LESSON PLAN IN BASIC CALCULUS

Content: Basic concepts of Limit and Continuity of a function

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
A. Illustrate the limit of a function using a table of values and the graph of the
function.

B. Distinguish between f(x) and f( c) .

C. Illustrate the limit laws, and
D. Apply the limit laws in evaluating the limit of algebraic functions ( polynomial, ,
rational, and radical ).

II. Learning Content/ Subject Matter:

a. Subject Matter:
Limit and continuity

b. References :

d. Strategy:

Discussion Method

III. Activities/ Procedures

a. Preliminary/ Activity

Prayer
Checking of attendance
Motivation
Ask the students to answer the given activity.

Activity 1. Almost there 3 2

1
Consider the following function;
3 2
f(x)=
1

1. What is the (implied) domain of f?

2. As you should have seen in (1) , f(x) when x=1. So ,it is nonsense to ask
what is f(1), right?
3. Now , take a look at this table . it shows the values of f(x) when the
values for x are very close to 1. Using calculator , complete the table
X f(x) x f(x)
1.5 2.25 0.5
1.1 1.21 0.9
1.01 1.0201 0.99
1.001 1.002001 0.999
1.0001 1.00020001 0.9999
1.00001 1.000020001 0.99999
4. Notice anything? Does it seem that the function values closer and
closer to a certain value as the values for the independent variable
get closer and closer to 1?

b. Lesson Proper

Limit Theorems
IV. Evaluation

Evaluate if the indicated limits exist:

lim( 5 4 3 3 +7+5) 2 lim 2 2
1. 3. 2
0 2 4

3
lim lim 7 2
2. 3 2 4. 3
3 1

IV. Assignment:

Evaluate if the indicated limit exists.

lim 2 +43 lim
1. 1 4
3. 1
2 4 + 3
lim lim 2 2
2. 4.
