Introduction Extension of the main memory

Extensions and conversions

The eight slots for the main memory are suitable for PC2-3200 DDR DIMM memory modules. The organization in four memory banks, 0 to 3, permits rapid memory access with two-way interleaving. Memory modules must always be incorporated in pairs. A memory bank must always be equipped fully with the same type of memory modules. ROMB (RAID on motherboard) The on-board SCSI controller can be upgraded to a RAID5 (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50) controller with a "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" upgrade kit. In this case the on-board INTEL I/O processor is activated by incorporating a license key and a cache module. Additional accessible drives Two free 5.25-inch bays are available for accessible drives. The third 5.25-inch bay is already occupied by a 3.5-inch x 0.5-inch floppy disk drive and a 5.25-inch x 0.5-inch DVD-ROM drive. Optionally, a LocalView module can be integrated above the floppy disk drive. LocalView module (alphanumeric system display) The LocalView module provides you with the option of displaying system information and hardware system faults alphanumerically. This is an intelligent module with a micro controller and its own memory, which functions independently of the server system. The LocalView module consists of an LCD display panel and a toggle switch, both accommodated in a suitable mount. The mechanical mechanism used allows the LCD display panel to be pulled out and flapped out. Further information on operating the display modes are provided in the documentation on the LocalView module. Hard disks extension box The two free 5.25-inch bays for accessible drives can be used to integrate a hard disks extension box. The hard disks extension box enables up to three additional HDD modules to be integrated. Each HDD module can accommodate a SCSI hard disk drive with an SCA (Single Connector Attachment) interface and a height of at most 1 inch.

Extensions and conversions

Introduction

The connection to the SCSI backplane is made without cables via the SCA interface. This makes it simple to plug in or pull out the HDD modules. If the server has a RAID controller and the corresponding RAID configuration, defective HDD modules can also be replaced while the system is operating. Additional controllers in non-hot-plug PCI slots The system board offers five PCI slots. Slots 1-3 are non-hot-plug PCI slots. The hardware of the system board optimizes the speed of the PCI bus (IOOP) for PCI slots 1-3, depending on how the slots are equipped. If only slot 3 is occupied, the PCI bus speed is 133 MHz. For all other equipment variants the PCI bus speed is 100 MHz. PCI slots 4 and 5 are hot-plug PCI slots which can be equipped with controllers that have hot-plug capability (the hot-plug PCI slots are described in the Operating Manual). RemoteView RemoteView provides you with a comprehensive test and diagnostics package. The test and diagnostics software is stored on a chipDISK. The chipDISK is a memory component with an IDE interface. In the event of a fault the test and diagnostics software is automatically loaded from the chipDISK and executed. RemoteView Service Board S2 LP The RemoteView Service Board S2 LP (RSB S2 LP) is a PCI board with a completely independent system, i.e. it has its own operating system with Web server and SNMP agents and can optionally be equipped with an external power supply. The RSB S2 LP is inserted into a standard-PCI slot and connected to the system board via a power and a data cable. The RSB S2 LP permits remote diagnosis for system analysis, remote system configuration and remote restart even in the event of operating system failure or hardware faults. It has its own LAN connection and its own COM port. All the functions of the RSB S2 LP are thus available either via a LAN or modem. External SCSI interface If the internal hard disks are connected via a PCI RAID controller, one channel of the on-board controller can also be made available for connecting peripheral cabinets via an external SCSI interface.

Introduction Parallel interface for printers

Notational conventions

As an option, a parallel interface can be provided for printers. Conversion of SCSI 1-channel version to SCSI 2-channel version The internal SCSI configuration can be converted from a 1-channel version to a 2-channel version. The hard disk access times are shortened. Use of the 2-channel version together with a RAID controller dramatically increases the availability of the system. Conversion of the floorstand model to a rack model The floorstand model can optionally be converted so that the server can be integrated into the common rack systems.

Safety notes Installation and operation

V CAUTION!

If the rack model is integrated in an installation that receives power from an industrial (public) power supply network with the IEC309 connector, the (public) power supply protection must comply with the requirements for the non-industrial (public) power supply networks for the type A connector. The server automatically sets itself to a voltage in the range of 100 V to 240 V. Make sure that your local voltage is within this range. This device has a specially approved power cable and must only be connected to a grounded insulated socket. Ensure that the power socket on the device or the grounded wall outlet is freely accessible. The ON/OFF button does not disconnect the device from the mains voltage. To disconnect the line voltage completely, remove all power plugs from the grounded insulated sockets. Always connect the device and the attached peripherals to the same power circuit. Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example, the central processing unit is still running but the peripheral device (e.g. storage subsystem) has failed during a power outage. Data cables to peripheral devices must be adequately shielded. To the LAN wiring the requirements apply in accordance with the standards EN 50173 and EN 50174-1/2. As minimum requirement the use of a protected LAN line of category 5 for 10/100 MBps Ethernet, and/or of category 5e for Gigabit Ethernet is considered. The requirements of the specification ISO/IEC 11801 are to be considered. Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential hazard (make sure no-one can trip over them) and that they cannot be damaged. When connecting up a device, refer to the relevant notes in this manual. Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (lightning hazard).

Processors
Observe the safety instructions in the chapter Safety notes on page 13ff.

V CAUTION! V CAUTION!
Processors are modules which can react extremely sensitively to electrostatic discharges and which must therefore always be handled with care. After a processor has been removed from its protective sleeve or from its socket, place it with its smooth side down on a non-conducting, antistatic surface. Never push a processor over a surface.

6.1

Installing a second processor

The system board can be upgraded with a second processor. The upgrade kit consists of a processor, a heat sink, and a processor fan.

V CAUTION!
Only processors of the same type may be used on the system board. The second processor must have at least the same clock frequency as the first processor. The server always configures itself to the lower clock frequency of the two processors. For dual operation, use a suitable multiprocessor operating system. V CAUTION! I PCI slots 4 and 5 are hot-plug PCI slots which can be equipped with
RAID controllers with hot-plug capability. The hot-plug PCI slots are described in the Operating Manual. The system board offers five PCI slots. Slots 1-3 are non-hot-plug PCI slots. The system board hardware optimizes the speed of the PCI bus (IOOP) of PCI slots 1-3 depending on how the slots are equipped. If only slot 3 is equipped, the PCI bus speed is 133 MHz. In all other equipment variants the PCI bus speed is 100 MHz. Controllers with low-profile brackets can also be mounted in PCI slots 1-3. In this case the low-profile brackets are extended using the adapter (K668-C63) from the system accessory pack.

1-channel SCSI- / RAID-cabling

Attention !! Only standard configurations can be cabled ex works like described in following examples. Configurations which differ from these standards or are more complex ( for instance with more than one RAID controller ) possibly have to be recabled afterwards or can be ordered via Customizing in exactly the same configuration like the customer requests. In this case additionally the exact slot position and the exact hard disk postion can be defined
Configuration of the basic unit with on-board SCSI controller:
# to channel A of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller. With this controller hot-replace of HD`s is possible with the embedded "IME" function ( Integrated Mirroring Enhanced = RAID 1). Channel B of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller is available for accessible SCSI drives. An optional HD extension box for three additional hard disks can be connected to this channel. Config. 1a + 1b

Configuration of the basic unit with the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB":

Config. 1a + 1b

The on-board SCSI-controller is used together with the on-board RAID5 I/O-processor for SCSI-HDs if the on-board RAID5 I/O-processor is enabled with the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" Upgrade Kit Pls see section VIII Disk Array for order information. # to channel A of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller. With the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" hot-replace of HD`s is possible on both channels (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 ). Channel B of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller is available for accessible SCSI drives. An optional HD extension box for three additional hard disks can be connected to this channel.

Configuration of the basic unit with 1-, 2- or 4-channel Disk Array controller (DAC) :
Pls see section VIII Disk Array for order information. # channel B of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller is available for internal accessible SCSI backup drives. The channel A of the on-board Ultra 320 SCSI controller can be connected to external SCSI components if the "SCSI interface external for on-board Ctrl." option (S26361-F2814-E7) is configured. (See description on-board SCSI controller, section VII).

Config. 2a - 4a Config. 2b - 4b

Cabling priorities:
In configurations with on-board SCSI or the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" option the system is cabled according to following priorities. (Prio 1 - 4 ): 1.) For a configuration with on-board SCSI or the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" option channel A of the on-board SCSI-controller is connected to the 6 internal HDs. ( The on-board RAID5 I/O-processor, if enabled, uses the SCSI-channels of the on-board controller ) If an optional HD extension box for 3 additional hard disks or a SCSI backup drive is configured they are connected to channel B of the on-board SCSI-controller ( e.g. RAID5 I/O-processor, if enabled with the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" option).

"MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" + Backup Drives

Additional controller for a performant backup solution
Attention ! If you use the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" upgrade option in a 1-channel configuration without an additional HDD-Box, channel A is always connected to the SCSI backplane for the 6 HD`s ex works and channel B is connected to the backup-drives. ( Configuration 1a ) In this configuration it is possible, that with high load on the HD channel and concurrent backup operation no optimal backup performance can be obtained ( Start-Stop-operation ), because the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB" internally always gives priority to the HD-access. There are three possibilities to solve this problem. Solution 1: Start the backup only if reduced HD load can be expected. ( Limited user-activities for instance over night ). Solution 2: Configuration of an additional SCSI controller for backup is possible, but the cable has to be disconnected from Channel B and connected to the SCSI controller by the customer This Solution 2.) however is not recommended because the more performant and regarding cost equivalent Solution 3.) can be ordered as standard configuration ex works. SCSI-Controller for a performant backup solution - Cabling of backup drives with additional SCSI-Controller => Internal cable is used for SCSI-controller and backup
Solution 2.) SCSI-Controller + Backup Ordered: - MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB - Backup (optional) - SCSI Controller for backup

Cabling priorities:
In configurations with a Disk Array controller the system is cabled according to following priorities. (Prio 1 - 4): Config. 5a + 5b 1.) For a configuration with the "MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB", which uses the on-board SCSI controller the two SCSI channels of the on-board controller are connected to one SCSI channel with 3 HDs each. If an optional HD extension box for 3 additional hard disks or a SCSI backup drive is configured an additional SCSI- or RAID-controller is required.
Configuration 5a T Ordered: - On-board upgrade for MegaRaid PCI Express ROMB - Conversion kit for 2x 3 HD 2-channel - Backup (optional) - SCSI Controller
Configuration 5b - Cabling of SCSI- / RAID and HDD-Box with internal cable
