5. Main Body of the Report Vision To enable the whole World to provide for themselves while aspiring to improve their lives and contribute to their communities.
Mission Our mission is two-fold: To enhance and develop skills. To support projects that encourages entrepreneurship, self-reliance and provides employment opportunities.
5.1 Introduction: It is the requirement of the university to do internship in a well-known organization to learn some about practical working in organizations and it is also important to implement the theoretical knowledge which is learnt in the classroom. The requirement of the internship is to work for at least six weeks in any organization where you can implement your theoretical work. If a student has desire to learn then he can get a lot of good things out of this internship period. For this activity I selected Pick n Pay Supermarket Pace Gujrat. This internship has really helps me a lot to reshape my skills and abilities as a management student. 5.2 Overview of The organization 5.2.1 Brief History Pick n Pays extraction can be traced back to principles handed down to Raymond Ackerman when he was a commerce student at the University of Cape Town. His lecturer, Professor WH Hutt, believed implicitly in the principle of consumer power, and his words, treat the customer like a queen and she will make you a king, made a lasting impression on the young student. The Companys task is consumerism, which in simple terms, means to understand and satisfy customers needs by selling quality products at competitive prices, and providing well-mannered service in stores that are well located and pleasing to shop in. In addition, a policy of refunding goods without question has enabled Pick n Pay to establish long-standing customer relationships, and has finally lead to an extremely
reliable customer base. Pick n Pays history is proof that the philosophy of consumer power is not simply a platitude. The Pick n Pay Group is one of Africas largest and most consistently successful retailers of food, general merchandise and clothing. Today, the Pick n Pay Group has a total of 750 stores, made up of Hypermarkets, Supermarkets and Family Stores (which are authorized stores). Pick n Pay employs over 32 000. In 1967, Pick n Pay was founded as a family controlled business with four small stores in the Western Cape. Focused on food, clothing and general merchandise, the Pick n Pay Group is managed through two divisions 1: Pick n Pay Retail Division and the 2: Group Enterprises Division. Each division has its own management board. In USA Pick n Pay started its business in 1885. In a very short time the company has expand its business in different USA states like New Jersey, Chicago, New York etc. After the success in USA the company decided to move their business into many other countries. In 1996 the company opened its 1 st branch in Lahore city, Pakistan. The company started its 1 st branch with the name Pick n Pay Supermarket in Pace MM Alam Road Lahore. After the successful business in Pakistan the company opened its 2 other branches one in Lahore city Wallton area and the other in Karachi city. In 2007 after the inauguration of Pace Gujrat, July 2007 the company started its business in Gujrat city with the same name Pick n Pay Supermarket. At starting this branch only deals with grocery items but after some time the Pick n Pay Gujrat becomes the leading store of the Gujrat city and it servers the customer in almost all kind of consumer goods like grocery, household, crockery and also stationeries items. Now 75 employs are working in Gujrats branch of Pick n Pay and it Possess 25 million of financial budget. In Pakistan over the past 15 years, significant changes have also taken place within Pick n Pay. These changes are based on a firm belief that our capacity to achieve service excellence is directly proportional to our capacity to establish an environment of self-esteem, respect and freedom amongst every employee in our company. Core principles
The Core principles that form Pick n Pay's business activities include: Maintaining long-lasting values, in spite of business practices changing with time. Developing respect for individuals, not as a strategic advantage, but because it is morally correct. Acknowledging the difference between timeless principles and daily business activities. Sticking to values even if this shows to put us at a competitive disadvantage
The four legs of the table:
The four legs of the table principle follows a simple analogy: The business is fundamentally likened to a table supported by 4 legs, on top of which the consumer is positioned. Each leg is required to be equally strong so that the table may remain balanced and upright. The four legs comprise: Administration Merchandise Promotion and social responsibility People Each part is equally important to the success and continued sustainability of the business. Each requires, and continues to receive, equal focus and management hold.

This is basically a store dealing in consumer products from grocery level to household level. First of all I would like to tell you that what a Pestl analysis is and how it is affecting the industry and organization. Pestl analysis is basically done to show that how external factors are affecting a particular sector or industry. It is basically opportunities or threats. Pestl analysis stands for P=political E=economical S=social T=technological L=legal Now I will explain one by one all these factors.
POLITICAL FACTORS
Political factors play a very vital role in the development of a country and its industry. The current political scenario suggests that political condition of Pakistan is not good. It is not suitable for investment, as a result affecting the industry. The investors are not feeling ease while investing in Pick n Pay because of its stock price is not up to the mark.
ECONOMIC FACTORS
The economic situation shows a mixed trend now-a-days. The inflation rate is increasing which in result decreases the purchasing power of customers. As a result
Pick n Pay stores revenue is decreasing because this is dealing in consumer products, and consumers are using these products repeatedly. The interest rate is currently 15-16 % which is also affecting investment patterns and as a result affecting the industry. The employment rate in the country is also not satisfactory. The prices of raw materials are also increasing.
SOCIO- CULTURAL FACTORS
It includes the demographic characteristics of consumers such as age, gender, race, preferences and tastes that affect an organization. These socio cultural factors might be the opportunity or threat for an organization. The consumers are demanding new and innovative products. The people are mostly living in villages that are mostly illiterate and have a significant role in a countrys economic development. The culture of Pakistan is not supportive for such superstores as more population belongs to lower class.
Technological Factors
It includes that how technology is affecting the industry in a country. As the technological advancement changed the scenario of shopping in all over the world but in Pakistan technological level is very specially in small cities like gujrat. People do not accept easily that kind of advancement due to lack of general knowledge about technology. There is a trend of bargaining during each kind of product purchasing. people are afraid of fixed computerized prices. A lot of people also don't trust on computerized system, thats why pick n Pay's sales are low in this area. Energy crises is also a huge problem now a days in Pakistan thats why Pick n Pay arranged some substitutes like generators and ups to run their operations to meet the standards it is also a cost consuming as well as time consuming.
Legal Factors
Taxes are imposed on imported goods which is affecting the consumer products industry. The government has imposed restriction on all shopping malls and super stores to close their shops till 8O, clock. It has an affect on the revenue because people of cities like to do shopping in night
5.2.6 Contribution of organization toward economic development: The Pick n pay company is playing an important role in Pakistans development. It is also providing air to economic and social sectors. It is contributing to reduce
unemployment in Pakistan. It gives equal opportunities to male and female for job. It is paying taxes and enhancing the revenue of economic sector of Pakistan. It is providing consumer products and in this way the company solving the customer problems by fulfilling their needs. Before it there was no such type of supermarket in Pakistan, the Pick n pay management took initiative and give a different and unique path to the market to serve the customer and fulfilling their need.

The organizational structure should be helpful & according to the management requirements. Employees know clearly that to whom they should report. I personally feel some lacks in hierarchical structure of Pick n pay Pace Gujrat. There is no Marketing Department in this branch which is a core department of any business and plays a key role to earn revenue.
There is no Human Resource Department in Pick n Pay Gujrat and due to this I think that the employs do not posses their positions according to their skills & abilities. There is no proper succession planning and training activities which have to be done so for. The hierarchal levels are not very much interactive and helpful. I have found that Selling department is overfull with employees. 5.4 Internee work 5.4.1 Introduction of Internees Office I have to work in Pick n Pay super market Gujrat branch. The office of this branch is located in the basement of Pace G.T road Gujrat. 5.4.2 Details of Supervisors There are 5 supervisors in the organization here is the name: 1. Waseem 2. Noman 3. Azeem 4. Mainly I learned how much practical life is related to the theory. I can say that my internship influenced me and be a helping hand for my future career a lot. I have got a lot of experience of practical work, real work environment, stressful working environment, and working with diverse customers when I was being deal with customers, following managers orders, completing projects and tasks, handling problems & conflicts in organization Above all to locate myself in such a competitive world and it also give me a lot of space to improve myself in different aspects that can help me in my future career when I will enter to the practical life. 6. Conclusions of the report 6.1 Summary of Key Conclusion It is the requirement of the MBA degree so I choose the Pick n Pay market because I like customer. During my internship I have gain many practical experiences. Through out my internship period I have also learnt some skills and abilities which will surely helpful in my future career. Pick n Pay store is providing the imported as well as local products with some delightful services for example free home delivery for regular customer, special discounts and credit card shoping for all the customers. I have observed some strength in the Pick n Pay Supermarket that it is a powerful retail brand. It has a reputation for value for money, convenience and a wide range of products all in one store.Pick n Pay Supermarket has grown substantially over recent years, and has experienced global expansion (for example it is working in South Africa, USA, Pakistan). The company has a core competence involving its use of information technology to support its international logistics system. For example, it can see how individual products are performing country-wide, store-by-store at a glance. A focused strategy is in place for human resource management and development. People are key to Pick n Pays business and it invests time and money in training people, and retaining a developing them. In Gujrat the Pick n Pay has no strong competitor. In Gujrat Pick n Pay has fantastic location on the GT Road in Pace shopping mall. In my internship period I have found a lot of weaknesses which are not good for super market. Pick n pay is the World's wide grocery retailer and control of its empire, could leave it weak in some areas due to the huge span of control. Pick n Pay sell products across many sectors (such as clothing, food, stationary, cosmetics), it may not have the flexibility of some of its more focused competitors. Pick n Pay Supermarket Gujrat has no Marketing department and due to this reason it can not marketize it self to all its markets customers. The Pick n Pay Supermarket Gujrat also working with out Human Resource department and because of this there is no succession planning & training activities perform in this branch. Pick n Pay suffering high turn over rate because the lack of Human Resource department. There are also some opportunities for the pick n pay market to overcome their weaknesses. New locations and store types offer Pick n Pay Supermarket opportunities to exploit market development. In Gujrat there is a huge volume customer market so that the Pick n Pay Supermarket has great opportunity to earn profit by advertising the Pick n Pay Supermarket 6.2 General Observation about the Sector I have selected the Pick n Pay super market for my internship. I worked 6 weeks in this organization. The pick n pay is doing business in consumer products like grocery, cosmetics, dairy, confectionary etc. The super market business is still in its introduction stage. It needs time to grow. The sector of super market is mostly like in big cities where the purchasing power of consumer is high. This sector is still in its growing stage it contributes a lot towards the economic development. The competition is rapidly increasing in this sector. But the government is
not supporting r for the development of this sector. The taxes have been increased which creates a very bad impact on this sector. This sector is still attacked by the local trader and marketer which are dealing in the same product. The competition is very tough but it still facing the problem. Government imposes a lot of restriction on that sector for example closing time 8 p.m. which is the great loss of the super markets. And increased in taxes also effect the sale of the markets. I would like to say that if the government takes keen interest in this sector then it will play a great role in our economy. 6.3 SWOT Analysis A SWOT Analysis is conducted by the company so that company is able to position itself to take advantage of different opportunities in the market and to keep away from or minimize market threats. In doing so, the organization attempts to emphasize its strengths and moderate the impact of weaknesses. The analysis is also useful for uncovering strengths that have not been fully utilized and in identifying weaknesses that can be corrected. Matching information about the environment with the organization's capabilities enables management to formulate realistic strategies for attaining its goals. Nature of Competition There is no skimpy competitor of Pick n Pay but with the growth of business in Gujrat is rivalry increasing of grocery stores. There are more than 25 grocery stores in the market in which some are strong competitors of Pick n Pay. For example Wah Wah super store, Smas Mart, Al-Fajar shoping mall etc. So the competition is rising day by day in this field.
Strengths Pick n Pay Supermarket is a powerful retail brand. It has a reputation for value for money, convenience and a wide range of products all in one store. Pick n Pay Supermarket has grown substantially over recent years, and has experienced global expansion (for example it is working in South Africa, USA, Pakistan). Weaknesses Pick n pay is the World's wide grocery retailer and control of its empire, could leave it weak in some areas due to the huge span of control. Pick n Pay sell products across many sectors (such as clothing, food, stationary, cosmetics), it may not have the flexibility of some of its more focused competitors. The Pick n Pay Supermarket Gujrat also working with out Human Resource department and because of this there is no succession planning & training activities perform in this branch. Pick n Pay suffering high turn over rate because the lack of Human Resource department. Opportunities To take over, merge with, or form strategic alliances with other retailers, focusing on some other cities such as Islamabad, Murree and Gujranwala etc. The stores are currently only trade in a relatively small number of cities. Therefore there are tremendous opportunities for future business in expanding consumer markets, such as Islamabad, Murree and Gujranwala etc. New locations and store types offer Pick n Pay Supermarket opportunities to exploit market development. In Gujrat there is a huge volume customer market so that the Pick n Pay Supermarket has great opportunity to earn profit by advertising the Pick n Pay Supermarket. Threats Being the leading Supermarket means that you are the target of competition, locally. Being a global retailer means that Pick n Pay is exposed to political problems in the countries in which it is being operates. The cost of producing many consumer products tends to have fallen because of lower manufacturing costs. Manufacturing cost has fallen due to outsourcing to low-cost regions of the World. This has lead to price competition, resulting in price deflation in some ranges. Intense price competition is also another threat for the Pick n Pay. In Pakistan due to inflation the prices of consumer products rises day by day and due to this reason the purchasing power of customers going down and Pick n pay Supermarket suffering decrease in its annually profit. Due to increase taxes on imported goods the prices of imported products also raise and the customers of imported products decreasing day by day.
7 Recommendations The Pick n Pay Supermarket financial results show a clear picture of its outstanding performance over the last two years but it is not enough there are number of issues that need to be soled in order to enhance its performance and also to effectively face the challenges set by the globalization and rapidly changing economic environment in Pakistan. On the basis of my observations & experience I have place some recommendations, suggestions and conclusions list down as under. I observe in my internship period in Pick n Pay Supermarket Gujrat that there is poor staffing, some of the departments like buying and selling departments are over loaded with employs and some like Marketing and Human Resources Departments even dont have the number necessary to run the company in effective way. Customer services should be improved, that will help to improve customer satisfaction and it will increase the profit. Pick n Pay Supermarket should develop its marketing strategies as currently very few people know about the products & services offered by Pick n Pay. It should install billboards and also be used print like news paper & pamphlets and electronic like radio etc Medias. The supervisor & specially sales persons attitude and behavior towards work and customers must be improved as due to staff competition every individual customer is vital. Increase service offering at competitive and affordable rates like online shopping.
Working environment should be improved by introducing good corporate culture in the organization so the employee satisfaction can be achieved, which results in low employee turnover. Coordination among the different departments of Pick n Pay Supermarket should be improved by introducing new practices through which department interact with each other properly. So they work together to achieve more customer and increase customer loyalty to achieve the organizational goals.
Marketing Strategies should be built and implemented by using proper market information, so that good strategies lead towards accomplishment of organizational goal efficiently & effectively. Pick n Pay Supermarket should also need to provide online credit shopping services which can be helpful to increasing its market size.
Pick n Pay Supermarket should also opened small stores so the new segments can be explored and targeted to increase market size.
As the Pick n pay Supermarket has become the leading Supermarket in Gujrat city and to main this position it should focus to control turn over rate by providing more facilities and motivate their employees to their work and organizational loyalty.
