Subject:
Centrifugal Pump Experiment Technical Memo

Summary:
The Armfield FM51 was used for performing the experiment. The efficiency
and power curves were obtained. Similarity law was employed for different diameter
pump setting. System head and pump operating point were plotted. Effect of
cavitation was found by comparing suction head.
Discussion:
The experiment can be divided by four parts. First part is to characterize
pump curve by power, efficiency and total head against flow rate. Second part is to
utilize similarity law to this system. Third part is to determine operating point from
system head and pump head curve. Last part is to find the effect of cavitation. The
pump settings were set to 100%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%. The data were taken by
every 10% decrease of the maximum pump flow rate. Therefore, efficiency and total
head and power against flow rate can be plotted. By power coefficient, flow
coefficient and head coefficient, there was a similarity between different diameter
pump system. From the total head against flow rate curve, the interception of pump
head and system head is the operating point in the situation. The cavitation is due
to a combination of high fluid pressure, high fluid flow rate, low ambient pressure
and low inlet head. The cavitation can be indicated from suction head.
