POLICE-COMMUNITY TIES KEEP de BLASIO APPROVAL LOW,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;
VOTER OPINION OF REV. SHARPTON IS LOW
New York City voters disapprove 56 36 percent of the way Mayor Bill de Blasio is handling
relations between the police and the community and give him a 47 38 percent overall job
approval rating, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
Rev. Al Sharpton gets a negative 35 48 percent favorability rating, down from a
negative 40 45 percent in a November 18 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-peack) University. Black voters have a positive 63 19 percent opinion, while white voters have a
negative 19 71 percent view, with Hispanic voters divided 36 37 percent.
Rev. Sharpton is a mostly positive force in New York City, 44 percent of voters say, while
45 percent say he is mostly negative.
The wide racial divide continues in Mayor de Blasios approval rating, with black voters
approving 70 17 percent and Hispanic voter approval at 47 30 percent, compared to white
voters negative 34 56 percent score.
A total of 44 percent of voters are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the way
things are going in New York City, while 54 percent are somewhat dissatisfied or very
dissatisfied. This is the lowest satisfaction rating in de Blasios first year. Black voters are
slightly more satisfied than white voters, with Hispanic voters the most dissatisfied at 62 percent.
Police-community relations is the issue that defined Mayor Bill de Blasios election bid,
and seems to be-devil his first year in office, said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director
Maurice Carroll. Black voters are slightly positive on how hes handling the issue, while white
and Hispanic voters give him a big thumbs down.
On race, its deja vu all over again. De Blasio cant seem to close the gap between white
and black voter attitudes.

New York City voters say 47 45 percent that de Blasio has strong leadership qualities,
52 40 percent that he cares about their needs and problems and 55 32 percent that he is
honest and trustworthy.
He gets a small 46 43 percent approval rating for handling crime. His grades for
handling other issues:

46 36 percent for the public schools;

47 41 percent for handling relations between blacks and whites;
34 55 percent for handling the police department.
What sort of marks does the mayor get for his first year in City Hall? So-so on

leadership, good grades on honesty and on caring for the problems of his fellow New Yorkers,
Carroll said. Mixed grades for handling some critical issues.
Carriage Horses
New York City voters say 67 22 percent that de Blasio should not ban horse-drawn
carriages. This is the highest level of support for the horses since the Quinnipiac University Poll
began asking this question in January. Opposition to the ban is 59 percent or higher among every
group reported.
New Yorkers are more opposed than ever to that issue that City Hall seems to care a lot
about banning horse-drawn carriages, Carroll said.
Voters approve 48 17 percent of the job Comptroller Scott Stringer is doing, continuing
the year-long trend as the city official with the highest overall approval rating. But this is
Stringers lowest grade since he took office in January. Ratings for other city officials are:

40 19 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James, her lowest grade this year;
34 21 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, also her lowest grade;
37 26 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
From December 10 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,374 New York City voters,

with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell
phones.
