III. Students:
a. 9 girls, 8 boys
IV. Setting:
a. Kindergarten classroom at The Learning Gate
b. Ages: 5-6 years old classroom, 17 students. 1 head teacher, 1 teacher aid
V. Pre-Observation:
a. I didnt really know what to expect when I found out that I had to do a child study
observation. I decided to do some research to get an idea of what to look for when
Im inside the classroom. I found an article that explained what to observe when
youre looking at childs behavior. Childrens behavior can change over time or
drastically, but its our job as teaching professionals to keep them on the right
track. After reading that, I felt a little more confident about doing this
observation.
VI. Analysis:
a. I have already spoken to Mrs. Sharon about my child study observation and I was
going to choose. She agreed that this was an excellent choice as this child has a
few behavioral problems. She started the morning meeting with the children and
as she was in the middle of morning meeting, the child decided to talk to his
friends. Mrs. Sharon asked the child to quiet down and he decided he didnt want
to listen. The class was already getting distracted so the teacher aid removed the
child from morning meeting so he can sit next to her. I was observing the child
and saw how angry he was beginning to get. He then proceeded to get up and
throw the chair because he wasnt sitting next to his friends. Mrs. Sharon
immediately removed him from the classroom and brought him to the directors
office. The childs parents were called and had to come pick up the child.
VII. Recommendations:
a. At first, I was a little confused on how removing the child would make the
situations better. I say this because by removing the child, they are making them
feel alienated and that wont make the situation any better. The children have all
seen him be removed from the classroom. Instead, I believe that the child should
have come back to morning meeting after the teacher aid had spoken to him. I
also would have explained to the child that when morning meeting was over, he
could go and speak to his friends. Doing this would have shown the kid that if you
sit quietly for a little bit longer than you will be able to speak to your friends after
morning meeting. I also would have shown the child his sticker chart and show
important in schools. They can assist the teachers with how to deal with the
children in certain situations. Maybe if the school had a child study team then that
would help the boy with his behavioral problem and what they can do to keep him
showing great behavior skills. The child didnt quite learn from this happening
when he was removed, maybe next time they will have a different solution to help
him.
