6. Summary of the Chinese culture Class

Cultures which can hold a mirror up to our society, and help us to better understand how and
why we do the things we do. Culture is a bond that ties the people of a region or community
together. It is that one common bond, which brings the people of a community together. The
customs and traditions that the people of a community follow, the festivals they celebrate, the
kind of clothing they wear, the food they eat, and most importantly, the cultural values they
adhere to, bind them together. Culture refers to the pattern of human activity and the symbols,
which give significance to this activity. Culture is represented through the art, literature,
costumes, customs and traditions of a community. Different cultures exist in different parts of the
world. The natural environment greatly affects the lifestyle of the people of that region, thus
shaping their culture. The diversity in the cultures around the world is also a result of the
mindsets of people inhabiting different regions of the world.
Man is born and brought up in a cultural environment. Man is not only a social animal but also a
cultural being. Man cannot survive as a man without culture. Culture fulfils our needs and
represents the entire achievements of mankind. This course helps me to learn how much
important that we should give for different cultures to understand people because it is closely
related to peoples behavior. Moreover, this class helps me to understand and compare Chinese
culture with my home culture. This class helps me to understand how to have respectful interact
with my professor and Chinese lab-mates. Group activity to Dalian zoo is really unforgettable
moment which helps me to know different communities and cultures and share my cultures with
foreign friends. Yes indeed I learn lot of things about how and what kind of gifts that I should
give for Chinese people. When comes to color, first thing I remember is red because red is
favorite for most Chinese people since Red symbolizes good luck in traditional mind. Chinese
people prefer to wear in red when they are celebrating some important festivals or events in their
life, such as wedding ceremony. With this course, I got to know that Chinese associate certain
colors with specific seasons: green represents spring, red symbolizes summer, white represents
autumn, and black symbolizes winter. The Chinese are said to have a fully developed system of
matching, coordinating, and contrasting colors and shades of light and dark in apparel. Teadrinking is a constituent part of Chinese culture. Hyders presentation helps to understand about
different types of Green tea and its advantages. Apart from Chinese tea this course helps me to
know much about Chinese food. No doubt Chinese food has a lot of variety and it is different
from province to province. There are many different types of food which can be categorized
roughly by four regions: Southern (Cantonese), Northern (Beijing), Eastern (Shanghai) and
Western (Szechwan). Among these, I always like to have Szechwan province because of its
spicy.
Last but not least, I always appreciate Chinese tutor Prof. Fan yu for sharing invaluable
information about Chinese culture and comparison with other cultures.
