MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

Name: CJ Williams
PART A: Describe how students could create and publish an original movie, audio file, podcast, or vodcast in order to achieve
required learning standards. Challenge: For an A provide an idea where the learning activity reaches a LoTi level 4a or
above. To do this you will have to design a project where students engage in higher-order thinking and publish their work to an
audience that will use or care about the results. Broad feedback for their work is also a great way to boost interest and
performance.
Grade Level: 9th
Content Area: Algebra
Technology Used (check all that apply): Movie Audio Podcast Vodcast Other: (list)

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: Multiple topics will be addressed due to the nature of this assignment

Brief Description of Learning Experience:

In this assignment, students will be asked to research an application of mathematics in the real world that they find most
interesting. Because of the variety of interests in the classroom, students could choose anything from calculus in space
travel to architecture using geometry. With their research, students will create a video using Movie Maker on the
computers in the computer lab, which we will visit during multiple class days. The video will include still images, video
clips, and music that help explain their interests in the chosen field. Once finished, students will present their work to
their class. Also, I will assist them in publishing their work to the class YouTube account.

This assignment should take around 2 weeks to complete. There will be 3 class days to work on the project at school.
Students are expected to gather the necessary resources prior to coming to class. The expected audience is the fellow
classmates and later, through the blog, parents and others outside the classroom. The teacher will provide feedback to the
students assessing the soundness of their mathematical reasoning and quality of their video.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why?
This lesson could reach a LoTi level 4 or 5 because students are creating and producing an original product for an
audience in and beyond the classroom. This is the integration level of LoTi where students are engaged in higher-order
thinking skills.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could the project be
completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are
going to be used in the learning experience?

Multimedia authoring tools are vital to this project because the nature of this project is to create, present, and share a
video. Without video creation and editing tools, this project would lose much of its interesting and exciting feel. Also, I
believe creating a video will really inspire students to put their best work forward. Students can even use video cameras
to capture their own videos and images to provide to their product.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether in part or whole),
include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet safety and student
privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how youd minimize risks to
students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and follow school districts Internet Safety/Use Policy.

Throughout this assignment, it will be stressed that students must refrain from including any personal information on
any of their products or during any of the sharing process. No videos or pictures of themselves or others will be allowed
to be included in their final product.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity:
Videos are an excellent tool to engage students in the learning process and create an educational product
