Design of Plate Girder: Faculty of Engineering Technology and Research

This document summarizes the design of a plate girder for a simply supported bridge deck beam with a clear span of 24m. The design considers the factored loads, selection of member sections including flange and web dimensions, and checks for moment capacity, shear capacity, shear buckling, and anchor forces at the ends. The plate girder is designed as an intermediate stiffened girder utilizing tension field action with a depth of 1400mm and other dimensions that satisfy design requirements.

Design a plate girder for a simply supported bridge deck beam with
clear span 24m, subjected to dead load 20 KN/m( excluding self weight ), live
load 10 kN/m and two concentrated loads of 200 KN each at 6m from each end.
Assume that the top compression flange of plate girder is restrained laterally
and prevented from rotating . Use Fe 415 grade steel. Design as an plate girder
with intermediate stiffeners and utilising tension field action
(1) Loading :

Total factored load on girder

= 1.5 ( 20 + 10 ) x 24 +1.5 x 2 x 200
= 1680 KN

Self weight of girder = total factored load

Factored u.d.l = 1.5 x 38.4
Total u.d.l= 20 + 10 + 8.4 = 57.6 kN/m
= 38 kN/m Factored Concentrated loads = 1.5 x 200
= 300 kN (Each)
(2) S.F and B.M calculations

Each reaction = total load

Ra = Rb = 996 kN

Maximum S.F., vZ = 996 kN

Maximum B.M. at E,

M = 996 x 12 – 58 x 12 x 6 – 300 x 6
E
