Highest Ranked Asian Woman Ever Li Na is worlds No.3

In the finals, Li-Na playing sensational Tennis surprised everyone by winning the first set against Serena Williams. This shook Serena, who looked little tired, slow and showed signs of having a bad day. But Serena came back, showing that her brand of Tennis is the best in 2013 and it has the capacity to win even on a bad day. She won the final set at 6/0. It gave Serena the WTA Championship Title and the Billie Jean King Trophy. This year Serena Williams is the undisputed Queen of Tennis. Her achievement includes two grand Slam titles and a win/loss record of 78/4. All these enhanced her career earnings by 12 million dollars. In the prematchinterview she emphasized that she would improve her game further next year. If that happens she could be a Grand Slam prospect for 2014. World No.3 Li-Na of China Li-Na Of China

Womens Tennis Association [WTA] Championships in Istanbul this year had glamour, history and the eight best of 2013 provided a great Tennis spectacle. Jelena Jankovic former number one bounced back from her bout of injuries and bad form to be noticed. Jankovic reached the semi-finals and it was Li-Na who knocked her out in a thriller.

After Istanbul, another land mark event happened; for the first time an Asian woman is worlds number 3. Li-Na of China! She belongs to the first generation athletes from China to break into the top 10 of professional Tennis. At 31 she has achieved much of her goals. In her career she has won 19 singles and 16 doubles ITF womens titles, 7 singles and 2 doubles WTA titles. Her career prize money is well over 13 million dollars. Li-Nas is not a story of plain sailing. She is the only child of father Li Sheng-Peng a professional Badminton player and Yan-Ping of Wuhan, China. Li-Na played Badminton till 9 and then switched to Tennis. [She lost her father when she was 14]. Tennis as the second sport is a trend one sees in many successful sportspersons. Another interesting aspect in her Tennis development is the emphasis in Doubles. It has developed many of Li-Nas effective game-making aspects in singles. Her quick assessment of situation and sighting of the ball gave instantaneous reaction. Other is her all court positioning and stroke making ability. These are from doubles.

November 2013 | Asiantennis.com

Womens Tennis History Li-Nas husband Jiang Shan coached her most of the career. He is always there by the court side when Li-Na plays. There were many outspoken comments from Li-Na in her post match interviews about their partnership but she always said it laughing. Then, Justin Hennins Belgian/Spanish coaching outfit moved into China. Li-Na has been working with them this year. It has changed her approach and to a good extent her game. I believe she has three more good years. There is hope for an Asian number one. China Taipei Doubles The Chinese did not stop with Li-Nas Singles appearance in the finals. Hsieh SuWei and Peng Shuai of China and Taipei took the doubles title beating the Russian pair Elena Vesina and Ekaterina Makarova in the finals. Today China is another Tennis-Power to be reckoned with. At present doubles is providing two vital purposes in Open-Tennis. First, it is fast becoming the post singles career platform for players. Second, it is an inlet for the young to enter Open-Tennis arena. Sara Errani of Italy has number one in doubles and seven in Singles in the world rankings. That is truly amazing. There will be much growth of doubles in the coming years. The WTA Championships of Istanbul went further with the event and reminded the historic road of Womens Tennis. The person who did it all was Billie Jean King. In many ways WTA is her brain child. The event hosted many past legends and it was a pleasant refreshment of yester years Tennis memories.

Mens ATP Federers Dilemma In the finals of the ATP mens tournament, Juan Martin Del Porto beat Roger Federer in his home town Basel Switzerland last week. Even as the loser Roger Federer received the longest applause I have seen in sports. It lasted nearly for 3 minutes. Federers appearance in the final does not place

November 2013 | Asiantennis.com

him on safe grounds to be eligible for the year ending ATP event in London. He will have to perform well in the last big ATP event before London. It is the Paris-Open this week. In the match against Del Porto in Basel, Federer could not break though in crucial situations to turn the match to his favour. Federer has shown this trend throughout 2013.

Writing on the WTA Tour website, Date-Krumm says, "One more thing I want to talk about is Li Na

reaching No.3 in the world last week, and breaking my record for highest-ranked Asian player in tennis history. For Asian players it's really good. When I was young there weren't so many Asian players in the world, and people never thought we could be No.1 or get a Grand Slam title - she already has a Grand Slam title, and many many years she's been in the Top 10 and Top 5. And now she's No.3. It's a big success and I really want to congratulate her! For a lot people in Asia it's a big dream come true, and now they can have big dreams too."

Tennis - 42 year old Japanese wonder woman Kimiko Date-Krumm has congratulated China's Li Na for breaking her record of becoming the highest ranked Asian tennis player in the world. Date-Krumm peaked at no. 4 in the rankings in the mid1990s and that record stood until a few weeks ago when Li Na moved to no. 3 in the world.

'You cannot be serious!' McEnroe dons '80s wig as he teams up with Nishikori for charity
Seven-time grand slam singles champion John McEnroe gave Japan's Kei Nishikori a run for his money on Sunday in a charity match for the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Playing in Japan for the first time since 1997, the 54-year-old McEnroe took on Nishikori, the 23year-old Japanese star who rose to No. 11 in the world rankings this year. Nishikori beat McEnroe 1-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in a tiebreak but the score hardly mattered as Sunday's match was about raising money for the Tohoku Tennis Association to help rebuild and rejuvenate tennis in the region devastated by the March, 11, 2011 disaster.

on here?' he shouted to a sold-out crowd of 10,000 when a crying baby interrupted a serve. With the score tied 6-6 in the tiebreak, McEnroe gave an assessment of his opponent's condition 'looks like he's runnin' out of gas' - and made a few of his trademark rants over close calls and the occasional thrown racket.

Remembering: Kei Nishikori and McEnroe were raising money for the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami

McEnroe said he was more than happy to visit Japan and help out the people on the country's northeastern coast. 'It's good to try to help people through a difficult time,' McEnroe said. 'Unfortunately, disasters like this seem to be happening more and more these days.' Nishikori, who has helped contribute to a rejuvenation of tennis in Japan in recent years, said he was impressed with the play of the winner of seven grand slam titles. 'He played a lot better than I expected,' Nishikori said. 'I was surprised. His shots were very good. I really enjoyed playing against him and it was a great experience.'

'Cannot be serious!' John McEnroe put on a wig for the charity match and made his usual complaints

'Considering I just got in a few days ago, my body was moving pretty well,' McEnroe said. 'I was able to make some good shots but he took some mercy on me.' In addition to his competitive spirit, McEnroe showed flashes of his famous wit. 'Is this a tennis match or a daycare center, what the heck is going

Wheelchair Tennis

Griffioen produced some solid tennis to serve out the second set to love. Griffioen earned the first service hold of the deciding set to lead 3-1 and broke Kamiji to make it 4-1. However, the Dutchwomans hopes of retaining the title were interrupted by two errorstrewn games that allowed Kamiji to draw level at 4-4 before she moved ahead for the first time in the final set courtesy of a crisp cross court forehand winner. With Griffioen serving to stay in the match, a double fault brought up Kamijis first match point and although Griffioen saved two match points in the final game, two more successive double faults brought a fascinating final to an end, with Kamiji claiming her second and most important career victory over Griffioen in the seven matches between the two players.

Shingo Kunieda, Yui Kamiji and David Wagner won the mens, womens and quad singles titles at the 2013 NEC Wheelchair tennis Masters on Monday, with Kamiji making history at the Margeurite Tennis Pavilion in Mission Viejo, California by becoming the first non-Dutch player to win the womens singles title in the 20 year history of the NEC Masters. Kamiji started the Japanese double later completed by Kunieda after securing a 76(3) 36 64 victory over defending champion Jiske Griffioen, who was bidding to continue the Dutch dominance. However, world No. 3 Griffioen handed Kamiji the initiative after a doubles fault on break point in the fourth game to give her opponent a 3-1 lead. Griffioen battled back to take the lead for the first time at 5-4, but the first set ultimately came down to a tiebreak, which Kamiji dominated from the outset. Griffioen was hampered by problems with her serve at key times and a double fault gave Kamiji the opening game of the second set. However, Griffioen made amends to open a 3-1 lead. Although another double fault saw Kamiji get back to within a game of her opponent at 4-3, November 2013 | Asiantennis.com

its been a great week at the NEC Masters here in Mission Viejo. Id like to thank Jiske Griffioen and her team for making such a great final. She was a really tough opponent, said Kamiji. I also want to thank the people who were involved in this great tournament and made great atmosphere. Finally, Id like to thank my team, especially my coach for helping me during the year. Its been a great season. I won my first Super Series and Masters titles and reached my highest 9

Kunieda retains mens singles title

ranking position. I look forward to playing the next season and hopefully winning a Grand Slam title. Kunieda became just the second player to win back-to-back NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters mens singles titles after a 60 76(9) victory over Belgian world No. 6 Joachim Gerard. Gerard had demonstrated his immense talent in the round-robin phase of the competition, in which he beat world No. 2 Stephane Houdet of France and world No. 3 Maikel Scheffers of Netherlands. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Kunieda had lost his last round-robin pool match to French world No. 8 Nicolas Peifer. However, there was little to suggest that Kunieda was vulnerable as he powered through the first set of the final without dropping a game.

Wagner wins sixth NEC Masters quad singles title

This season Lucas Sithole has become the first African player to win a Super Series title and the first African to win a Grand Slam wheelchair tennis title. The 27-year-old triple amputee began his bid to become the first African to win an NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters title in fine form as the US Open champion raced through the opening set against world No. 1 Wagner without dropping a single game, despite a closely fought deuce game to end the set. After winning their quad singles round-robin match earlier in the week in straight sets, Wagner came out for the second set much more positively and gained an early break, but he put in a double fault to end a marathon fourth game and allow Sithole to level the set at 2-2. Nevertheless, cheered on by his legion of enthusiastic supporters Wagner regained the momentum and claimed the last four games of the set to force a decider. The 39-year-old defending champion then put together a similar sequence to wrap up his sixth NEC Masters quad singles 06 62 62.

Gerard battled back from 4-3 down in the second set and saved three break points before delivering a booming forehand winner to claim a 5-4 lead. The Belgian saved two more break points and delivered an ace to maintain his slender advantage at 6-5 before Kunieda forced the tiebreak and went on to earn two match points at 6-4 in the tiebreak. But, once more Gerard was equal to the task and went on to have set points at 7-6 and 8-7. However, Gerards effort finally ended as he sent a return long over Kuniedas baseline, giving the top seed another match point, which Kunieda duly converted to claim his second successive NEC Masters title.

Triple the excitement: Beach Tennis at Zayed Sports City

says the sport is getting more and more popular, especially in countries like the UAE where games are part and parcel of a day at the beach. We are working to promote [the game] in the UAE, he says. We can already see people improving their game and some serious teams coming to the fore. We already have a ranking system for the players set up and we update it regularly. The PSS Tour will continue over the next few months at Zayed Sports City with tournaments until June. Such is our involvement in the sport now that one of our main goals is to organize an international event (ITF Tour) here in Zayed Sports City.

If alternate or niche sports is your thing, then why not try your hand or your forehand at beach tennis at Zayed Sports City (ZSC) Youre wondering how you can play tennis on a beach, arent you? Well, its not so difficult. You have probably seen it on one of the many beaches around the UAE. Its played in three categories; mens doubles, womens doubles and mix doubles, and it is currently one of the fastest growing sports in the world. ZSC and Professional Sports Services (PSS) are teaming up to organize a number of tournaments over the next few months, starting with the first on Friday, November 22. It will begin at 09:00 next to the tennis complex where ZSC have built four competition beach tennis courts. The tournament is open to all levels of players above the age of 10 in the three doubles teams categories. Competition will start with non-seeded teams playing a round-robin qualification and after the main draw there will be a knock-out and consolation knockout draw. The cost of entry is Dh75. And this is not the first time that ZSC and PSS have combined for such a competition. PSS tennis coach and tournament organizer Tiago Neves November 2013 | Asiantennis.com

We have been getting very good feedback from all participants, and are seeing increased numbers of players at our events. At the last tournament we had 30 mens doubles teams which is 60 players and we had 15 mixed doubles teams. We are trying to promote the womens doubles a bit more but its difficult to get the numbers. Thats an incredible number of participants for a sport which you might say is not competitive, but it just goes to show how popular an activity can get when an element of competition is added. We supply the racquets for all players and no special gear is required. There will be lots of music to keep the players and spectators entertained, says Neves. The rules are pretty simple the ball cannot bounce. The court dimensions are 16x8 meters and the net is 1.7 meters high. The hitting instrument is a beach tennis paddle. Only one touch is allowed and the scoring system is the same as in tennis. So why not grab a partner and head down to Zayed Sports City on Friday and see if you have the skills for this exciting game.

The Rise of Uzbek Tennis in the last five years? It has been a story where we started from scratch after our senior players retired and there was a big vacuum, but the Success of Denis Istomin who reached the top 50 in the world in the Profesional circuit , the rise of Akgul Amanmuradova also to top 50 in the WTA rankings , the 3 silver medals at Guangzhou Asian Games are all result of hard work of the players , some good planning and the Support of the Uzbek Tennis Federation. We are proud of our youngsters are doing well whether in the Davis Cup or Fed Cup Competitions , this year we were bit unlucky against Kazakhstan in the play off in Mens and also in the Fed Cup , but overall it has been some

good results from both the boys and the girls About what it has done for Tennis now? Our efforts and broad basing has helped us to throw up an entire new breed of players , we have some young juniors Sanjar Faiyzev , Timur Ismail , Jurabek Karimov, Shonigmatjon Shofayziyev , Nigina Abduraimova, Sabina Sharipova , Arina Folts , Guzal Yusupova who have great future ahead.

Do you have any new Strategy for new season? With the new Davis Cup and Fed Season surely we will be grooming new faces in our teams, they have opportunity to play with experienced player, they should absorb and learn from seniors. Also playing on the team with players like Istomin and Dustov will not only help them increase their confidence but also raise their level of game. Our aim is to prepare our new generation for future battles. On Competitions in the country? We work with our players and also give them enough competitive exposure in the country as well, even now we have worked with them before with challengers. However they lack experience, they played well but lost. But I think that tournaments like these challengers will change the way the young [players think and play , Im also appreciative of the UTF for organizing so many events and providing golden opportunities to our players. Do you think that Uzbek tennis has more depth in Mens tennis compared to the womens tennis? I feel there is depth in the womens too, we have young girls who are poised for a leap, we have been able to increase the base of tennis players. The growing numbers of students coming for selection to the Republic school of Tennis has shown us the there is tremendous pool of good players from regions, and a lot of interest in tennis. So according you how, in how many years we can have a new Uzbek top 50 star? I think that in womens it will take about 2 years for our player to reach the top 50 mark , while in the Men s it will take a little longer looking at the high competition.

Nigina Abduraimova

Though most of these players are from Tashkent, there is lot of development and lot of exposure in all the regions all round. We have many players from all the regions come to the Olympic school of tennis in Tashkent from all the regions, In the next few years Im sure that champions will come from our regions.

SHOULDER INJURIES IN TENNIS

Interestingly, the most common injury site in the shoulder is not rotator cuff muscles themselves but rather the tendons that attach these muscles to the upper arm. There is not a lot of space inside the shoulder. When muscles fatigue or improper technique is used, it is very easy for one of the rotator cuff tendons that pass through this space to get pinched. When this happens over and over again, it can lead to tendinitis. Many of the shoulder injuries seen in tennis can be prevented with a proper stretching program. STRETCHES TO PREVENT SHOULDER INJURIES The two most important shoulder stretches for tennis players are the Cross- arm Stretch and the Sleeper Stretch. Research show that using these stretches as part of a regular program will improve the range of motion of internal rotation. PREVENTIVE SHOULDER STRETCHES As with any stretch, perform them after tennis play and complete two or three repetitions of each stretch, holding each for 20 to 30 seconds. This will improve or maintain flexibility in the shoulder. Cross Arm Stretch Focus: Improve the flexibility of the muscles in the back of the shoulder and back of the shoulder joint capsule. Procedure 1. Stand next to a doorway or fence, if possible. Raise your racket arm to shoulder level. Brace the side of your shoulder and shoulder blade against the wall or fence to keep the shoulder blade from sliding forward when you begin the stretch.

2. Using the other hand, grab the outside of the elbow of your racket hand and pull your arm across your chest (figure). You should feel the stretch in back your shoulder. Note: If you feel a pinching sensation in the front of your shoulder, discontinue this stretch and use Sleeper Stretch to accomplish a similar for this portion of the shoulder. Sleeper Stretch Focus: Improve the flexibility of the muscles in the back of the shoulder and back of the shoulder joint capsule. Procedure 1. Lie on your dominant shoulder in a position you might adopt when sleeping on your side (hence the name.) 2. Place your dominant arm directly in front of you, with the elbow bent 90 degrees. 3. Using your other arm, push your hand down toward your feet, internally rotating your shoulder (figure) 4. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds.
