This group is also known as the gay community and the term is loosely defined. The group is made up of supportive people, coordinated organizations and subcultures dealing with civil rights movements and acceptance issues within the world. Other issues facing the gay community are civil rights, avoidance, misunderstanding and the need to be accepted. Well-coordinated and funded goups-most religiously based-exist to keep GLBT Americans from being equal. The Human Rights Campaign is a non-profit organization that lobbys Congress and state and local officials for legal issues such as hate crimes, HIV/AIDS awareness, healthcare benefits, marriage, adoption rights, gender identity, anti-discrimination laws, and gay bashing in schools. Lambda Legal is an advocacy group that also works with the University of Phoenix 3 gay community on the same issue but also has played a role in many legal cases including Lawrence v. Texas, which invalidated sodomy laws. All of these advocacy groups and communities were formed for the gay community because of hate, discrimination and bias. The gay community wants to be accepted and treated the same as everyone else. So many legal issues and obstacles are in the way for the LGBT and the political climate keeps rising.
