UCIs students, faculty and staff reach beyond the classrooms


and laboratories to address social issues and improve the human
condition. At UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange Countys only
university hospital, UC Irvine Douglas Hospital houses the latest
technologies, strengthening UCIs ability to provide specialized
medical and surgical treatments to the regions citizens.
A major intellectual and cultural center, UCI engages the community through many public activities and events. Renowned
individuals speaking on campus have included Nobel Peace Prize

In 2011-12, extramural funding money coming from outside
sources, including federal agencies, industry contracts and private foundations in support of UCI research totaled nearly $305
million.

Underscoring strong community support, private giving to UCI exceeded $80 million in 2011-12. With an endowment valued at $300
million as of June 30, 2012, the University of California, Irvine
Foundation spearheads private fundraising efforts for the campus and, with the assistance of alumni and community leaders,
helps ensure UCIs future as a world-class research university.
UCI benefits the community and the world in countless ways
through its scholarly, scientific, creative and economic contributions. With a focus on the 50th anniversary celebration in 2015,
UCI already has raised more than $760 million toward a $1 billion
fundraising goal to support the campuss continued excellence in

| $5.6 MILLION: UCIs last 2012 stem cell research award for
work on Alzheimers disease and retinitis pigmentosa from the
California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In total, UCI has
garnered nearly $100 million in CIRM funding.

| 1ST: UC Irvine Medical Centers Dr. Nitin Bhatia and Dr. Samuel
Bederman conducted the initial robot-assisted spinal surgery on
the West Coast.
UCI researchers Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings, in collaboration with StemCells Inc., received a $20 million award to develop the
first human clinical trials in the U.S. of stem cell-based therapies.

A senior majoring in neurobiology and political science, Soraya Azzawi
is dedicated to raising awareness of human rights struggles and the
plight of refugees around the world. She has been awarded the 2012-13
UC Irvine XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship, established in 2004 to
recognize students committed to ethical leadership, peace and positive
global relations.
