GT24/GT26

High efficiency, proven

Key benefits
Alstoms high performing advanced class gas turbines
have demonstrated superior versatility worldwide, delivering
maximum return to customers.

Operational versatility

The GT24/GT26 gives power providers unmatched operational

versatility, with online switchable functioning that either optimises
performance, which is ideal for peak demand situations, or
maintenance cost modes. Operating in the maintenance cost
optimisation mode offers as much as 30% more operating time
between scheduled inspections, increasing availability over
time and lowering maintenance costs. The versatility to switch
between the two operating modes allows customers to
balance performance against plant maintenance costs as power
demand shifts.

Gas fuel versatility

Alstoms robust sequential combustion chamber accommodates

a wide range of fuel variations. This specialised combustion
technology to enables customers to maintain lower emissions
with a wide range of fuel types without changing hardware.

Fuel oil capability

To allow power producers to respond to changing grid demands

or varying fuel supplies, the GT24/GT26 can burn fuel oil in
place of fuel gas when supplies are short. This high load fuel
switchover can be accomplished while the plant remains online
or interrupting power production.

06

High availability

Alstom GT24/GT26 gas turbines consistently achieve availability,

reliability and service factor performance that meets or exceeds
class averages. A proven track record across a fleet of more than
140 units validates the high availability of GT24/GT26 turbines.

Load range efficiency

Alstom GT24/GT26 gas turbines offer best in class all-round

efficiency with almost constant efficiency between 100% and
80% CCPP load.

Low emissions

The GT24/GT26 turbines produce low NOx emission of 15vppm

at 15% O2 dry. These same low emissions occur with low
part-loads.

Start-up times, ramp rates

Alstoms advanced class gas turbines offer 30-minute hot

start-up and a spinning reserve capability delivering 500MW in
just 10 minutes for a KA24-2 configuration and 350MW in only
15 minutes for a KA26-1 configuration.

Superior hot/cold performance

The GT24/GT26 can operate in ambient temperatures as high

as 55C and as low as -30C, making them an ideal choice for a
diverse range of operating environments.

availability, lower environmental impact

Unrivalled design features
The clean power-efficiency challenge

In todays cost-sensitive power markets, achieving high

efficiency is key to gas power plants operational success.
However, increasing environmental requirements make
achieving this efficiency challenging. Simply raising the
firing temperature at the turbine inlet to increase output and
efficiency doesnt work. The results, which include increased
emissions and additional thermal stress for the entire
turbine system, cannot be tolerated in todays eco-conscious
environment.

Alstom technology a superior solution

introduce it: The sequential combustion technology. By injecting

fuel into two combustion systems sequentially, power plant
operators can increase output and cycle efficiency without
significantly increasing the emissions, even at full and part load.
In addition, the GT24/GT26 gas turbines feature Alstoms
unique annular EV burners that reduce start-up emissions;
compressors and LP-turbines that feature high-efficiency 3D
blade profiles for optimal performance; multiple variable guide
vanes for better turn down capabilities; and solid welded
rotors that reduce maintenance time and improve availability.
These innovations enable gas power providers using the
GT24/GT26 to produce energy reliably, cost-effectively and at
a lower environmental impact.

For more than 50 years, Alstom has been developing and

perfecting an alternative design and has been the first to

Sequential

A unique concept powerfully

CAPTION_WHITE_lore_ipsum_(Optional)

Industry-leading burners
1st-stage EV combustor

The EV combustor features an annular burner arrangement. The

annular combustor distributes the hot gas circumferentially
at a much more consistent temperature than other combustors.
To maintain this uniform radial temperature, the combustor
pre-mixes compressor air with the fuel in the EV burner,
bypassing the need for film cooling in the convection-cooled
combustor walls. This process produces a single, uniform flame
ring in the free space of the EV combustion zone which does
not come in contact with the walls of the burner.

Sequential combustion design comprises two combustor-turbines

in series, where the exhaust gases from the first turbine feed the
combustor of the second.
An efficient 22-stage subsonic compressor feeds combustion air into
the first combustor. Fuel is mixed with the high-pressure air and
burns in the first combustor the annular EV combustor. The hot
gases drive the single-stage high-pressure turbine.

08

Unlike conventional turbines, fuel is then injected into a second

burner set and spontaneously ignites in the following annular
combustion zone, the SEV (Sequential EV) combustor, thereby
reheating the air and further expanding it through four low-pressure
turbine stages. The temperature of the EV combustor is maintained
at a nearly constant level, resulting in lower NOx emissions and
cleaner power.

combustion technology
executed

Innovative design enables higher

performance and lower emissions.

2nd-stage SEV combustor

The annular SEV combustor repeats combustion process. The

combustor contains SEV burners distributed in a ring, followed
by an annular combustion zone surrounded by convection
cooled walls. Exhaust gas from the high-pressure turbine enters
the SEV combustor through the diffuser area. By uniformly
premixing fuel with air in a swirling flow with high intensity, the
combustion temperature remains steady in the SEV. Each SEV
burner contains four delta-shaped vortex generators on each burner
wall, which form four pairs of vortices in the combustion air.

At that point, the mixture ignites spontaneously and, as in the

EV combustion occurs in a single, stable flame ring, operating
across its entire load range.
Both the EV and SEV do not require any parts replacement
prior to Hot Gas Path Inspection (HGPI), C inspection. This
mechanical simplicity assures the high reliability and availability
of the GT24/GT26.

Injecting then fuel through an air-cooled fuel lance and

distributing it through four jets into the vortex pairs forms a
perfect fuel/air mixture prior to combustion. Surrounding
the fuel jet with cool carrier-air delays spontaneous ignition
until the fuel/air mixture has reached the combustion zone.

09

Alstom GT24 and GT26 deliver the right

technology, the right performance and
the right versatility to meet power producers
clean power needs around the world.

Sequential

A smart idea, powerfully

1

The process at a glance

1 Compressed air

4 Vortex generators

2 Mixture

5 Ignition

Compressed air is fed into the EV burner, creating a homogeneous,

lean fuel/air mixture. The vortex flow, induced by the shape
of the burner, breaks down at the EV burner exit into
the combustion zone, forming a central recirculation zone.

The mixture then ignites to form a single, low-temperature

flame ring. The inner recirculation zone stabilises the flame
in the free space within the combustion zone, avoiding
contact with the burner wall.

3 Hot exhaust gas

The hot exhaust gas, which is low in oxygen content, exits

the first combustor and moves through the high-pressure
turbine stage before entering the SEV burner.

12

Vortex generators in the SEV burner execute the mixing process,

while carrier air, injected with the fuel at the SEV fuel lance,
delays spontaneous ignition until the mixture enters the annular
SEV combustion chamber.

Ignition occurs when the fuel reaches self-ignition temperature

in the free space of the SEV combustor. The hot gas then continues
its path into the low-pressure turbine.

Applications with high efficiency

Combined-cycle

Combined-cycle power plants offer an efficiently and

environmentally sound way to generate electrical power.
Alstoms GT24/GT26, with their sequential combustion
design, provide optimum exhaust temperatures for combinedcycle operations.
The two combustors in the GT24/GT26 turbines sustain
high efficiency and low emissions at part load operation by
controlling the inlet air flow through four rows of variable
guide vanes.
The sequential combustion process of the GT24/GT26 offers
high gas turbine exhaust conditions and in turn provides high
efficiency over the combined-cycle plants operational load
range, with almost constant efficiency between 100% and 80%
CCPP load.
As a result, combined-cycle plants using GT24/GT26 technology
maximise their long-term value with an unparalleled operating
flexibility a key success factor for todays competitive power
generation market.

Repowering

To respond to the most critical requirements of modern

power generation systems lower generating costs, greater
fuel mix capabilities, operational flexibility and minimum
environmental impact, Alstom has developed a hybrid plant
concept integrating the GT24/GT26 into conventional steam
plants. These plants combine operating and dispatching
flexibility with continuous fuel optimisation, low O&M costs and
moderate capital investment. This combined operation offers
excellent design flexibility by integrating high performance
sequential-combustion gas-turbine technology into the
operations of existing or new conventional steam power plants.

Co-generation

Utilities in many parts of the world are tuning to gas-fired

combined-cycle co-generation plants to cut emissions through
increased plant efficiency and better fuel utilisation. Alstoms
KA26 combined-cycle unit offers high flexibility for both heat
and power production in an economic and ecological way.
