A new leader
takes the helm

Fire prevention fun

Shamong native Glenn Robbins is new

Tabernacle Schools superintendent
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Tabernacle School District will
see a new superintendent walking the halls of the schools starting in November as Glenn Robbins Jr. takes over. The Sun spoke
with Robbins to give residents the
chance to learn a little more
about the districts new leader.
Robbins grew up in Shamong,
Tabernacles next-door neighbor.
He said it was a great small town
with lots of his family members
and friends nearby, which he
loved and considers very similar
to Tabernacle. Through making
friends at high school, playing
soccer and working with his dad
on water wells, he got to know the
Tabernacle area quite well, and it
has been amazing to be back, he
said.
Its been a blessing to come
back to where it began and give
back. Not many people have the
opportunity to come back home
and make a difference, Robbins
said. I have been over at Taber-

nacle a lot,
going to board
meetings and
back to school
nights. It has
been amazing
to
see
old
friends
and
family members.
Though RobROBBINS
bins said his
passion was soccer in high school
(he won a state championship),
his passion for education grew
not long after. Volunteering at a
number of soccer camps with
Shawnee High School and eventually Seneca High School as a
camp counselor, he learned he really liked teaching. He also mentioned his teachers, vice principal
neighbor and athletic directors
helped to really steer him on his
future career path.
Education started to find me
(rather than me finding it)... I
wanted to work with children and

OCT. 19-25, 2016 THE SHAMONG SUN 3

Turning type 1 into type none

Grace Place Preschool, with students from Shamong, raises money
to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes, asks community for help
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In the United States, 40 kids are
diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
each day. The children of Grace
Place Preschool, Pastor David
Jones and church members of
Lord of Life Lutheran Church are
doing their part to help spread
awareness and find a cure for
T1D, and would love the communitys help.
Grace Place Preschool is hosting a JDRF Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes on Nov. 15 at 9:30 a.m., raising money for diabetes research.
The walk will take place around
the parking lot or playground
with students, parents and members of the church and community. The community is asked to
help by participating or making a
donation.

This is a great cause. It helps

so many people (People should
attend to) educate themselves
about T1D and help a wonderful
cause. There are a lot of children
and adults depending on a cure,
Deborah DeMarco, Grace Place
Preschool director, said.
DeMarco is passionate about
finding a cure as a mother of a
child diagnosed with T1D. Her
daughter Deanna was diagnosed
in 2013 as a freshman in high
school, after several weeks of her
being extremely sick and misdiagnosed. Her daughter was
brought into the hospital almost
in a coma with her blood sugar at
850. Normal blood sugar levels
should be 80-130 before a meal and
not exceed 180 after a meal.
I have learned since my
daughter's diagnosis that many
parents are unaware of the warn-

ing signs of T1D, and sometimes

the diagnosis comes too late. If I
can prevent just one family from
suffering the loss of a child by educating them about those warning signs, then my work is worth
every minute, DeMarco said. I
will continue to fight until we
turn type 1 into type none.
Since her daughters diagnosis,
DeMarco has worked to arrange
JDRF walks to spread awareness
of the autoimmune disease and to
find a cure. JDRF, originally
named the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is the leading
global organization funding T1D
research. Since T1D can be diagnosed at any age, the organization
chose to drop the juvenile diabetes title and remain JDRF.
JDRFs funding has proven fruit-

Head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to elect your leaders

oting is one of the inalienable

rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the
Constitution gave voting rights to non-

white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort were spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States 18 years of age
and older the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take advantage of that right at the polls. The
General Election will be held Tuesday,
Nov. 8, and in addition to a contentious

and heated presidential election, there

are plenty of important local elections
on the ticket as well.
In upcoming issues of The Sun, you
will find information on exactly what
you are voting for at the polls, when
the polls are open and details on every
polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find information on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for,
make sure you make your way to the
polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Many people
before us fought for your inalienable
right to do so. It is our responsibility
to exercise that right.

Victims of domestic assault honored at ceremony

The Silent Witness Project also encourages people in abusive relationships seek help
People who are in abusive relationships
or are being harmed by someone in their
lives were encouraged to reach out for help
during a ceremony held on Friday, Oct. 7
that also remembered Burlington County
residents who lost their lives to domestic
violence.
The ceremony, known as The Silent Witness Project, featured several life-sized silhouettes that represent citizens of Burlington County who were killed by domestic violence. The event is held in October as part
of National Domestic Violence Awareness
Month.
The reason this annual event is so important is because it lets those who are
caught up in the cycle of domestic violence
know that they have a network of resources available to them and that they are
not in this fight alone, said Burlington
County Sheriff Jean Stanfield, who served
as the master of ceremonies.

Providence House, which provides comprehensive services for victims of domestic abuse and their children free of charge,
was joined in sponsoring the event by the
Burlington County Prosecutors Office, the
Burlington County Sheriff s Office, Rowan
College at Burlington County, Soroptimist
of Burlington County and Servicios Latinos de Burlington County.
While we mourn and hold in our hearts
those who lost their lives to violence this
year, the Silent Witness observance also
recommits us to working to prevent such
tragedies from occurring in the future,
said Mary Pettrow, associate director of
Providence House Domestic Violence Services.
The event was held at Rowan College at
Burlington Countys Mount Holly Center.
RCBC officials felt honored to host the
event again this year, said RCBC President
Paul Drayton.

Rowan College at Burlington County offers our support to victims of domestic violence. We have a number of resources
available for the college community and
encourage victims or witnesses of abusive
relationships to reach out to us, said Drayton. We join with Silent Witness in honoring those who have tragically lost their
lives, and look forward to a day when domestic violence no longer exists.

OCT. 19-25, 2016 THE SHAMONG SUN 9

CANDIDATES

MEET
THE

Every week, The Sun will ask the candidates in the Nov. 8 election for committee to respond to
questions pertinent to local issues. You can find responses online at www.shamongsun.com.
This weeks questions: 1.) What are some new ideas or approaches that you can bring to
Township Committee, and how will it benefit the town? 2.) What can be done to attract new
businesses to the town, and how does the town keep the businesses it already has?
1.) Im confident that I can provide new
ideas and new approaches to the Township Committee. Ive grown up using the
Internet and Ive seen firsthand the
power of that technology. The Township
Committee is full of good people who
have accomplished a great deal. That
said, the committee is made up of members who are all from an older generation. If we want Shamong to continue to
move forward, we need a variety of viewpoints brought to the table. Let us look at
Evesham Township, which partnered
with Uber to reduce drunk driving. That
type of modern, creative and innovative
problem solving is what Shamong needs

1.) What are your feelings on the recent

municipal budgets and tax rates in Shamong?
I think how we craft our municipal
budget is one of the most important issues committee members face each
year. Our budget has grown year after
year as weve seen taxes slowly increase. We need to make sure that our
towns budget doesnt see increase after
increase for no reason.
A clear example of our current committee failing the residents of Shamong was demonstrated on Jan. 5
through Ordinance 2016R-2, when the

larger principle. Its unacceptable for
committee members to tell local residents that we need to run our municipal budget like an individual
households budget, while voting to increase their own pay for the last six
years is totally unacceptable. The township committee voted to increase the
salary budget for committee members
by more than 17 percent from 2010 to
2016.
When I am on the committee, I will
make sure that any increase in the
budget is directly tied to a tangible benefit for the residents of Shamong. Ill
make sure our towns budget isnt wasted.

2.) What do you think can be done to

attract new families to move to Shamong?
Attracting new families is key to increasing prosperity for Shamong. Keeping taxes lower than the surrounding
towns is key to attracting families.
Along with keeping taxes low, our township needs to provide a host of improved
municipal services to the residents of
Shamong.
The development of a modern Internet infrastructure would attract families
and businesses to Shamong. Turning
Shamong into a leader in Internet service, both wired and wireless, will be one
of my top priorities as a Township Committee member. Reviewing the past year

community to see what they would like to
see Shamong develop. This committee
can also consider offering new businesses property tax breaks, micro-loans and
discounted fees and permits. Whatever
the committee decides, it must be in the
best interest of those living in Shamong.
The committee should also look into

meetings makes it clear that the current
leadership is uninterested in developing
Internet infrastructure of our town.
Lastly, I think an active and up-to-date
township website is key to attracting
new residents to Shamong. Go to Shamong.net, and look at the lack of updates the website has received. The website isnt one of an active town. Its not
the best Shamong can do.
Ill work tirelessly to make sure of all
these methods are done to attract new
families to Shamong.
Due to an email issue, Robert Rinaldi's week
two Meet the Candidates responses did not
run in last week's issue.

10 THE SHAMONG SUN OCT. 19-25, 2016

1.) First, I have always tried to look at

the township more as a business than a
municipality. One of the ideas that is always talked about across the state is, why
dont more towns in New Jersey share
services? By definition, a shared service
is a collaborative strategy in which business functions are concentrated to promote efficiency, value generation and cost
savings. A fun fact, there are 565 municipalities and 586 school districts in our
state, and most of them dont talk to each
other. Well here in Shamong, we talk to
everyone. In 2014, our Shamong district
court was bleeding money. We lost $60,000
because of increased costs and dwindling
recoverable fees/fine money. So, we decided to outsource our court system to
Southampton Township. With this decision, we have reversed our $60,000 loss
into a projected $10,000-$15,000 gain for
year ending 2016. This is a win/win for
both townships. A few weeks ago, we entered into a new shared service agree-

ment with another town, where

tinue to grow and support our town. One

thing the committee did at the end of 2015
was to create three local economic development zones within our town.
Each zone was designated at various locales, where most of our existing businesses reside. The goal of these zones is
to possibly provide some local government assistance, in the form of possible
tax incentives to help start a new business or to help an existing business, if
they are looking to expand. We are also
looking to grow our relationship with the
Burlington and Camden County Chambers of Commerce, to help possibly drive
new small business to Shamong.
Each member of the committee has been
and always will be the biggest promoters
of our town. However, we will never
make changes that would affect our small
town community environment. If you
have any ideas that may help our business efforts, please come to one of our
meetings.

1.) The Garden State has again led the

nation in outward migration for the
fourth time in five years. Why? High
taxes and overbearing government intrusion. We need to continue to do what we
can to control our part of the worldnot
easy, but a worthy goal. In Shamong, we
continue to find new ways to do more,
with less. One way we can do this is to
continue to "share services" with other
surrounding towns. For example, we
merged our local Shamong municipal
court with Southampton's and changed a
taxpayer debt into a surplus. We will continue to explore areas where we can identify potential savings in our school programs, the largest mandatory taxpayer
expenditure, to discover areas of duplication or waste. Our school student population has been going down for years, but
not the costs. Do we really need a $5 million new bond for school renovations
now? Why? Let's create an open forum

How? By sharing our natural beauty and

1.) One of the most important things

a community can do as a whole is take
care of its young people. Keep them
busy, keep them safe, keep them away
from drugs and alcohol. We have great
schools. We have great sports programs,
Scouting
programs,
music programs and more all thanks
to the countless hours of volunteers.
What we don't have is a safe place for
our older children to gather. The
school dances and fun nights are well
attended. If a place were established,
at least on a semi-regular basis, for

&

kids to gather, it would go a

long way in keeping them entertained, busy and out of
trouble. You're thinking about
the cost right? Well, we have a
church in the township, some
empty business space. These
are just two possibilities that come to mind. Would you hand
your child $5 or $10 for a safe
night out? A Saturday evening JEANNETTE AMODEO
dance perhaps? Let the kids
give their input. What would
they like? Besides Disney Land.

2.) We're a rural area, so

there is an upside and downside to new businesses. We
have some empty properties.
Some have been empty for a
very long time while some are
more recent. The type of business needs to be carefully
measured with its location. I

Sand Stand in Medford Lakes is hugely popular. Therein lies the sales pitch
and the focus of the pitch. Fill our
towns need and show them how it has

within the control of a town of our
size; for the most part, they simply
didn't fill a need for the long haul. The

However, he wants to make
changes in time, and with all
stakeholders involved, to build on
what it already has done.
I know the people of Tabernacle are tremendous people, Robbins said. It is my goal to help

Project started in 1990

PROJECT
Continued from page 6
The purpose of the ceremony
is not only to remember victims
of domestic violence, but to also
increase public awareness about
the problem, and to stress that assistance is available to those in
abusive relationships or situations.
We know that this issue affects all communities regardless
of color, race, age or culture,
said Angela Gonzalez, executive
director of Servicios Latinos of
Burlington County. During this
month of Hispanic Heritage and
Victim Awareness Month, we
would like to highlight the problem, and ask victims to break the
cycle, by coming out of the situation and looking for support before is too late.
The Silent Witness Project
traces its origin to Minnesota in
1990 when a group of artists created an exhibit of life-sized silhouettes, each representing a victim of domestic violence in their
state that had passed away due to
domestic violence. It has since become a collaborative effort to

honor victims lost due to acts of

domestic violence in communities throughout the nation.
There were 62,055 domestic violence offenses reported in New
Jersey in 2014, which is the most
recent year for which statistics
are available. That number represents a 4 percent decrease from
2013. Of those who were abused
in New Jersey in 2014, 42 died,
compared with 44 the previous
year. In Burlington County, there
were 3,450 domestic violence offenses reported during 2014, a decrease of 161 from 2013.
As the keynote speaker at the
event, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi urged
people in abusive situations to
take advantage of available resources.
I want to emphasize that there
are programs in place to protect
you and your family members,
Bernardi said. Let me say that
again there are programs in
place to protect you and your family members, but only if you
come forward and let us help you.
These are not just words, this is a
pledge and a commitment to you
that is being offered by the people
who have dedicated their professional lives to protecting society

and helping those in need.
