TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
1' Be itknown that I, FQANKLIN BRUA, of Gordonville, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsyl
vania, have invented a new and useful improvement in the combination and arrangement of Raking Attachment
to Reaping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation. of the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters
_ of reference marked thereonLmaking a part of this speci?cation, in which
Figure l is a perspective view of the platform Q, supporting column A, with the horizontal rake-bearing
wheel and parts in place, I
Figure 2 is atop and a side view of thecogged wheel 0, with its centrally raised and slotted arms.
Figures 3, view of each separate part'iu detail and detached. .\ I The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of a horizontal wheel, cogged
beneath and provided with stops or lugs on its upper surface, and slotted radiating arms carrying the rakes with it in its revolutions, and causing the several rakes to rise and 'fall by the intervention of a cam, ai?xed to the
vertical shaft, around whichthe rake-wheel revolves as its centre.
and operation. v

_
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe its construction
On an upright post, A, is-the double head, B, or socket bracket, for the reception of avertical shaft, I, ?gs. 3. To this shaft, I, the slightly-dished cam G, with its outer bevel edge, is ?rmly a?ixed; next below the cam G there is a curved guard-plate, G, with an ear perforated for the passage of said shaft I. There: is also a bracket, D, with an annular end, for embracing said shaft I, beneath the curved guard C; this elbowed bracket,
'1), .supports 'a'bevelpinio'n, F; the'se'severai parts-are secnredby'afstout nut, E,- "iii?xed to' the screW'end," e, of
,
the vertical-shaft, I. The cogged rake-Wheel O, ?g. 2, is slipped down over the shaft I, from above, having its bearing in the centre of the four centrally-elevated and slotted radiating arms M; the rakes and gatherer, T, are provided (on their shafts) with a socket, K, and curved heel, L, terminated by an end providedwith a friction
.pulley, Z, or otherwise; this curved heel L enters the slot at of the radiating arms M, and is held by a pivot
between said slots 'm, while the shafts of the rakesare each held by their connection with the socket trough K and heel L. Two of the shafts, T, are shown provided with rakes, alternating with the other two, bearing -.simply reel-like gatherers or arms, ?g. 1. The platform and reaping machine being no part of my invention,
im'ay be of any of the kinds in use, adapted to the application of said raking attachment. The operation will
'be readily understood. To give a revolving motion to the pinion F from the machine, when in motion, by means ,of a chain or othen gearing, will carry the shafts T of therakes, connected by a pivot in the. slots of the radi
"a'ting'arms, M, of the horizontal coglgedl-wheel 0, into which the pinionF meshes. The curved heel Ll coming
in contact with the edge of the cam G, presses the lower end out gradually, which causes the shaft to rise aupwards at the point, after having swept over the platform, and the rake or blind thus raised continues in this
elevated position, so as to clear the driver, seated on the machine, and as the edge of the cam G is so graduated as to bring the rake gradually down with its teeth in close proximity to the platform, in a line with the cutting-I
bar, in whichposition it 'is held by the terminus, Z, of - the shaft, coming- between the curved guard-plate C and back portion of the cam,'_so that the rake cannot be pressed upwards from the platform until after said heel or terminus, I, has cleared the guard, at the point its o?ice is performed, to keep the heel ofvthe shaft ?rm, so as not to yield to pressure laterally, or backwards, while-raking oil heavy grain, The upper side of the wheel 0 is provided with a stud, P,: to each radiating arm, M, against which stud or lug, I), the heel L of the shaft is made to bear ; thus while the rakes falland rise within the slotted arms with ease, the, guard-plate and lugs
support them in performing their of?ce as they successively follow each other over the platform, acting with
_ great precision. The screw-nuts H and E will hold and con?ne the several parts on the shaft.
I What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- _
The peculiar construction of the horizontal wheel 0, with itsstops or lugs P, centrally-elevated radiating
arms M, with their slots m, in combination with the elbowed heel K L, of the rake-shaft 'T, the whole being
arranged and operated in the manner and. for the purpose herein set forth.
I also claim the arrangement of the double head B, centre-pin or shaft I, bracket D, pinion F, and slotted
cog~whecl 0, when constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth. FRANKLIN BRUA. Witnesses:
