NEAR THE NATURE

ALOEVERA :

Aloevera a succulent plant species. The species is

frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since
the beginning of the first century AD. Extracts from
Aloevera are widely used in the cosmetics and
alternative medicine industries, being MARKETED as
variously having rejuvenating, healing, or soothing
properties. There is, however, little scientific evidence
of the effectiveness or safety of Aloevera extracts for
either cosmetic or medicinal purposes, and what
positive evidence is available is frequently contradicted
by other studies.

Medicine Value :
1. Your houseplant could fight your heartburn.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive
disorder that often results in symptoms including
heartburn. A recent review explains that consuming 1
to 3 onces of aloe gel at mealtimes could reduce the
severity of GERD and other digestion-related problems.

The plants low toxicity makes it a safe and gentle

remedy.
2. A little aloe vera gel a day could keep bacteria on
fruits and vegetables away. In a recent study, an aloe
vera gel coating on tomato plants was able to block,
not all, but many types of harmful bacteria. Similar
results were found in a different study with apples. This
means that aloe gel could help produce stay fresh for
longer without the need for potentially dangerous
chemicals.
3. An alternative to mouthwash. A 2014 study found
aloe vera extract to be a safe and effective alternative
to chemical-based mouthwashes. The plants natural
ingredients, which include a healthy dose of vitamin C,
can block plaque and also provide relief if you have
bleeding or swelling gums.
4. The new blood sugar regulator is greener than ever.
Might aloe vera be able to help people with diabetes
regulate their blood sugar levels? One study conducted
in Thailand found that two tablespoons of aloe vera
juice per day caused blood sugar levels to fall in people
with type 2 diabetes, which means it may have a future
in DIABETES TREATMENT. These results were confirmed
with a later study from Turkey that used pulp extract.
5. A little extra push. Recently, a team of Nigerian
scientists conducted a study to determine whether local
folklore about aloe vera was true. Experimenting on
rats, they found that gel made from typical aloe vera
houseplants was able to relieve constipation.

Name in other language :

English Name Aloevera
Hindi Name Ghikwar

Location :
Aloe vera, a thick, long-leaved plant native to Africa,
can now be found across the globe. Although once
unique to the African continent, aloe vera is becoming
an increasingly familiar sight in many other places
around the world like the West Indies, the Middle East
and Australia; the succulent plant also makes frequent
appearances in North American windowsills, nurseries
and health food stores, its increase in location
coinciding with the plants growing popularity in the
gardening and medicinal world. Recognized as both a
decorative plant for the home and a natural healing
agent and toxin for the body, aloe vera has many uses,
its multifaceted nature accounting for much of its
spread to other regions. No longer is aloe vera a
foreign, African plant: as the plant continues to be
naturalized, spreading and growing in new
environments, it will become an even bigger global
force to be reckoned with.

HOW TO CULTIVATE & MAINTAIN :

Aloevera has been widely grown as an ornamental
plant. The species is popular with modern gardeners as

a putatively medicinal plant and for its interesting

flowers, form, and succulence. This succulence enables
the species to survive in areas of low natural rainfall,
making it ideal for rockeries and other low water-use
gardens. The species is hardy in zones 811, although it
is intolerant of very heavy frost or snow. The species is
relatively resistant to most insect pests, though spider
mites, mealy bugs, scale insects, and aphid species
may cause a decline in plant health. In pots, the
species requires well-drained, sandy potting soil and
bright, sunny conditions; however, Aloe plants can burn
under too much sun or shrivel when the pot does not
drain water. The use of a good-quality commercial
propagation mix or packaged "cacti and succulent mix"
is recommended, as they allow good drainage. Terra
cotta pots are preferable as they are porous.
Potted plants should be allowed to completely
dry prior to rewatering. When potted, aloes become
crowded with "pups" growing from the sides of the
"mother plant", they should be divided and repotted to
allow room for further growth and help prevent pest
infestations. During winter, Aloevera may become
dormant, during which little moisture is required. In
areas that receive frost or snow, the species is best
kept indoors or in heated glasshouses. Large-scale
agricultural production of Aloevera is undertaken in
Australia, Bangladesh, Cuba, the Dominican Republic,
China, Mexico, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Tanzania and
South Africa, along with the USA to supply the
cosmetics industry with Aloevera gel.

USE OF THE ALOEVERA :

Aloe Vera is one of the most famous plants in the world,
and is has been used frequently in history for its
medicinal properties. Legend has it that the Aloe Vera
was Cleopatra's beauty secret, is mentioned in the
Bible in over a dozen passages, and now has scientific
research to support its benefits. The Aloe Vera plant is
easy to grow even in cold climates and many people
grow it as a house plant. Aloe Vera extracts can drank
as a juice, applied as a topical lotion or taken in dried
extract capsules. When you are purchasing gel or juice,
look at the concentration of the product to ensure its
not diluted and you are buying pure Aloe Vera.

METHI

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum), native to

southern Europe and Asia, is an erect annual herb with
white flowers and hard, yellowish brown and angular
seeds. Known as methi in Hindi, it is a popular
ingredient in many North Indian dishes.

Fenugreek Nutrition
Fenugreek seeds and leaves are strongly aromatic and
flavorful. Seeds are bitter in taste but lose their
bitterness if roasted slightly. They are rich in vitamins
such as thiamin, folic acid,
riboflavin, niacin, vitamins A, B6, and C, and are a
storehouse of minerals such as copper, potassium,
calcium, iron, selenium, zinc, manganese, and
magnesium. Fenugreek leaves are a rich source of
vitamin K as well.

MEDICINE VALUE :
Fenugreek seeds are rich source of trigonelline, lysine
and l-tryptophan. The seeds also contain a large
amount of saponins and fibers that could account for
many health benefits of fenugreek.
Increases Breast Milk - Fenugreek is used as a
galactagogue by nursing mothers to increase
inadequate breast milk supply. This is evidenced by a
study which found that consumption of herbal tea
containing fenugreek seeds enhanced breast milk
production in mothers and facilitated infant birth weight
regain in early postnatal days.
Health Benefits of Fenugreek: Breast Milk
Reduces Cholesterol - Fenugreek contains saponins
that help reduce the bodys absorption of cholesterol
from fatty foods. Some studies also indicate saponins to
have a role to play in reducing the bodys production of

cholesterol, especially the LDL levels. For example,

Reddy and Srinivasan from the Central Food
Technological Research Institute, CSIR, Mysore, India,
found that fenugreek helped regress existing
cholesterol gallstones in mice. Further, they claimed
that fenugreek could significantly reduce cholesterol
concentration.
Prevents Diabetes - An unusual amino acid (4HO-Ile),
so far found only in fenugreek, has possible antidiabetic properties such as enhancing insulin secretion
under hyperglycemic conditions, and increasing insulin
sensitivity. Iranian researchers from Qom University of
Medical Science suggest the potential of 4HO-Ile as an
adjunct to DIABETES TREATMENT for type 1 as well as
type 2 diabetes.
Health Benefits of Fenugreek: Diabetes
Protects from Cancer - Studies have shown that the
fibers in fenugreek help prevent certain cancers. For
example, researchers at Rajiv Gandhi Center for
Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram, found that
fenugreek has estrogenic effects and could be a
possible alternative to hormone replacement therapy
(HRT). Other studies have shown that saponins and
mucilage in fenugreek bind to toxins in the food and
flush them out, thus protecting the mucus membrane
of the colon from cancers.
Health Benefits of Fenugreek: Cancer
Maintains healthy Testosterone Levels - An Australian
study reported significant positive effect of fenugreek
on physiological aspects of male libido and also found

that it may assist to maintain normal healthy

testosterone levels. The study recruited 60 healthy
males aged between 25 and 52, without erectile
dysfunction and randomized to 2 tablets per day of
600mg Testofen (Fenugreek extract and mineral
formulation) or placebo for 6 weeks. The researchers
found that Testofen significantly increased sexual
arousal and orgasm in the study men.
Health Benefits of Fenugreek: Maintains Testosterone
Levels
Aids Digestion - Fenugreek is said to be an effective
heartburn or acid reflux remedy because the mucilage
in fenugreek seeds assists in soothing gastrointestinal
inflammation, and coating the stomach and intestinal
lining. According to a study published in the journal
Phytotherapy Research, a 2-week intake of a fenugreek
fiber product taken 30 minutes before two meals /day,
by subjects with frequent heartburn, diminished
heartburn severity. The researchers found that the
effects were similar to that of ranitidine at 75mg, twice
a day.

NAME IN OTHER LANGUAGE :

English Name Fenugreek
Hindi Name Methi
Sanskrit Name Methika

CULTIVATE & MAINTAIN :

Botanical name of fenugreek is Trigonella foenumgraecum. In Hindi, it is known as Methi and in Tamil, it
is Venthayam. Fenugreek crop is commercially
cultivated for its seeds, which are used as condiments
and as a flavoring agent for flavoring food preparations.
Largest production center of fenugreek in India is
Rajasthan with more than 80% area under fenugreek
cultivation. Other major production centers of
fenugreek in India are Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
Climatic Requirements
Ideal climatic conditions for fenugreek cultivation are
frost-free, moderately cool climate and clear sky
throughout its growth. Though fenugreek plant can
tolerate frost during its active vegetative phase, it
becomes vulnerable to frost damage at the flowering
and early grain formation stages.

USES :
Fenugreek is used as an herb (dried or fresh leaves),
spice (seeds), and vegetable (fresh leaves, sprouts, and
microgreens). Sotolon is the chemical responsible for
fenugreek's distinctive sweet smell. Cuboid-shaped,
yellow- to amber-colored fenugreek seeds are
frequently encountered in the cuisines of the Indian
Subcontinent, used both whole and powdered in the

preparation of pickles, vegetable dishes, daals, and

spice mixes such as panch phoron and sambar powder.
They are often roasted to reduce bitterness and
enhance flavor. In Malayalam it is known as "Uluva" .
Fresh fenugreek leaves are an ingredient in some Indian
curries. Sprouted seeds and microgreens are used in
salads. When harvested as microgreens, fenugreek is
known as samudra methi in Maharashtra, especially in
and around Mumbai, where it is often grown near the
sea in the sandy tracts, hence the name samudra,
"ocean" in Sanskrit.[8] Samudra methi is also grown in
dry river beds in the Gangetic plains. When sold as a
vegetable in India, the young plants are harvested with
their roots still attached and sold in small bundles in
the markets and bazaars. Any remaining soil is washed
off to extend their shelf life.

Bridal henna nights are a popular tradition in North
Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the
Near East and South Asia.
Algeria
In Algeria, the bride's mother-in-law traditionally
presents her with jewelry and paints the henna on her
hands.
India
In India, As a part of Hindu and Sikh weddings, henna is
applied during wedding ceremonies. Traditionally it is
thought that the darker the henna on the bride's hand,
the more intensely her husband will love her. It is an
important part of many Hindu festivals (such as Karva
Chauth and Diwali), as well as during Eid. It is a
common practice among Indians, particularly elderly
ones, to dye their hair using Henna.
Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, prenuptial Henna nights are common.
Traditionally the brides hands are painted with henna
by one of her female relatives, the belief being that the

relative must be happily married or else she will bring

bad luck to the bride.[22]
Pakistan and Bangladesh
In Pakistan, henna is used on hands and feet by brides
before their wedding, and by many women for Eid alFitr and Eid al-Adha. Often the (women) friends and
relatives of groom design or choose the design for the
hands and feet of bride. It is also used by men to color
their hair. As well as Bangladesh.

CULTIVATE & MAINTAIN :

The henna plant is native to northern Africa, western
and southern Asia, and northern Australasia, in semiarid zones and tropical areas. It produces the most dye
when grown in temperatures between 35 and 45 C (95
and 113 F). During the onset of precipitation intervals,
the plant grows rapidly, putting out new shoots. Growth
subsequently slows. The leaves gradually yellow and
fall during prolonged dry or cool intervals. It does not
thrive where minimum temperatures are below 11 C
(52 F). Temperatures below 5 C (41 F) will kill the
henna plant.

USES :
Henna has been used since the Bronze Age to dye skin
(including body art), hair, fingernails, leather, silk and

wool. In several parts of the world it is traditionally used

in various festivals and celebrations. There is mention
of henna as a hair dye in Indian court records around
400CE, in Rome during the Roman Empire, and in Spain
during Convivencia. It was listed in the medical texts of
the Ebers Papyrus (16th c BCE Egypt) and by Ibn
Qayyim al-Jawziyya (14th c CE (Syria and Egypt) as a
medicinal herb. In Morocco, wool is dyed and
ornamented with henna, as are drumheads and other
leather goods.
An artist applying Mehndi on a palm.
Muslims also use henna as a dye for their hair and for
the beards of males--following the tradition of their
Prophet Muhammad, who used to dye his beard with
henna. It's considered a "sunnah" and akin to
something fortunate/good. In one narration by him, he
encouraged Muslim women to dye their nails with
henna so their hands can be distinguished as feminine
& from the hands of a male. Hence you will see this
tradition greatly in the Middle East and Africa where
women apply henna to their finger and toe nails, as
well as their hands[citation needed].
'Mehndi is the application of henna as a temporary form
of skin decoration in India. The word mehndi is derived
from the Sanskrit word mendhik. The use of mehndi
and turmeric is described in the earliest Vedic ritual
books. Haldi(Staining oneself with turmeric paste) as
well as mehndi are important Vedic customs as a
symbolic representation of the Outer and the Inner
Sun[citation needed]. Vedic customs are meant to
awaken the "inner light" and so the gold of the inner

Sun has an important symbolic function[citation

needed].
Traditional mehndi designs draw the sun on the palm,
which in this context represents the mind. Mehndi
decorations became fashionable in the West in the late
1990s, where they are sometimes called henna tattoos.
Henna is typically applied during special occasions like
weddings and Hindu festivals like Karva Chauth, Diwali,
Bhaidooj and Teej. In some Hindu festivals, every
woman tries to have Henna done on her hands and
feet. It is usually drawn on the palms and feet, where
the color will be darkest because the skin contains
higher levels of keratin which binds temporarily to
lawsone, the colorant of henna. Henna was originally
used as a form of decoration mainly for brides.
Various uses have been reported for different parts of
the Henna plant :
Root : Leprosy, skin diseases, amenorrhoea,
dysmenorrhoea and premature greying of hair
Leaves : Diuretic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, liver
tonic, haematinic, wound, ulcers, cough, bronchitis,
burning sensation, diarrhoea, dysentery, leprosy,

SARPAGANDHA ( RAUVOLFIA
SERPENTINA)

Rauvolfia serpentina, or Indian snakeroot or

sarpagandha, is a species of flowering plant in the
family Apocynaceae. It is native to the Indian
Subcontinent and East Asia (from India to Indonesia).
Common English names : Devil-pepper, Snake-root.

MEDICINE VALUE :
he plant is known for curing various disorders because
of the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids,
glycosides, phlobatannins, phenols, resins, saponins,
tannins and terpenes.
The extract of the plant has also been used for
millennia in India Alexander the Great administered
this plant to cure his general Ptolemy I Soter of a
poisoned arrow. It was reported that Mahatma Gandhi
took it as a tranquilizer during his lifetime.[8] It has
been used for millennia to treat insect stings and the
bites of venomous reptiles. A compound which it
contains called reserpine, was used in an attempt to
treat high blood pressure and mental disorders
including schizophrenia, and had a brief period of
popularity for that purpose in the West from 1954 to

1957. R. serpentina is also known for its antimicrobial,

antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative,
antidiuretic and anticholinergic activities.

NAME IN OTHER LANGUAGE :

English Name Rauvolfia Serpentina
Hindi Name Sarpagandha

LOCATION :
Rauvolfia serpentina grows in moist tropical forests of
the Pacific, South America, Asia and Africa.
(Magic and Medicine of Plants. 1993).

CULTIVATE & MAINTAIN :

By seeds : By seeds Seed germination in Rauwolfia is
highly variable. It is reported to vary from 5 to 30
percent. The ripe seeds collected from the beginning of
June to the end of October retain their viability for 6
months. Direct sowing of the seeds in the field has not
found successful and hence seedlings are raised in
nursery. The nursery is preferably located in shaded
area and kept moist throughout the germination period.
Seedlings are ready by mid-July for transplanting. seeds

By Root Cutting : By Root Cutting Nearly 5 cm long root

cutting are planted during spring season closely in
nursery beds. The beds are kept moist through
watering. The cuttings begin to sprout within 3 weeks.
These can be planted in field during rainy season after
8 to 10 cm rains are received. The seedlings are
transplanted at 45 cm row to row and 30 cm plant to
plant distance. Root cutting method of propagation

By stem cuttings : By stem cuttings Hard wooded stem

cutting measuring 15 to 22 cm are closely planted
during June in the nursery beds where continuous
moisture is maintained. After sprouting and giving out
roots, these plants are transplanted in the main field at
given spacing. Plant grown through stem cutting
method

By Root Stumps : By Root Stumps About 5 cm of roots,

intact with a portion of stem above the collar, are
directly transplanted in the field having irrigation
facilities. This method gives about 90-95% success ,
sometimes even 100%. Such plants transplanted in
May-July into irrigated fields and becomes well
established by the end of September. Root stumps
mode of propagation

Manure and Fertilizers : Manure and Fertilizers The use

of organic manure , leaf mould and compost has been
recommended to increase the quantity of nutrients in

the soil and improve the damage. The plant respond

better to chemical fertilizers than to organic manures.
Nitrogenous and phosphate containing fertilizers have
found to induce more vegetative growth when used in
combination with organic manure. Organic manures
like, Farm Yard Manure (FYM), Vermi-Compost, Green
Manure etc. may be used as per requirement of the
species. To prevent diseases, bio-pesticides could be
prepared from Neem Chitrakmool, Dhatura, Cow's
urine etc. Rauwolfia grown on un manured land
Rauwolfia grown on fertilized land

Interculture : Interculture Rauwolfia, if grown in areas

which receive rainfall of 150 cm or above well
distributed throughout the growing season could be
irrigated once a month. It need regular irrigation where
temperature rise high combined with low rain fall
during rainy season. It is suggested that 15 to 16
irrigations, amounts to irrigation at 20 days interval in
summer and at 30 days interval in winter. In order to
maintain the satisfactory development of roots about 2
weeding are necessary during the monsoon and one
hoeing at the end of the growing season(December).
Matured rauwolfia after proper irrigation

Pests and Management : Pests and Management Root

knots appear as galls of various sizes. this could be
observed by stunted growth of plant, etiolation and
decrease in leaf size in arial portion. Application of 3G
Carbofuran and G. Phorate will help to control them. A

pyralid caterpillar(Glyphodes vertumnalis) causes

appreciable damage to the leaves. They could be
controlled by spraying 0.2% Roger. Cockchafer
grubs(Anomala polita) attack the seedling about 2cm
below the hypocotyl, resulting in their drying up. To
control the grubs , mix phosphate with the soil at the
time of nursery preparation.

Diseases and Control : Diseases and Control Leaf- spots

caused by Cercospora raowolfiae results in dark brown
spots and defoliation. To control this disease Dithane Z78 or Dithane M-45 should be sprayed in early June.
Afternaria tenuis attacks the leaves, resulting in minute
brownish or dark- coloured circular spots. For the
prevention the crop should be sprayed with 30g of
Blitox in 10lt of water. Mosaic is a common disease of
this crop , could be avoided by strict selection of
seedlings at nursery stage.

HARVESTING/ POST HARVESTING : HARVESTING/ POST

HARVESTING Root yields at different age and season
have showed that 18 months duration crop produce
maximum root yield. The harvesting period coincides
with the shedding of leaves during early autumn
season next year. At this stage, the roots contain
maximum concentration of total alkaloids. At harvest
the root may be found to go up to 40 cm deep in the
soil. After digging the roots are cleaned, washed and
cut into 12 to 15 cm pieces for convenience in drying
and storage. The dry roots possess up to 8-10 per cent

of moisture. The dried roots are stored in polythene

lined gunny bags in cool dry place to protect it from
mould. Harvested roots of serpentine

USES:
Indian snakeroot is a plant. The root is used to make
medicine.
Indian snakeroot is used for mild high blood pressure,
nervousness, trouble sleeping (insomnia), and mental
disorders such as agitated psychosis and insanity.
Indian snakeroot is also used for snake and reptile
bites, fever, constipation, feverish intestinal diseases,
liver ailments, achy joints (rheumatism), fluid retention
(edema), epilepsy, and as a tonic for general debilities.
One of the chemicals in Indian snakeroot is the same as
a prescription drug called reserpine. Reserpine is used
to treat mild to moderate hypertension, schizophrenia,
and some symptoms of poor circulation.
