FRANCISCANS: (“The Men in Brown”)

 The Most Prominent Group is the Order of Friars Minor or commonly called the
Franciscans.
 Their Official Latin name is the “Ordo Fratrum Minorum”.
 This Order is a mendicant Religious order of men tracing their origin to
Francis of Assisi.
 They are composed of three separate groups, each being considered a religious order
in its own right. These are the Observants, the Capuchins, and the Conventual
Franciscans.
1. Observants
2. Capuchins
3. Conventual Franciscans
 Franciscan brothers are informally called
Friars or the Minorities.

 The emblem of the Franciscans consists of the


crossed arms of Christ and St. Francis with the image
of the cross behind it.

 The Order was influenced by Fracesco di Bernardone


or now called, St. Francis of Assisi.
 Francis began his life of penance as a hermit, devoting himself to prayer, and
rebuilding churches in the Assisi area which soon attracted other men to his company.

 By 1209, there were 12 brothers, and so they approached Pope Innocent III to gain an
approval for their way of life which created the Order of Friars Minor.
 The first 15 Franciscans that arrived in the Philippines was in 1577. They are the second
religious order to come to the country.
 Upon Arrival, they were temporarily housed by Augustinians in an Augustinian convent
in Intramuros.
 On August 2, they blessed their first church dedicated to the “Our Lady of the
Angels”

 In the Philippines their activity was tireless; they founded convents, town, and hospitals;
instructed the natives in manual labor and planned streets, bridges, canals,
aqueducts, etc.
 The missions of the Franciscans were thus interrupted for a time, but were repeatedly
renewed from the Philippines

 They initially used Bamboo, nipa,
and wood
1.) San Francisco Church

 the Mother Church of the Order of Friars


Minor (OFM), or simply known as the
"Franciscans", the most prominent group of
the Franciscan Order.
 Dedicated to the Our Lady of Angels, was
built using bamboo and nipa materials.
 the church was considered as one of
Intramuros' best. Found in the fortified walled
city of Intramuros

2.) Bay, Laguna

 made of Nipa &Bamboo


 Built by Augustinians then later transferred to
the Francisans
 Destroyed in WW2 then reconstructed
 Early Renaissance style, with semicircular
door & window openings
 Pediment has a circular window in its
tympanum

3.) Daraga, Albay

 This Baroque church has :


o beautiful stone carvings
o 4 tall twisted columns
o semicircular arches
o floral decors
o statued niches on walls &
pediment
4.) Morong Rizal (also called St. Jerome Church)

 Declared a National Treasure designed by


Chinese craftsmen

 Has a 3-storey façade & a single bell tower


 Original structure was destroyed by fire &
new one was rebuilt on present site

5.) Paco, Manila

 Originally made of Nipa & Bamboo

 October 3, 1603- burned by the


Chinese

 & so it was reconstructed using stone


materials

 February 5, 1899- bombed during


Philippine-American war

 Undergone serious damages by


earthquakes and typhoon during its
reconstruction processes
 Present one is made of concrete & still
stands today
