Penicillin G
Physical Properties:
The state of matter is solid. Its color is amorphous white powder. The melting point of
Penicillin G is at 214-217 C, and it is slightly soluble in water (210 mg/L). The molecular
weight is 334.39 g/mol. (2)
Chemical Properties:
Penicillin usually inactivated in the presence of heat, alkaline or acid pH, oxidising
agents, alcohols, glycols, and metal ions such as copper, mercury, or zinc. In presently
available penicillin, cleavage at any time in the penicillin nucleus, including the beta-lactam
ring, results in total loss of antibacterial activity. The main reason of inactivation of penicillin
is hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring. The course of hydrolysis and nature of the degradation
products can vary and most affected by pH: saturated aqueous solution in 5-7.5 (2)
Purpose to use:
Penicillin G benzathine is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It might
also be used to prevent specific bacterial infections (such as rheumatic fever).
This medication is a long-acting penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the development
of bacteria. Penicillin g potassium is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by disturbing with the

formation of the bacteria's cell wall while it is developing. Therefore, it weakens the cell wall
and destroys the bacteria. (3)
How to use:
Penicillin g sodium is common as an injection at the office of specialist, healing
facility, or health center. Before using penicillin g sodium, the specialist will show the
instructions. Make sure to know how to use penicillin g sodium and follow the techniques
when using this medicine. If there is any problem, contacting to the health center. Penicillin g
sodium is injected into a muscle. It should not be injected into or close to a vein. Also, it has
the best performance if it is given at the same time every day. Use it as quick as possible,
when missing this medicine in some day. If it is almost the time for next medicine, skip the
missed one and turn to the usual medicine schedule. However, do not use two of this
medicine at once. (3)
Effect of Probenecid on Cerebrospinal Fluid Concentrations of Penicillin and
Cephalosporin Derivatives
Probenecid may elevate the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentration of penicillin G by
inhibiting the excretion of organic acids from CSF. Penicillin concentrations were determined
in rabbits under steady-state conditions before and after intravenous probenecid
administration. Probenecid may demonstrate useful in specific bacterial infections where high
CSF antibiotic levels are important. (4)
Important safety information:
The women who become pregnant should contact to a specialist before using
penicillin g sodium. They should understand the advantages and dangers for the safety of
their infants because it is usually found in breast milk. (5)
