More than 1, 000 years ago, the early Polynesians were an adventurous
people who were excellent sailors. They navigated using the sun and
the stars. Sometimes whole villages sailed in their longboats to live on
deserted islands. This is the story of Takai and his village.
Takai was waiting on the beach
for his father, Arama, to return
from fishing. When he saw his
father's wooden canoe, he ran into
the water. Almost immediately, he
realized his father wasn't happy.
"What's wrong?" Takai asked. "There
are no fish. There's nothing to take
back to the village! There's nothing
for us to eat," Arama replied.
Takai was twelve and knew his father needed help.
"I can go with you to look for fish. Please, Father. I can
help!" His father knew the dangers, but he could not go
back to the village without food. "All right, but you have to
do exactly what I tell you." Takai was very proud that his
father let him help. He jumped into the canoe and took
an oar. He and his father rowed the canoe away from the
land until it disappeared. After a long time, Arama put down his
oar, and looked up at the sky. Takai could see that his father
was worried. "There's a storm coming. We should go back."
But it was too late. Dark clouds covered the sun, and the wind started to
blow. They tried to row the canoe back to land, but the waves were too
big. The canoe started moving up and down violently. Suddenly, a wave broke
over the canoe, and Takai hit his head on the side. He lost consciousness.
When he woke up, Takai saw his father sitting beside him. He wasn't rowing.
He was just looking at the sea. "What happened?" Takai asked. "You hit your
head in the storm. And we lost the oars," Arama said. "Now we have to go where
the currents take us," he explained as he looked at the horizon. Then Takai saw
something high in the sky. "What's that, Father?" he asked. "It's a seagull," Arama
shouted excitedly. "It means that we're close to land!"

Now read the story in groups.
1. Arama was unhappy because .
2. Takai was proud because .
3. They couldnt row the canoe home because .
4. They built a shelter on the island because .
5. Arama left the island because .
6. Takai knew he was in paradise because .
Takai spent the next two days exploring the
island. It was covered in trees, and there was
a large mountain. It was not very different
from his home. Every evening he went down to
the beach and looked at the sea. But there was
no sign of his father's canoe.
One night, it was very clear. Takai could see
millions of stars. Suddenly, he heard someone
calling his name. He ran to the water and saw
a strange shape. It was a long canoe. Everyone
from his village was there! They all shouted
"Takai! Takai!" when they saw him. Now Takai knew
he was in paradise.
Takai and his father watched the seagull until
it disappeared. Then they were quiet. There
was nothing to do but wait. Takai looked at
the sea. He felt very alone, and he wondered
what his mother and sisters were doing. He
looked at the sea for a long time, and then he fell
asleep. Takai opened his eyes suddenly. His father
was shouting and pointing at a long, dark green
shadow on the horizon. "Look, it's an island!" he
said. As Takai watched, the shadow grew bigger
and clearer. The currents were carrying them to
the island! Soon they pulled their canoe onto a
smooth, sandy beach. They found some water to
drink and built a shelter. They were very tired.
The next day they started to explore the island.
There weren't any people, but there were lots
of birds and animals. The sea was full of fish.
They made spears from some branches and
caught two big fish. They tasted delicious. After
a few days, Arama told Takai that he wanted to
return to the village. "I'll go with you," Takai said.
"Not this time, Takai. It's a very dangerous journey.
This is a safe place to stay. Don't worry, I'll be
back!" Arama made new oars for the canoe and
left early the next day. Takai was very sad as he
watched his father row out to sea.
