SCOPE:
This procedure describes the method for Penetrant Testing of materials and welds, for structure
erection and fabrication work of MSQ (EPCC-1) up gradation Project, IOCL Panipat.

3.1

GENERAL
Penetrant Testing shall be applied to detect discontinuities that are open to the surface of nonferrous
and other materials. Typical defects which are detectable by this method are surface cracks, porosity,
laminations, seams, laps etc.

3.2

Prior to examination, surface to be checked visually and adjacent area shall be cleaned, to allow the
pentrant to enter the discontinuities.

4.1

QUALIFICATION OF PERSONNEL
Individuals performing penetrant examination shall be qualified ASNT level-II in accordance with
SNT-TC-1A or equivalent.

4.2 Trained Person may perform the testing under Level II qualified persons instruction and supervision.
5.0

Materials

5.1

All DP materials such as Penetrant, Developer and Cleaner shall be from the following reputed
manufacturers. Magnaflux, P Met, Flaw check & Pradeep metal brands are acceptable.

5.2

Batch certificates shall be submitted for review prior to use.

6.0

PROCEDURE

6.1

Surface preparation

The surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at least 1 shall be clean & dry, free from
dirt, oil, grease, loose rust, paint ,welding flux, spatter and other extraneous matter that obscure
surface openings or otherwise interfere with the examination.

6.2

Temperature
Surface temperature shall be between 50 degree F (10 deg. C) to 125 Deg. F (52 Deg .C)

6.3

Penetrant application
Solvent removable type visible liquid penetrant (red in colour) shall be applied uniformly by
pressurized container attached with spray nozzle over the required surface area / brush

6.4

Dwell time (penetration time) shall be 10 minutes (min) or as specified by manufacturer but care shall
be taken so that penetrant does not get dried up.

6.5

Removal of excess Penetrant


After the specified dwell time penetrant shall be removed by repeated wiping with lint free material or
absorbent paper, till the traces of penetrant has been removed. Care shall be taken to minimize
removal of penetrant from discontinuities. Remaining traces can be removed by lightly wiping the
surface with damped cloth or absorbent paper moistened with cleaner. (Surface flushing with solvent
is prohibited.)

6.6

Developing
Only wet developer in pressurized container with spray nozzle should be used. It shall be applied
immediately after removal of excess penetrant from the surface. Avoid excess coating or insufficient
coating conditions, which might impair the effectiveness of the test. Before use, stir the chemical
thoroughly.

7.0

INTERPRETATION

7.1

Interpretation shall be done between 5 to 30 minutes after the developer coating becomes dry.

7.2

Acceptance standard shall be as per ASME B 31.3 / Contract specification. Any defect found shall be
repaired either by grinding, chipping or re-welding if required or re test to be done with the above
procedure in defective area.

8.0

POST CLEANING
After the completion of interpretation, the area shall be cleaned thoroughly by cotton waste so that no
trace of DPT material left is left out.

9.0

DOCUMENTATION
The test results shall be recorded in Format No. LT/MSQ/DPT/016

10.

SAFETY
All safety precautions shall be taken as per HSE requirements of the project.
