Reading to Children
A childs reading ability and love of reading is one of the single biggest indicators of how well they will do at school and in later life. There really is no greater gift you can give your child.
When reading to your child try the following:
Read the title with them and point to it Hold the book so they can see clearly Get them to help when turning the pages Engage them by reading in a clear and animated voice If there is a complicated or new word check your child understands itif not give an explanation and model its use in a sentence. Try use different voices and accents for the different characters this is fun for them but will also help them to understand which character is speaking. Point to the illustrations as you read, ask them questions like Why is he smiling? or What do you think will happen next?

For the Story Bag: Keep the images in a bag along with the book and any other props you have or can make. When you read the story empty out the story bag and get your children to act out the story and get involved as you read it to them. Other things you could include in the story bag are underpants, toy aliens, a picture of planet Earth, a picture of a meteor, a toy fire engine and so on.
