Poultry farming is the raising of domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese for the purpose
of farming meat or eggs for food. Poultry are farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous. More
than 50 billion chickens are raised annually as a source of food, for both ; their meat and their eggs.[1] Chickens raised
for eggs are usually called layers while chickens raised for meat are often called broilers.

Poultry farming means raising various types of domestic birds commercially for the
purpose of meat, eggs and feather production. The most common and widely raised
poultry birds are chicken. About 5k million chickens are being raised every year as a
source of food (both meat and eggs of chicken). The chickens which are raised for eggs
are called layer chicken, and the chickens which are raised for their meat production are
called broiler chickens. The UK and USA consume more meat and eggs of chicken than
other countries of the world. On an average the UK alone consumes more than 29
million chicken eggs everyday. However, in a word commercial poultry farming is very
necessary to meet up the demand of animal nutrition (eggs and meat). Commercial
poultry farming is also very profitable. And commercial poultry farming business is one
of the traditional business ventures.
Broiler poultry birds are raised for commercial meat production. They convert foods to
meat within a very short period of time. They have a good feed to meat converting
ratio. So quality feeding is very important for maintaining a profitable broiler poultry
farming business. Broilers require more energy and protein in their food. The main
difference between layer poultry feed and broiler poultry feed is that broiler poultry
needs more nutrient ingredients than layer poultry.
Adequate amount of protein is also very important. Broilers are very fast growing birds,
and they require more protein enriched food than layer poultry. And adding adequate
amount of protein to broiler poultry feed is the most important and expensive part of
broiler poultry feed. You can add both animal and vegetable protein in their food. Fish
meal, meat meal, meat, milk, liver, dried animal blood etc. are great source of animal
protein. Various types of corn, vegetables, grains etc. provide required protein for the
poultry birds.
Also ensure the availability of sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals in their food.
Add adequate amount of required minerals and Vitamins in their food.
Adequate amount of clean and fresh drinking water is very important for poultry. Usually
broiler poultry birds drink more water than layer poultry. So along with quality poultry
feed, always ensure availability of adequate amount of fresh and clean drinking water
according to their demand.

Broiler poultry farming is a lucrative business. Generally highly meat productive birds or
poultry breeds are called broiler poultry. But broiler chicken is a special species of
poultry, which is a great secret. Only four countries of the world knows about this secret
and they supply and maintain all the demand of broiler chickens. Broilers are like other
common poultry birds. But this broiler is made in a scientific way for producing more
meat in a short time. Basically, broilers are only for meat production.
Housing
The broiler house should placed east-west direction. Ventilation system must be well
accompanied. The regular distance from one house to another house will be 11-12
meters (35-40 feet). The house should be cleaned well before bringing the chick to the
farm. The insects like lice, mosquito, etuli should run off with blow lamp. Heating system
of the space of baby chicken should observed well 48 hours before the chick reach the
farm. The temperature of the house should 350. 7 squire inch of space per chick is
required. Always keep a moderate number of chick, it will keep the chicken healthy.
Temperature
Temperature is very important in broiler poultry farming. You should check the
temperature of the broiler chicken house 48 hours before bringing the chick to the farm.
For the first week the temperature of the rood would be 350c and it will reduce at the
rate 2.80c per week, it mostly depend on the outside temperature. The litter of the
chicken would be between 5-6 inch depth. If possible keep some straw in the chicken
bed. The chicken bed should be cleaned twice a week with spade. If the condition of the
bed is very wet then you can use lime because it absorbs the ammonia gas.
Marketing
There is no problem about the marketing of broiler chicken. It has a great demand
throughout the world. Almost all people like to consume it. So, the farmer should not
take any tension about the marketing of broiler chicken.

Broilers are raised for commercial meat production and they gain maturity within a very
short period of time. They are genetically improved and have a great meat production
efficiency. But for proper growth and maximum production from your birds, you have to
make a suitable house for them and ensure good environment. Modern fast growing
broilers are more dependent on suitable environmental conditions than any other
poultry birds. So suitable broiler poultry housing is very important for commercial and
profitable production.
