Evidence: Life from a wheelchair
About 1 in every 100 people is handicapped and uses a wheelchair. Therefore,

there are about 80 million people in wheelchairs in the world. That is twice the
population of Colombia! But what is it like to live in a wheelchair?

After you watch the video answer the following questions. Use any voice recording
software to record your answers and send the file as evidence.
Use mixed conditional sentences (at least 4 examples), the idioms, vocabulary and
ideas about flexibility and adaptability studied in this learning activity (at least 8
words from the vocabulary). Remember to use connectors and punctuation.
What does Ashley do for a living?
Ashly sings at certain times of the day and has to leave her bedroom earlier
than usual.
How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal
with it?
She finds it difficult to write fast and for the extreme weather it takes Ashley
a few minutes more to go to classes in the snow. She has to deal with the
guys who look at her with fear, but she lets go with the flow.
What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain
activities?
Her attitude is positive in front of life. She feels able to swim and she leaves
people high and dry, because many people believe that she cant do it.
She feels able to transfer to her bed. If she didnt have that positive attitude
toward life, she would have failed in all the situations that come up daily.
She feels incapacitated to do certain activities like running, she doesnt
know what that feeling is.
She would want to know what it feels like to walk or run. If she hadnt been
lucky enough to have her parents by her side, she wouldnt have been able
to learn to do many other things.
How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the
answer).
My life would be completely different if I didnt have my body functioning

normally, since in many aspects of life we have to use our limbs and senses
to do different daily activities. But I think that many limitations are in our
mind, we always have the open mind to learn new things, to adapt to the
changes and that nothing affects our determination to get ahead.
How do you react when you have to interact with a handicapped person?
My attitude is totally normal towards her, but at the same time it is also of
service, since that person may need my help at any time
How can you contribute to improve the life of handicapped people?
I can contribute to improving the lives of people with disabilities, with my

service in the things that I may need.
I can contribute with my emotional support, it is important that you find ways
to enjoy your own life and feel that you can make a significant contribution to
the world around you despite your disability.

Aproximadamente 1 de cada 100 personas es discapacitado y utiliza una silla de

ruedas. Por lo tanto, hay alrededor de 80 millones de personas en sillas de ruedas
en el mundo. Eso es el doble de la poblacin de Colombia! Pero, cmo es vivir

Qu hace Ashley para ganarse la vida?

Ashly canta a ciertas horas del da y tiene que salir de su dormitorio ms
temprano de lo normal.
Cmo afecta su condicin a sus actividades cotidianas y cmo lidia con

ellas?
A ella se le dificulta escribir rpido y por el clima extremo a Ashley le toma

unos minutos de ms ir a clases por la nieve. Ella tiene que lidiar con los
chicos que la miran con miedo, pero ella deja que todo fluya.
Cul es su actitud hacia la vida? Se siente incapacitada de ciertas

actividades?
Su actitud es positiva frente a la vida .Ella se siente capacitada para nadar,

ella deja a las personas high and dry, porque muchas personas creen que
ella no lo puede hacer.
Ella se siente capacitada para transferirse hacia su cama. Si ella no tuviera
esa actitud positiva frente a la vida, hubiera fracasado en todas las
situaciones que se le presentan a diario.
Ella se siente incapacitada para hacer ciertas actividades como correr, ella
no sabe cul es esa sensacin. Ella deseara saber que se siente caminar o
correr. Si ella no hubiera tenido la suerte de tener a sus padres a su lado,
no hubiera podido aprender a hacer muchas otras cosas.
Cmo sera de diferente tu vida si estuvieras discapacitado y tuvieras que

usar una silla de ruedas? Qu sera diferente para usted? (Use
condicionales mixtos en la respuesta).
Mi vida sera completamente diferente si no tuviera en normal

funcionamiento mi cuerpo, ya que en muchos aspectos de la vida tenemos
que utilizar nuestras extremidades y sentidos para hacer diferentes
actividades diarias. Pero creo que muchas limitaciones estn en nuestra
mente, tenemos que tener siempre la mente abierta a aprender cosas
nuevas, adaptarnos a los cambios y que nada afecte nuestra determinacin
de salir adelante.
Cmo reaccionas cuando tienes que interactuar con una persona

discapacitada?
Mi actitud es totalmente normal hacia ella, pero a la vez tambin es de
servicio, ya que esa persona puede necesitar de mi ayuda en cualquier
momento.
Cmo puede contribuir a mejorar la vida de las personas con

discapacidad?
Yo puedo contribuir a mejorar la vida de personas con discapacidad, con mi

servicio en las cosas que pueda necesitar. Puedo aportar con mi apoyo
emocional, es importante que encuentre maneras de disfrutar su propia vida
y sentir que puede realizar una contribucin significativa al mundo que le
rodea a pesar de su discapacidad.
