Speech Importance of Engli̇sh
In todays global world, the importance of English cannot be denied and ignored since English is the
most common language spoken everywhere. With the help of developing technology, English has been
playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my
opinion, is the most important arena where English is needed.
Particularly, as a developing country, Turkey needs to make use of this world-wide spoken language in
order to prove its international power. This can merely be based on the efficiency of tertiary education.
Consequently, English should be the medium of instruction at universities in Turkey for the following
three reasons: finding a high-quality job, communicating with the international world, and accessing
scientific sources in the students major field.
The first reason for why English should be the medium of instruction at universities in Turkey is that it
helps students find a high quality jobs for students to find. In business life, the most important
common language is obviously English. In addition to this, especially, high-quality jobs need good
understanding ability and speaking in English. Therefore, companies can easily open out to other
countries, and these companies generally employ graduates whose English is fluent and orderly. For
example, the student who is graduated from a university which takes
English as a major language will find a better or high-quality job than other students who dont know
English adequately. In other words, the student who knows English is able to be more efficient in his
job because he can use the information from foreign sources and web sites. He can prepare his
assigments and tasks with the help of these information.
Therefore, undoubtedly, his managers would like his effort or prepared projects. In addition, many
high-quality jobs are related with international communication and world-wide data sharing.
University graduates who are in a international company and business are needed to communicate with
foreign workers. For instance, if their managers want them to share the companys data, they are
expected to know English.
Moreover, they will even have to go business trip for their company. Absolutely, all of these depend
on speaking English;as a result, new graduates have to know English in order to get a high-quality job,
and the others, who dont know English, may have lack of communication and be paid less money.
The second and the most important reason, for English to be the medium of instruction in the Turkish
higher education system is that it enables students to communicate with the international world. In
these days, in my opinion, the most important thing for both university students and graduates is to
follow the development in tecnology. For this reason, they have to learn common language. Certainly,
they should not lose their interest on communicating with the world. However, some of the university
students cant obtain English education in their university.
Unfortunately, these people may lose their communication with worldwide subjects and topics. In
short, they will not communicate foreign people. To prevent these people from lacking of speaking
English, universities administration will provide English education to them. In addition, university
students can use some specific hardware and software of computers with their English to communicate
others. For example, the Internet, which, in my opinion, is the largest source in the world, based on
English knowledge and information. Also, most of the softwares such as Windows, Microsoft
Office, Internet Explorer are firstly written in English, and these programs are the basic vital things
for communication over computer. That is to say, even in a little resarch about something, they need
these programs and the Internet to find necessary sources and information.
The last reason for favouring English as the medium of instruction of Turkish universities is that it
faclitates accessing information. All of the students have to do some projects or homeworks which are
related with their field during the university education. In these projects or homeworks, they have to
find some information which is connected with their subject. They find sources from English web sites
and books, but they have to replace these data to their projects.
During these process, if they know English, they will not come across with any difficulty, but if they
dont know, even they may not use these data. As a result, the student who knows English will be more
successful at his/her project. For this reason, to obstruct possible inequity between students,
management of universities should accept English as a second language in order to provide accessing
information to the students. In short, university students need to know English to access information.
All in all, the education in universities should be done with English for three reasons. First, students
who know English are able to find their favourite job related with their field. Second, they can
communicate with others internationally. Third, as a major language in universities, English makes
accessing information easy for students. In my opinion, internationally, people need one common
language. For many years, English has been the common world-wide language, and it will be in the
future. For this reason, if you want to follow trends, new gadgets and technology, modernization of the
developing world, you have to know English whatever age you are in.
IMPORTANCE OF READING NEWSPAPERS
Nulla nuova, buona nuova meaning no news is good news is a famous Italian usage. It may be true in the
ambience of too much news of disturbing nature pouring in from all directions all the time nolens volens. But,
news is sine qua non for active life. None can ignore the milieu in which he lives. Only news keeps us in touch
with the milieu in which we live. It gives us the insight to the dynamics that form the environment around us, it
be in local or regional or national or international level. Keeping doors shut from news renders us deadwood and
leads to isolation from the world around us and ultimately to atrophy.
The main conveyor of news is newspaper. Though there are many other sources of news like magazines and
books in print media, radio and television channels and Internet connections in electronic media, words of
mouth and telephone and wireless communications etc, no other source ever could come near the newspaper in
importance. It is true of the past and the present and it is true of the future also. Neither the advent of the
television nor that of the Internet could affect the importance of the newspaper. The reason for this is the width,
breadth and the depth of the news provided by the newspaper, its low cost and the ease of providing the news at
our leisure and comfort as many times as we desire.
Newspapers are very important in many ways. They give us lots of information about various matters at various
levels that are not available anywhere. Though magazines and books also give lots of information, the scope of
the news there is limited to a few selected topics. Televisions and internet connections while provide news faster
than the newspapers, it cannot have the width, breadth and depth of the newspapers and do not provide the
comfort of the repeated references at our leisure and comfort apart from harming our eyes because of the glare
and being the source of health hazards because of radiations.
People of all profession need newspapers. Engineers, doctors, scientists, professors and other professionals need
them to know the day-to-day developments in their respective fields. Businessmen need newspapers to keep in
touch with the economic and commercial trends in the country and see current share prices. Politicians need
them to read recent political events in the country. Others read newspapers to know how changes around them
affect their life. Students read newspapers to broaden their knowledge and keep abreast of the recent
developments in various fields, be it in politics, economics, science, sports or art and culture. Newspaper is an
important tool of the learning process for students.
Advertisements in newspapers are also very informative and give lots of information about the world around us
and recent trends apart from being very entertaining. The editorials and the articles in the editorial page of the
newspapers are always very analytical and give insight to the news and their background. Reading newspapers
is incomplete sans a glance to the editorials and the articles.
Reading newspapers everyday is must for both students and adults for growth and enlightenment irrespective of
the class or field of their life. For, reading newspaper everyday is highly educational, and an important informal
education in that. One can ignore this important function of the life at own peril.
Ways of improving my English
Today, English is used widely. It has become the most popular language of communication between
countries and in many fields of human endeavor. So it is important that we learn to use English.
Otherwise we will be at a disadvantage.
The only effective way of improving my English is to use it, as often as possible.
In school, the only time when English is used is during English lessons. That certainly is not enough.
So wherever possible I speak English with some friends and teachers who will or can speak English
with me.
Reading book, magazines and newspapers are good ways of improving my English. On the whole they
are grammatically correct. We may speak incorrect English and get away with it. Not so with printed
words, they have to be correct. Through reading, I learned how to use correct English in writing and
speaking, though at times I still speak the broken English that many of us speak here.
Watching television and listening to the radio are two more ways of improving my English. English as
it is spoken by the English, Americans, Malaysians and others are distinctly different.
So I continue to use English, that is, hear, read, speak and write it. Some of my friends only hear and
read it. They can hardly speak or write it, but I will not be like them. I will try my best to master it.
