1®. MIgCEIftfiHEOUS AND CONCLUSION:. In connection with this study
the use of paratroops was thoroughly considered and discarded. The use
of beachjumpsr units was also considered in conference with staff
representatives of the Joint Expeditionary Force Commander and their use
ruled, out. The matter of deception is considered most important. Var-
iations in the "pattern" of air and naval gunfire.preparation heretofore
used for amphibious assaults has been requested of the Joint Expedition-
army Force Commander. It is believed that deception measures should be
.directed toward pointing the assault at AMAMI 0 SHIMA, including the
bulk of all Naval Gunfire and Air preparations prior to the actual
commencement of the preliminaries (Minesweeping and Underwater Demo-
litions) of the operation, and that coincidental with the commencement
of these preliminaries a tight screen should be employed sufficient
to prevent any reinforcement from AMAMI 0 SHIMA or other neighboring
islands. The use of UDT!s is important and vital; however, for decep-
tion purposes, UDT*s should wdrk on all beaches on KIKAIGA in addition
to the selected landing beaches. For planning purposes it is estimated
that under the preferred plan Able, the first objective line will not
be secured in less than 10 days and that the island will not be secured
in less than 30 days. In conclusion, it is desired to emphasize that
this is a study merely that its sole purpose is to aid the Landing
Force Commander in the adoption and preparation of his detailed scheme
of maneuver, and to permit advance planning considerations by the
Navy and other supporting forces. Many variations to the plans pre-
sented may be desirable; additional intelligence may indicate radical
changes.
