The Most Prominent Group is the Order of Friars Minor or commonly called the
Franciscans.
Their Official Latin name is the “Ordo Fratrum Minorum”.
This Order is a mendicant Religious order of men tracing their origin to
Francis of Assisi.
They are composed of three separate groups, each being considered a religious order
in its own right. These are the Observants, the Capuchins, and the Conventual
Franciscans.

2. Capuchins
3. Conventual Franciscans
Franciscan brothers are informally called
Friars or the Minorities.
By 1209, there were 12 brothers, and so they approached Pope Innocent III to gain an
approval for their way of life which created the Order of Friars Minor.
The first 15 Franciscans that arrived in the Philippines was in 1577. They are the second
religious order to come to the country.
Upon Arrival, they were temporarily housed by Augustinians in an Augustinian convent
in Intramuros.
On August 2, they blessed their first church dedicated to the “Our Lady of the
Angels”
In the Philippines their activity was tireless; they founded convents, town, and hospitals;
instructed the natives in manual labor and planned streets, bridges, canals,
aqueducts, etc.
The missions of the Franciscans were thus interrupted for a time, but were repeatedly
renewed from the Philippines
