1 PowerFactory 2018
1.1 Features
PowerFactory 2018 introduces several major features, as listed below and described in the Pow-
erFactory Whats New document. Key highlights include:
New module Probabilistic Analysis, incorporating very powerful capabilities for managing
stochastic parameters based on distribution curves and their correlations
New Distance Protection Reach Colouring in diagrams and a new Short-Circuit Sweep
plot
New Remedial Action Schemes in Contingency Analysis, for flexible and dynamic analysis
of post-fault actions
New Frequency Response Analysis of dynamic models
New Plant and Grid Performance Monitor to support real-time data streaming for RMS
simulations, based on IEEE C37.118
Revised data colouring scheme to provide a better visualisation of data status such as
characteristics and distributions
New PSSSINCAL data import converter
Automatic step size adaptation in the load flow algorithm is now executed per isolated area.
Convergence progress of each area is now independent of other areas. (#18975)
It is now possible to define line loads (ElmLodlvp) for all AC line types, including two- and
single-phase lines. Unbalanced line load definition is also supported.
Voltage dependency of line loads can now be specified in the type. Previously, line loads
were always treated as constant current loads. Now, line loads are considered as constant
power loads if Consider voltage dependency of loads is not selected in the Load Flow
command. This may cause different load flow results compared to previous PowerFactory
versions. See the Technical Reference for further details. More details are available in the
Whats New document. (#18603)
A new HVDC LCC element has been introduced. More details are available in the Whats New
document. (#18605)
Synchronous motor (ElmSym): New improvements have been made to synchronous machines
when operating in motor mode.
Shunt/Filter (ElmShnt):
PWM converter, full-bridge Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) model (ElmVsc): The full-
bridge MMC is now supported in all calculation types. More details are available in the Whats
New document. (#18623)
PWM converter, MMC model (ElmVsc/ElmVscmono): A new, more detailed MMC model (Ag-
gregate Arm Model) has been implemented for EMT simulations. The model includes an equiv-
alent capacitor per arm and allows the analysis of issues related to energy balancing between
arms and legs, such as second harmonic circulating currents. More details are available in the
Whats New document. (#18624)
Series reactor (ElmSind): The definition of the zero sequence impedance (for three-phase re-
actors) through the R0/R1 and X0/X1 parameters is now supported. More details are available
in the Whats New document. (#18798)
Multicore cable (TypCabmult): The calculation of the series impedance for the new multicore
cable model considers proximity effects. More details are available in the Whats New document.
(#19596)
Line couplings element and tower type (TypTow, ElmTow): The definition of 2-phase lines is
now available, with support for load flow and short-circuit calculations. (#20657)
Switches which are normally open can now be highlighted by a coloured circle. (#21105)
PowerFactory can now be run in in-memory mode when using a local database. In this mode,
no changes are written to the database. More details are available in the Whats New document.
(#20484)
A new Help button in some error dialogs now provides additional and customisable information
regarding errors. More details are available in the Whats New document. (#20279)
Two new options, Reference system calculation method and Reference, have been introduced
for the dynamic simulation. More details are available in the Whats New document. (#18679;
#15221)
The Calculation of initial conditions is now automated has been removed from the Eigen-
value/Modal Analysis toolbar;
When the Calculation of initial conditions command is opened from the Modal Analysis
command, only the valid calculation settings, RMS Simulation with balanced network rep-
resentation, are selectable;
The Modal Analysis command is now disabled (including in the toolbar) during the execu-
tion of unbalanced dynamic simulations;
Improved user interface for the Modal Analysis Results command;
The state results browser can now also be triggered for individual eigenvalues in the eigen-
value plot and eigenvalue results browser via the context menu; and
The eigenvalue plot now supports a constant damping ratio line.

3 Summary grid indices are now calculated correctly for IEEE 1366 consid- #21175
eration of sustained interruptions. DIG30810
3 Enhanced load shedding algorithm to avoid shedding of loads which were #19390
initially not interrupted, or which have already been restored.

solution algorithm of the AC Optimal Power Flows and State Estimation.
These can now be successfully executed for grids containing DC compo-
nents.
Description ID
3 State Estimation now considers all valid measurements in the calculation, #18688
including those which are at the same measurement location.
Description ID
3 A warning message is now issues for unbalanced networks initialised us- #20729
ing a balanced load flow.
Description ID
- Calculation of Initial Conditions: New option Use maximum step size at #18681
start to start the simulation with the maximum step if Automatic step size
adaptation is being used.
- Introduced option Fast direct interpolation of buffers (delay and movin- #21053
gavg) for more robust handling of buffers with a delay time smaller than
the current integration step.
- Simulation snapshots may now be saved to, and loaded from a file. More #20216
details are available in the Whats New document.
3 The size of the internal buffer is now checked before reading a value. #20345
3 New option to apply the A-stable integration algorithm in ComInc to set all #21256
elements of a composite model to A-stable if one element is A-stable.
Simulation scan:
- Scan module modifications are now taken into account for the simula- #12461
tion following ComInc.
3 Simulation scan: Checks for violations of variables now continue even #18023
if the associated element has been de-energised. DIG25892
Description ID
- Voltage reference for unbalanced network for ScnVolt and ScnFrt is #20298
now available. DIG25982
EMT/RMS Simulation:
- New step size algorithm. More details are available in the Whats New #18680
document.
- Simulation now stops at the exact time defined by the user. #19077
- The integration error used for the adaptive step size algorithms can #19872
now be displayed via ierrgrdadapt and ierremtadapt in the result file.

Description ID
3 Modal Analysis now supports writing of results to MATLAB files, even if #20190
no eigenvalues were found.
- New option introduced for Modal Analysis to report DSL models using #15207
buffers or external functions. DIG18625
Very small and very large eigenvalues can now be optionally omitted
when using the QR/QZ-method of the Modal/Eigenvalue Analysis.
Description ID
3 Invalid command line arguments are now reported on application startup. #12462
Description ID
- The IntGroup dialog now supports license assignment for groups of users. #18450
3 LicenseManager now always starts in server mode when installed with #19611
LicenseComponents.
- Example videos are now available online and are therefore no longer in- #19767
cluded in the PowerFactory installation. The video files may be obtained
as a separate setup package if required.
3 The Upgrade Assistant now warns regarding workspaces which already #18743
contain data.
3 Application update check: Ignored versions are now only considered in #20283
the automatically-executed check at startup. Manual checks always report
a new version (if there is one), independent of these ignore settings.
3 Following installation on a client machine without local license, the Li- #20923
censeManager is no longer shown.
- The Administrator user can now check which system account is logged #21140
on as a PowerFactory user. The information is available in the IntUser DIG30731
object.
