2012-2013 Graduates
Master of Health Administration
Master of Science, Health Informatics
Dear Colleagues:
Welcome and thank you for your interest in our educational programs and our students!
We are again preparing another graduating class to carry the skills and values they have acquired through hard work and
discipline to serve the needs of health care organizations and their stakeholders. Each class brings intelligence and energy
to the task, and this years graduating class is equal to the challenge of upholding the standard set by those who have gone
before them.
Sadly, the Class of 2013 and the HMI family have also experienced the tragic loss of a classmate, student, and friend,
Aditi Avhad. We carry Aditi in our hearts and strive to maintain the standard of excellence, service, and friendship she
exemplified.
An integral part of the HMI mission is the support of the University of Missouri Health Systems and the School of Medicines mission to improve the health of Missourians while being a leader in the health care field. To this end, HMI has
been involved in research on the efficiency of delivering health care, improvements in quality of health care through
health informatics, and quality improvement projects in which our students participate.
I would like to make a special mention of our students involvement with the HMI teaching mission. In 2012, HMI students approached the department leadership to suggest improvements in the teaching of health management and informatics. HMI leadership then asked students to organize these suggestions, which they did in a very positive way, for
HMI education programs. We then created the Education and Student Services Quality Improvement Group, comprised of students and faculty, to discuss and implement the improvement recommendations.
We are pleased to emphasize the effectiveness of our educational programs in preparing the future generation of health
managers and health informaticians in Missouri. In 2011, we graduated 38 MHA (17 executive and 21 residential), 14
MHI (8 executive and 6 residential) and granted 17 Health Informatics certificates (4 executive stand alone and 13 residential MHA students). An estimated 100% of these HMI graduates from MHA and MSHI programs were employed in
the health care field approximately three months after graduating.
We are proud of the educational programs offered by the HMI Department:

IN MEMORIAM
ADITI AVHAD
Class of 2013
On August 2, 2012, we received the sad and shocking news that Aditi Avhad, about to begin her second
year in the Master of Health Administration program, had lost her life in a highway accident. Aditi had
joined our HMI family in August 2011, and soon made her mark as an outstanding student, colleague,
and kind friend with a wonderful smile and sense of humor.
Upon their return for the start of Fall 2012 classes, Aditis classmates organized a memorial on Tuesday,
August 21, 2012, to assemble a book of memories and mementos for her family and to dedicate a
memorial brick in the School of Medicine courtyard. Aditis father was able to attend, and graciously
met and talked with students, faculty, and staff.
In recognition of Aditis academic work and contributions as a student at the University of Missouri,
Aditi will be posthumously awarded a Deans Certificate at the Spring 2013 HMI Graduation Brunch.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATES
Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics
The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics, offered by the Department of Health Management and Informatics,
provides learners with the skills necessary to participate in the selection, use, and evaluation of information technology
applications throughout the health services industry. The certificate program is designed for physicians, nurses, managers,
information system designers, consultants, and others committed to the application of information technology for
improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of health services.
The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics is taught through an online distance-learning format that incorporates oncampus weekend meetings and requires completion of four courses (totaling 12 graduate credit hours):
The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics welcomes learners who currently work in health services organizations as
well as University of Missouri graduate students and others who are interested in evaluating, implementing, using, and
managing health information technology. The graduate certificate can also be a stepping stone to Masters or PhD studies
in Health Informatics at the University of Missouri.
The Certificate program is ideal for working professionals such as physicians, nurses, healthcare administrators, those
serving on hospital ethics committees or considering such health ethics issues in their daily employment, and students in
the health professions. The Certificate program will help the learner develop an understanding of the ethical issues related
to health and healthcare and will foster skill in analyzing and resolving ethical problems and conflicts in the healthcare
environment. Because courses are entirely online, students may continue fulltime employment while studying for the
certificate.
