provide Global Education at local cost, context and ethos.

Ahmedabad Education Society (AES)


For over last 75 years, AES and its promoters have been directly and indirectly instrumental in pioneering several institutions of higher learning such as Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association (ATIRA), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), National Institute of Design (NID), Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) etc. It has also promoted the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University (CEPT) focusing on architecture, urban planning and related faculties. It was one of the first ones to start a commerce college and the first in India to start a college in pharmacy. AES has deep roots in the trade and industrial community of the city. Highly acclaimed industrialists and scientists represent the board of governors of AES. AES has five board members as representatives on the AU board. It has given practice orientation to our educational institutions, provided funding support for creation of infrastructure, imbibed tradition of values and accountability, and created contacts for various academic activities interfacing with the larger economy and society. AES has a large bank of more than 250 acres prime location in Ahmedabad for developing AU. There are very few urban universities around the world which have such land resources in the heart of the city for growth and development.

Academic Activities
The centre proposes a number of activities towards this end, like:
Designing and offering a variety of programmes in heritage management Conducting and disseminating research through documentation of best practices, garnering case studies as study material Serving training institutes, government bodies, relevant industrial sectors through customized programmes and advanced level seminars, workshops and conferences Provide consultancy services Initiate international collaboration worldwide with heritage management practitioners and institutes Designing and offering a Masters Programme in Heritage Management

CHM is dedicated to making heritage management education relevant and sustainable, and working towards institutionalizing this field as a professional discipline. CHM will endeavor to retain this heritage, and ignite interest of the community in making heritage management a peoples movement to ensure its preservation and continuity.

Programmes Offered
Masters Programme in Heritage Management
Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad Universitys motto of Mission Heritage aims to professionalize management of heritage assets to add value to the community and to the country. Its Masters programme in Heritage Management aims to empower its students to professionally manage heritage assets in a financially-viable and sustainable manner. The curriculum will be based on experiential learning rather than conventional teaching, which will differentiate its heritage managers from a typical management school aspirant. It will attempt to build knowledge, impart skills and nurture passion and attitude through: Functional courses, Thematic courses and Perspective-building

Heritage is not only the driving force of the culture of a community but also a powerful economic asset that generates employment and business opportunity in the region. With the increasing interest and understanding of the value of Heritage, CHM has identified the wide scope of professionally trained heritage managers who can benefit to make a successful career in the following sectors: Corporate houses Municipal/government departments Academic institutions National/international bodies related to heritage conservation Self-employment with entrepreneurship opportunities NGOs related to work in community heritage-related museums Publication houses Mass media networks Event and exhibition management

Research and publication


CHM aspires to build a knowledge base and act as a repository of best practices in the field of heritage management. For this purpose, it will involve itself in academic research and documenting process both nationally and internationally so as to build a learning resource. CHM also looks forward to doing collaborative research with national and international organizations. It will also identify major research and development projects in the area of heritage management.

Short term MDPs/Symposia/Conferences


CHM will be organizing a series of MDPs/Symposia and Conferences on varied aspects of heritage management. Conceptualized as the Asmita Samvad Dialogue on Heritage and Identity series, these will bring academia and practitioners together to create a pool of future students/ faculty members/experts who can steer the movement towards professionalizing heritage management. The symposia will act as mine houses for creating a knowledge pool, networking opportunities and research ideas in the field of heritage management.

Consultancy/Capacity building initiatives


CHM also aims to leverage its experience in the area of heritage management by involving itself in projects related to capacity-building, conservation of heritage assets, heritage management plans and other related matters. It regards such programmes as integral to its mission of dedicated heritage management. A few areas identified for such initiatives are policy formulation, management plans, interpretation as well as designing and developing heritage walks.

Customized Programmes
CHM also proposes to offer customized programmes for the benefit of heritage stakeholders. These programmes will focus on conceptual framework supported through sharing of best practices and case studies. They will be planned to enhance skills and knowledge of practitioners, government functionaries officials, academicians and entrepreneurs enabling them to give a boost to their professional career or enterprise. The range of programmes includes those on Site Management, Tourism Management, Finance, Communications, Community Involvement, Urban Conservation etc.

Faculty
CHM has a pool of renowned experts and experienced scholars, practitioners and stakeholders who will share their professional knowledge and teaching experience to inspire and educate its students.

Infrastructure/resources
The Centre for Heritage Management operates from the campus of Ahmedabad University in the heart of Ahmedabad. The University has built a world-class infrastructure for itself by promising global education at a local cost. CHM shares the AUs infrastructure and resources.

National/International collaboration
The Centres aim is to make heritage management a recognized academic discipline, and towards that end, it aims to collaborate with reputable institutes, organizations and NGOs internationally and nationally. CHM has already entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with University of Valladolid, Spain and University of Ferrara, Italy to promote cooperation towards joint activities related to heritage management. The Centre is an Associate Member of The EuroIndia Centre. The Centre is also in touch with institutions in South East Asia for collaborative efforts as well as reputed museums and institutes in India.
