CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Traffic Congestion is a growing problem in many of the cities in the Philippines over the
past few years. It has become problem not only in town but also at housing area and sub-urban.
This problem is due to the rapid increase in the number of vehicles in Cotabato City.
The increase in volume of vehicles is observed by traffic congestion during rush hours.
As a result a lot of elements contribute to traffic congestion in the area especially on
intersections.

1.2 Problem Statement

Traffic congestion problem can be encounter when the volume of vehicles is higher than
the capacity of a road or an intersection to accommodate all at once. Commuters together
with the people passing in an intersection will also be affected. In such difficulties, having no
proper behavior of the drivers as well as traffic management are the main cause of the
problem. In working with this problem, implementing road widening is such an expensive
project, therefore putting a Traffic Light System in an intersection may be the best solution as
of now. Traffic Light will use as a tool to have and efficient way to control conflicting flows
of traffic.
1.3 Importance of the Study
This study will provide valuable data on traffic management, regarding the volume of
vehicles and the need to provide additional traffic light in some intersections in Cotabato
City.
1.4 Scope and Limitation

This project is limited on installing traffic lights/signals at the intersection of orc. And we
also included pedestrian crossing lights containing both the WALK and DONT WALK
light indications.
1.5 Methodology
The purpose of this study is to install a fixed-time traffic light/signal for the sample
intersection. By doing that, the researchers will first look for an intersection in cotabato city
that is in need of a traffic light/signal to control conflicting flows of traffic. It is preferably
congested 4-way intersection. The main requirements that the researchers are looking for a
potential sample intersection are;
1.) Most congested intersection during peak hours. (i.e. 6am-8am or 4pm-6pm)
2.)
1.6 Review Related Literature
1.7 Definition of Terms
Traffic Light/Signal an electronic device that assigns right-of-way at an intersection or
street crossing by means of displaying the standard red, yellow, and green colored indication.
Fixed Time Mode this mode does not detect any approach, the signal continuously
cycles regardless of actual traffic demand.
Traffic The passage of people or vehicles along routes of transportation.

Peak Hours A regular period of heavy traffic especially at the beginning or end of
workdays.
Intersection Is the junction at the grade (that is to say, on the same level) of two or more
roads either meeting or crossing. An intersection may be three-way (a T junction or Y

intersection the latter also known as fork), four way (a crossroads), or have five or more
arms..
Traffic Congestion Is a condition as a road networks that occurs as use increases, and is
characterized by lower speeds, layer three times, and increased vehicular queuing. The most
common example is the physical use of roads by vehicle.

CHAPTER II: MARKET STUDY

2.1 Product
Proposed Fixed-time Traffic Light/Signal at the intersection of Sinsuat Avenue and
Governor Gutierez Avenue. The new traffic light/signal will consist of main display with red
yellow, and green lights, a pedestrian crossing lights containing both the WALK and
DONT WALK light indications, traffic signal cabinet containing the traffic signal
controller.
2.2 The Demand
Construction of the new traffic light/signals for the intersection at the intersection of
Sinsuat Avenue and Governor Gutierez Avenue is very important project for managing traffic
situation. The product will serve as a facility for motorist to reduce conflicting flows of
traffic for their daily route. Also, for further expansion of the city, the volume of the vehicles
will continue to grow and more traffic light/signals will be needed. And because this is the
first time for the city to have this project, the result will be a valuable data for improvement
of the project for the future.
2.3 The Supply
Every motorist need to learn road discipline, but as far as we can see

2.4 After Market Study

There are certain factors affecting the market. The demand of traffic light/signal is much
affected by the fact that it is a bit expensive. And the growth of the city is annually increasing
and in the future, these kinds of project will be needed. Due to its cost, the local government
could easily hire traffic enforcers to manage traffic conflicts rather than installing a proper traffic
signal.
