The History of

Tapas
Story 1

The word "tapas" is derived


from the Spanish verb tapar
"to cover." Before the 19th
century, European roads were
in bad condition and some were
originally old Roman roads or
trails dating from the Middle
Ages. Travelling was slow and
exhausting. Inns, or bodegas,
grew up along the roads, offering
meals and rooms, plus fresh
horses for travelers. Since few
innkeepers could write, and few
travelers could read, inns offered
their guests a sample of the
dishes available, on a "tapa."

No one knows exactly where this drink originated, but strangely


enough, it's not from Moscow! We muddle vodka with
cucumber, mint, lime and finish it with ginger beer.

This drink is more popular in Mexico than the margarita! A


lighter, pinker, slightly sweeter margarita is created with white
tequila, lime juice, a pinch of salt, and topped with grapefruit
soda.

Both Peru and Chili claim this "Latin Martini" as their own.
We make this Peruvian classic with Pisco Porton (brandy),
fresh lime juice, house made simple syrup and egg whites.
We shake it like crazy and serve it with a dash of bitters.
(Egg white substitute available.)

Created in the tropical paradise of the B.V.I., The Pain Killer is


a favorite tipple of sailors and landlubbers alike. With a blend of

This may be the world's first cocktail! The traditional Cuban


highball was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway. We use Gold
Miner's Agave Rum, distilled in Cottonwood, AZ. It is
muddled with lime, house made syrup, fresh mint, rum and
topped with soda.

Despite it's Polynesian name and Hawaiian association, this


fruity tropical Mai Tai is actually from California! It's made
with a mixture of white and gold rum, pineapple juice, orange
and/or lime juice.
