The Pearl by John Steinbeck:a jurnal of it by Lukman Awaluddin
Chapter 1

Its all start at this chapter. The author, John Steinbeck first show us the atmosphere of
happiness. They wake up in morning with no rush. For me, that morning are very limited for me. And
I think, it’s very limited to all homo sapient in this new era. I can’t find that kind of morning in school,
in hostel except at weekend. I will thanks to god if one day, everyone have that feeling every day.
The morning without stress, just found in my day in home. Home is eden!

The scorpion force me to memorize ten years ago’s incident. One day, my neighbour, alif
being age of 10 or something near that age was stung by a little scorpion. Unlike this novel, his
parent straight away take him to the nearest clinic. A week after that, he become normal again
without using a pearl of the world or sacrificing his life. Because it happen at this millennium.

The doctor at the novel show us the meaning by crudely. Thanks to god, i can’t find a doctor
like that for now. I hope there will no more persecution in this world. But we know, the persecution
are unlike past era. It look different nowadays.

Chapter 2
At this chapter, Kino take his family to his canoe, the one thing valuable that he own. For
now, it may looks like jobs. With fixed job, it will be the requirement to marry someone. My father
doesn’t have a canoe. He has car. I think if that car gifted to me. And my son can see that car and use
it one day, it same like kino’s family. A poor family. I pray that thing will not happen in my family. I
pray, someday, i will buy my own car. Or better, i invent my own car. That is my expectation. That is
my ambition, to be an engineer of automotive and designer.

Juana took sewed to coyotito’s arm. Not far like my mother do, when my neighbour alif was
stung, my mother took some of herb in our garden at back of our house to alif’s stung area as
remedy. I don’t know how far it works, but I know my mother know about it.

Kino found the greatest pearl of the world. Someday, I hope I can found something that
more valuable. I don’t want to find pearl. But I want to find a knowledge that will enhance human
life. I want to be like Thomas eddison, like Graham bell, like wright sibling or like Archimedes that
found greatest pie in the world that has sign, π.
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 is long chapter. And by John Steinbeck, it full of description. Everyone share the
joy with Juana and Kino, unless, that what they thinking. the presence of doctor burn my anger to
him much hotter. From the first, i can smell his bad intention. He came not for humanism. He came
for his materialistic. He want something from Kino. He want that pearl.

This chapter show us the doctor’s intelligence. He ask Kino to gift to his self for the pearl
safe. Kino refuse it. And that second was the doctors want. Kino take a peak at his pearl were
hidden. The doctor notice that. I always want to be as intelligence as that doctor, but i don’t want be
as crude as he was.

Kino also shows his intelligence. He hide that pearl at different spot. It remind us of
password protection. It is suggested to us to change your password monthly. That what I never
done. I use same password for all for my application and data for all pass years and next years.

The bravery of Kino proven here. As somebody or somewhat intruded his house, Kino
bravely attack that thing. Or in other hand, protect his entitlement, his pearl and his family. I want to
be like him. Protecting own family with all of what i can.

As i know the ending of this story early than i read. When Juana told to Kino to throw away
that pearl and Kino refuse it. I become angry for Kino’s decision. But i know and everyone know, that
what ruled by john Steinbeck, if Kino throw away that pearl at that time, this novel will be
uninteresting at all.

Chapter 4
I thought chapter 3 is the longest chapter, but chapter 4 also cost that time and my jargon
was test by it. John Steinbeck purposely make my mind freeze with his word. Kino goes to La Paz, I
think it like from Kampung Air to Kota Kinabalu capital city if there were at Sabah. When Kino want
to sell the pearl to the pearl buyer, he was cheated by them. Every pearl buyer has make a
discussion about it and sell to kino with a cheap price. Poor that time there is no ‘Jabatan Pengguna’
like we have now.

For one more time, Kino told by Juana to throw away that pearl due it sin and evil. kino with
his ego refuse that idea. Because he is man. Poor Kino, if he know what will that cost. Kino will
accept Juana’s suggestion.

Oppss..that is the end of chapter 4, where is the rest of word in that novel? oh! just a
description. It is from john Steinbeck, a man with description
Chapter 5
Thanks to god, this chapter doesn’t long. But it tragic. Juana want to throw away that pearl,
but Kino realize about it. Poor them, they have no idea what will happen next. Kino even slap Juana.
It is worst that could be done for men.

When they came back to their house, that brush house has started burn. And someone dig
it. It remind me the incident pass 2 or 3 week ago, when my neighbour, at least 8 house from my
house were in fire. It cost 42 brush house. The house are pity, so that the villager. Thanks to god my
house are not burn that day to.

Kino and his family goes to his brothers house, Juan Thomas and Appolonia. Family always
comes first. Family are the best. And Juan Thomas prove it. When everyone has bad intention, he is
saviour.

Chapter 6
Finally, i reach this chapter. And my god, i am with this story for now. I has the same feeling
like that novel. I can feel the atmosphere. This is most tragic chapter. But as a man, i will never cry
for other man writing.

This chapter can’t be associate with my life. I never kill somebody. I never run from trackers
that would do anything to get what they want. When coyotito was shot by the man. I can feel the
great sad in their heart. Kino has says, "if I give it up I shall lose my soul." He doesn’t know, it took his
son soul. Their soul too. Because their son are everything for them.

When they come back to La Paz, everyone can’t say anything. even a word. Even single
word. It is so sad atmosphere. They throw away the pearl with the evil. Away from them. To the sea.
Where it is should be. Man can’t handle it. Only ocean can. It a very sad ending.
