So,toreiterate,ChangelingsareFairies.Morespecifically,they'refey,andeverylastoneofthemwasoncea
human,bornonEarth,probablyraisedonEarth(Abductedbabiesandchildrenusuallydon'tlastlong),andstolen
awaybygodlikealienmonsterstobetransformedintoslaves.Theirsouls,andindeedtheirpersonalitieswere
shreddedbythorns,andtheyservedtheirusuallyterribleDuranceinArcadiainamindlessstupor.Butontherarest
occasion,aslavecatchesawhiffofmemorythatoverpowerstheirdesiretostayinArcadia,andtheyworktofree
themselvesbyoutfighting,outsmarting,outcharmingoroutbargainingtheirfreedomfromtheirKeepers.Theyearn

theirsweetliberation,andcanbeginthehealingprocesstomendtheirbrokenbodiesandbrokenminds.Buteven
so,theyhavetodealwithallsortsofproblems.Oddsarethateitheralongtimehaspassedintherealworldsince
he'sbeenabducted,leavinghimanachronisticallystranded,orashorttime,leavinghimasanadultwhilehis
familyexpectshimtobeachild.Secondly,aFetch,anidenticalsimulacrumcreatedbyhisKeeper,waslefttolive
hislifefromthemomenthewastaken,andoddsarehe'snotwillingtogiveuphisplacewithoutafight,ifheeven
knowshe'snotreal(Imaginebeingstalkedandhunteddownbyamonster,andOHMYGODHE'SYOU).Evenif
theChangelingcangethislifebackontrack,he'sstillaChangeling.He'sforeverchanged,andbeingtrackedby
theGentry,ChangelingPrivateersandLoyalists,aswellasthemoregutsydenizensoftheHedge,andhisfamilyis
consideredfairgametogethisguarddownitsenoughtodestroyhisalreadyfragilementalstate,whichis
literallyerodinghisrelationwithreality.

KithsandSeemings
KithsandSeemingsaremoreofamethodofclassificationofwhattheywereforcedtodowhileinArcadia,and
whatkindofpowersmanifestedfromtheirDurance,sincenotwochangelingsaretrulyalikeandcanfallunder
severalcategories.Achangelingcanlooklikeacatandnotbeabeast,oranelflikearchercanactuallybean
Ogre.Thisaspectreallychangesbetweenthetwoeditionsofthegame.
Infirstedition,yourSeemingisthegeneralclassofpurposethatachangelingwasmadetofillinArcadia.The
ChangelingisgrantedablessingandacursebyhisSeeming,andcanfurtherexpand(oreschew)hisblessingwith
aKith,thatclassifieshimevenfurther.
Beastsweretakenandtransformedintoanimalsandmonsters,usuallybyhavingtheirbodiesandminds
swappedaroundattheirKeeper'sdiscretions.Theyaren'tverysmartbuttheygetshitdone,andenjoybetter
animalisticperceptionsandasortofanimalmagnetism.TheflavorofanimalisdeterminedbyKithmost
arefairlyliteral(Broadbacksarebasedonworkinganimals,Hunterheartsonpredators,etc),butsomeare
moremetaphorical(Truefriendsarebasedonloyalanimalcompanionsandbelovedpets,Riddleseekerson
beastsassymbolsofintelligence/wisdom/learning).
DarklingswereabductedwhentheybrokesomeseeminglyrandomandarbitraryrulethattheFaesetin
place.They'regrimderpboogeymen,nightmarecreatures,andvariousotherfantasticthingsthatgobumpin
thenight.They'realsosmartandsneakygits.ThesunfuckswiththeirContracts.Kithsareallaboutspecific
flavorsofspooky,fromslendermenwrigglingthroughthepipestocreepintoyourbedroomanddragyou
awaytolifesuckingmonsterstoEdwardScissorhandsstyleslasherscompletewithbladehands.
Elementalsweretransformedintosomekindofelement,hencethename.They'renotreallysocialcapable
orsmart,butliketheBeaststheycangetshitdone,andtheycanmakethemselvestougherwithglamour.
Naturally,theirKithsfocusonwhatspecifickindofelementtheyturnedinto,fromtheclassicelementslike
fire,earth,airandwatertomoreesotericoneslikesteel,pollution,ice,etc.
Fairestweretreatedlikeroyaltyortreasures,untiltheirKeepergotsickofthemanddumpedtheirasseslike
anAlpha.OtherChangelingsscoffatthesupposedlyterribleDurancesoftheFairest(howcouldbeing
treasuredandadoredbeallthatbad?),butthisoftenjustmakesaStockholmytimeofrapeandtorture
worse.TheFairestaretoooftencruelandmanipulative,andwhilesomemaytrytofightsuchtendencies,the
bookprettymuchsays"nah,man.They'reallbitches".TheirKithsfocusonexactlywhytheirbeautywas
importantlivingartpiece,courtesan,starinthenightsky,noblewarrior,andmore.
OgreswereforcedtoservebrutalDurancesthatmadethembigandstrong,whetheritwasfightingineternal
warfare,orbuildinghousesattheendofawhip.Thoughnotnecessarilystupid,Ogrestendtogetpissed
mucheasierthanmostotherSeemings,andhaveatendenIWILLRENDTHEFLESHFROMYOUR
BONESANDBOILYOURENTRAILSINASTEW,HUMANAlthoughthismayseemafairlynarrow
Seeming,it'sgotasurprisingamountofKiths,fromthefairytaletrolllivingunderthebridgetoBigfoot
esquewildernessmonsterstolivingstonegolemstomagicalhags.
Wizenedweretheliteralslaves,andthesubjectsofconstanthumiliationatthehandsoftheirKeepers.
They'reusually"less"insomeway,whetherthey'rethinner,shorterorjustlesssubstantial.Ifyouwantto
playatradesmanoramoretraditionalclass(KithsincludestufflikeSoldiers,Blacksmiths,etc),thisisthe

seemingforyou.They'realsohellafast,sothey'reperfectifyouwanttoplayacharacterwithanimble
Mien.
Insecondedition,KithandSeemingeffectivelyswapplaces.Now,yourKithdeterminesexactlywhatpurposeyou
servedinArcadiaAntiquarianswereresponsibleforlookingaftertheirKeepers'privatecollections,Brollachans
wereusedtoterrorizeothersataKeeper'sbehest,Coldscaleswerepetreptiles,Gravewrightswereboundtothe
restlessdead,Leechfingerswerepredators,Razorhandswerekillers,andthelistjustkeepsgoingonandyour
SeemingishowyoumanagedtotwisttheWyrdtogetyourselfthehelloutofArcadia.Still,yourSeemingdoes
defineaparticularblessingandacurseyouget,aresultofhowyou"imprinted"yourself.
2eBeastsescapedbyabandoningtheirhumanity,revertingtoprimalbehaviorandinstinctsandusingthatto
slipanychainstheGentryhadinplace.Naturally,thisaffectstheirBlessingandtheirCursebreakinga
culturaltabooatagreatpersonalcostrestoresapointofClaritythroughtheClarityofAbandon,whilstA
Beast'sBurdenmakesitharderforthemtoescaperestraintsandbeingconfinedorimprisonedcancausea
Claritybreak.
2eDarklingsmadethehardchoice,sacrificingsomedeeplyheldmoralorotherwiseactinglikean
evil/selfishprickandembracingthestealthypowersofdarknesssotheycouldslipaway.ClarityofAbandon
isaBlessingthatmeansthataDarklinggetsafreeClaritypointiftheystepinandmakea"badchoice"on
behalfofsomeoneelse.Ontheotherhand,AShade'sDarknessisaCursethatcausesthemtosuffera
Claritybreakingpointwhenevertheytrustsomeoneblindly,evenaclosefriendoralover.
2eElementalsescapedbysurrenderingtheirindividualidentities,givinguptheirperceptionofthe"self"
andlettingthepoweroftheelementssuffusethemsotheycouldrendtheirwaythroughtheHedgeand
return.TheirBlessingistheClarityofForceslettingthemscoreafreeClaritypointiftheycan
retroactivelyapplymeaningtoanactof"purechaos"earlierinsessionwhilsttheirCurseisBurning
WithoutEgo,whichmakescoldironextranastytothemandcausesthemtosufferClaritybreaksif
confrontedwiththedestructiveimpactoftheirchaoticactions.
2eFairesttappedintosuppressedpotential,takingonaleadershiproledespitegreatriskandsacrificeto
helpothersescapeArcadia,andsowerereleasedfromtheThornsthemselves.Bornleaders,theygainthe
ClarityoftheCrownBlessing,whichgivesthemafreeClaritypointiftheymanagetobluff,blusteror

balancedbytheCursecalledWeightoftheRighteous,whereseriousharmtosomeoneresultingfroma
Fairest'sleadershipdecisionsisaClaritybreak.
2eOgresescapedbywaitinguntiltheyhadbuiltupenoughphysicalandemotionalstrengthandarmortorip
andteartheirwayoutofArcadia.Needlesstosay,theirBlessingandCursearefairlystraightforward
ClarityofComfortgivesthemfreeClaritybysolvingproblemswithviolence(orthreatthereof),whilstHurt
PeopleHurtPeoplemeanstheysufferClaritybreaksifpeoplepointoutphysicaloremotionalpainthatthe
Ogreissufferingfrom.
2eWizenedescapedbyutterlymasteringaspecificartwhentheunrealityofArcadiacausedthemtofail,
theyrebuilttheirbodieswithtoolsandimplements,reshapingthemselvesinordertoachieveaperfected
statethathelpedthemslipawaythroughtheThorns.TheirBlessingistheClarityofComfort,wherethey
canmoreeasilygetexceptionalsuccessesforusingtheirparticularartwhentheydosorunawayfromtheir
problems,whichcanalsogivethemfreeClaritypoints.TheyalsosufferaCursecalledTheProblemWith
Perfection,wheretheysufferaClaritybreakwhenevertheyfailarollrelatingtotheiruniquetalent.
Grimms,anewSeemingaddedinDarkEras,escapedfromArcadiabyrealizingtheywerebeingusedas
actorsandimmersingthemselvesinthestorybymasteringtheirrole,theycouldforcethestorytogivethem
a"happyending"andsendthembacktoEarth.TheirBlessingistheClarityoftheStory,wherehaving
someoneautomaticallytreatthemaspertheroletheyareplaying(MadScientist,CuriousChild,Sweet
Princess,etc)willgivethemafreepointofClarity.Meanwhile,theirCurseisSoItHasBeenWrittenthey
sufferClaritybreakingpointsiftheyactinawaythatbenefitsthembutrequires"breakingrole"soifthe
SweetPrincessRazorhandmercilesslycutsthethroatofthebanditshe'sbeingheldupby,thenshecan
potentiallygonuts.Atthesametime,whennotinrole,GrimmsaremucheasierfortheGentryandtheir
Huntsmentofind.

TheMienandtheMask
AChangelingspermanentlytransformedformiscalledaMien.Becausethey'retiedtotheWyrd,theirMien
changeswiththeirPowerStat,CourtMantle,Entitlement,ageandwhathaveyou.Theirhumandisguiseinthe
realworldiscalledtheirMask.Whendealingwithmortals,what'sleftofyoursoulformsasortofdisguisethat
hidesyourmonstrousnaturefromthenormiesaslongasyouhaveGlamourreserves.TheMaskretainsyour
originalform,lookinglikehowyouusedtolooklikeasamortal,butwithminordetails(AnOgrelooksfatter,a
Beastwillhaveleatheryorcallousedskinandhornswillbeinvisible,whileaFairestmaybetallerorhaveasortof
strangeattractionthatdrawspeopletowardsher).HigherWyrdmeansmoreofyourMienseepsthroughtheMask,
soverypowerfulChangelingsdoublyhaveahardtimefittinginwithpeople(atthatpointthey'vegotfrailtiesup
theass,meaning,say,theyruninterrorfromblueclothingorbreakoutinzitswhenthemoonisout,inadditionto
adiminishedmentalstatewheretheyloseClarityeverytimetheysleep.)

TheWyrd
Iftherewaseveranecessaryconstantintheuniverse,it'stheWyrd.TheWyrdisanoldGermanicwordorsome
shitthatprettymuchmeansFatewhichleadstosomecleverwordplay(GETIT?FAE?FATE?AHAHAHAHA!
AMAZING!),andwhileit'stiedtoeverythingthatexistsonlythefeyhavethepowertomanipulateit.Itactsasan
adhesivebetweeneverysinglethought,atom,andconceptinexistence,andsinceitisdestinyinallitsforms,it
determinesreactions,repercussions,andcausesandeffectsbetweeneverythingintheformofContracts.This
meansthatit'sbecausefirehasanumberofcontractswiththeWyrdthataflameishottothetouch,thatitcanhurt
you,thatitcooksflesh,orthatitdieswhenitrunsoutoffuel.Becauseit'sonlycontractssealedbytheWyrdthat
keepallofrealityfromunravelingandfuckingouruniverseover,it'skindofabigdealthattheworstantagonists
canraperealitywithjustathoughtiftheycatchyouinthewrongplace.
Luckily,becausetheyspendtimebeinginsuchcloseproximitytowheretheWyrdisthestrongest,humanstaken
toArcadialearnhowto(Forcedto,really)strikedealswithelementsandconcepts,otherwisediefromexposureto
TimeCubelogic.ThisiswhereChangelingsgettheirContracts,semimagicalspellsthatallowthem,fortheprice
ofapointofGlamour(Emotionalenergytakenfromhumans),tomesswithoneaspectofrealitywhentheywish.
Ontopofthat,contractsalwayshavealoophole,knownasaCatch,wheretheconceptMUSTgrantyouusageof
thepowerforfreeifcertainconditionsaremet.

Hence,Freeholds,keepswithintheHedgewhereChangelingsandfriendlyHobgoblinscometocongregate.Pretty
muchallChangelingsarewelcome,andthere'snoprisons.Ontheotherhand,trustmustbeearned,and
banishmentisdistributedlikecandy,beingtheusualpunishmentsforOathbreakersandcriminals,anddelivering
otherChangelingsintocaptivityearnsyouanicedeathsentenceattheendofaColdSteelaxe.Blahblahblah,it's
allboringstuff,really,soletstalkaboutthefarmoreinterestingCourtdynamic.Ittiesintopoliticsanyway.

TheCourts

TheFreeholditselfisusuallydistributedintoCourts,whichcirculatetheirpowertokeeptheFaefromshowingup.
Itmakessenseincontext,sincetheFaedon'tunderstandtheconceptofwillinglygivinguppowerandthishurts
theirbrains.JoiningaCourtisusuallyfree,andnabsyouafreedotinoneoftheirContracts,aswellasabenefitof
gettingtwopointsforeveryonepointofGlamouryouwouldregularlyharvestfromyourCourtemotion.Youcan
workyourwayuptheCourtladderthroughyouractionsorthroughyourdevotiontoemotionortheme,andyou
begintoembodyyourSeasonmoreandmore,aswellashavingaccesstoawesomepowersthatwouldotherwise
beunavailable.AndsinceChangelingsusuallydon'thaveheirs,whatwiththeinfertilityandwhatnot,soeveryone
hasachancetobecomeaNoblethroughtheiractions,evenpossiblyearnthecovetedtheCourtCrown,atitlethat
grantsabsolutesovereignty(Andniftybuffsforyourbros)whileyourCourtrulesovertheFreehold,andthe
CrownbecomesFreeholdKing.
JustacouplenotesaboutCourtsthattheaverageplayermightmiss:ThehigheryourCourtMantleis,theeasierit
istoidentifyyouraffiliation(ASummerCourtierwillbesunburned,orhavewavesofheatemanatingfromhim
andsmelllikechlorinefromapool,forexample).However,ontopofthat,witheverydotyouaddtoyoumantle
yougetanicelittleadvantagetogoalongwithit,suchasWinterCourtiersgettingbonusestoSubterfuge.
YoucanalsoeschewtheCourtsandgoCourtless,butyouendupmissingoutonsomebeneficialstats(Aswellas
drama).Evenso,there'salwaysCourtGoodwill,whichyoucanearnbybeingbroswithvariouscourts,anddoing
soallowsyoutocallonthemforfavors,oreventohavethemteachyoutheirrestrictedCourtContracts(Upto
threedots).NotethatyoucanearnCourtGoodwillevenifyou'reinaCourtyourself,thoughit'susuallyharder.
YoucanleaveaCourtatanytime,sinceChangelingsunderstandthatperspectiveschangeastheydo,andwhenyou
switchoveryourcurrentMantleiscutinhalftobecomeyourGoodwilllevel.Thatsaid,aChangelingwho
switchesCourtstoofrequentlyisgoingtobeverysuspiciousandisnotlikelytogetanyGoodwillatall.
Courtsaregoingtogetahugeboostinimportancein2e,wheretheirprimarypurposeistoprovideobstructionsto
andshieldingagainsttheHuntsmenincrediblypowerful,almostunkillableshapeshiftingFaebountyhunterswho
cantakeontheformofabsolutelyanythingandwillneverstopchasingachangelinguntiltheyhavedraggedit
backtoitsformermaster.
SeasonalCourts
ThemostrecentandbyfarthemostpopularCourtsystem,atleastintheAmericas,wasestablishedwiththeFour
Seasons(notthehotel).BecauseeveryChangelingisdrawntoaparticularopinionofArcadiaandtheirdurance,
theSeasonalCourtsweredesignedwiththatinmind,tonudgeChangelingsintogroupswheretheycanhangout
withpeoplesharingsimilarperspectives,tofosterfriendshipsandtoactassupportgroups.Thecirculationruleof
thumbconsistsofeveryseasonrulingfor3monthsoftheyear,duringtheirrespectiveseasons(Winterrulesfrom
DecembertoFebruary,etc)butasperusualtherulesaredifferentineveryFreehold.
However,justbecausethey'redesignedtocomplementeachotherdoesn'tmeanthatthere'snoconflictorstrife.
Differingideologiescausehell,withSpringdirectlyopposingFallbecauseonechoosestoforgetandtheother
choosestoremember,andSummeropposingWinterbecauseonebeatstheirchestandtheotherhides.For
referenceofhownastypoliticscanget,inthefluffoftheCorebook,GrandfatherThunder,theSummerKingof
Miami,hasforciblytakencontrolofthefreeholdandhasdeclaredthattheSummerCourtwillbeitspermanent
ruler,andtheotherCrownsareallwillingtosteponeachothertogetthechancetopunchhimintheface.And
incidentally,hisrefusaltogiveuppowerjustsohappenstobeweakeningitsdefensesagainsttheGentry.
Interestingly,theSeasonalCourtsembodytheKblerRossmodeloftheFourStagesofGrief.SpringisDenial,
SummerisAnger,AutumnisBargainingandWinterisDepression.Acceptanceisbad,though,sincethisprobably
makesyouatreacherousLoyalistfuckhead.OrpossiblyaDuskcourtier.

ThethreatoftheTrueFaecanbestbecomparedtothethreatoftheAntediluviansofVampire:TheMasquerade,if

pointforGehenna.
