Reflection
This semester as a class we have studied the idea of genres. We have learned about the
various aspects of genre, which genres have affected, and our lives and how to compose three
different types of genres. We had lessons about creativity and also about how to write an
academic essay. As an individual I learned that writing is not based on a formula like a math or
science class but instead on ideas and how they are expressed. I have been shaped by this class
by being able to participate in class. I am not one to talk, however this class requires much
participation and I enjoyed speaking upon ideas and listening to others.
The personal essay was different from my previous essays because I have written mostly
works analyzing or reflecting another persons work. I have not gotten to write an essay about
myself. The process of this paper was to revise over and over again. I expressed my ideas in
different fashions. I did not want to just write a tell-all story but rather have a story that is
humorous. I focused on the enjoyment of the reader. By writing this essay I prepared my ideas
for the research paper by considering the audience of the research paper. The final draft describes
who I am as a person.
Composing the research paper was much tougher than the personal essay. The personal
essay was a free write while the research paper had certain aspects that we had to follow.

Approaching the research paper I had to pick a subject that I had a strong feeling about. I had to
rely on an issue that was controversial. This paper displayed my knowledge of rhetorical
strategies because we had to make the rhetoric more apparent than in the personal essay where
the rhetoric could be subtle. I developed researching credible sources instead of just searching
random sites and believing whatever I read.
I transferred my new genres into a PowerPoint presentation, a letter from a slave and a
sonnet. I appreciated the creativity that this project came along with. It made me create work
instead of just describes another persons work. I was able to learn about different genre
conventions and why conventions make a genre different from other genres. Each genre has its
own unique aspect.
All in all, I learned that writing is not as difficult as I made it. With writing one has to use
their brain creatively. I observed that writing for me is simple because I have a broad sense of
certain ideas I want to portray and that is why I am able to write effectively yet concisely. I have
learned how to write papers for my history class by using what I have learned in this class. My
research is more effective and I am able to use rhetorical strategies to relay information to a
certain audience.
