PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Provide a 380 volt, 3 phase, 4 wire, electrical service entrance rated switchboard, indoor
type free-standing construction with fixed mounted, individually mounted, circuit
breakers, power monitors, TVSS and automatic throwover system. Provide rear
accessible switchboard with a minimum, ampacity and short circuit rating as specified.

D. Equivalent British/European codes and standards may be used; however, the equivalency
shall be demonstrated and submitted by the Contractor and approved by the CM/CS.
B. It shall be the responsibility of manufacturer and supplier along with the Contractor to
conform to the seismic design requirements for this project and for the work of this
specification section.
1.05 SUBMITTALS:
1. A short circuit and coordination study for the electrical system shall be submitted
and approved in accordance with Section 16359 prior to formal switchboard
submittal.
2. A copy of this specification section with addenda and all referenced specification
sections with addenda, with each paragraph check-marked to indicate specification
compliance.
5. Spare Parts Data: Provide a list of spare parts for the material and equipment to
be provided, including current unit prices and source of supply.

A. Structure:
1. Totally enclosed switchboard dead front, free standing, front and rear aligned with
top and bottom feeds as required.
(NTS: Specify a separate incoming section for bus duct or cable entry, hot sequence
metering or bus transition to main breaker section, if required. Also, identify height of
pullbox)
B. Incoming Line, bus tie and generator breaker sections:
1. Breakers shall be, UL listed, solid state, fixed individually mounted, electrically
operated insulated case circuit breaker.
2. Main and generator breaker shall have true RMS, microprocessor based trip unit
to provide undervoltage trip, phase failure and phase reversal protection. Main
breaker and generator breaker shall be equipped with alarm switch, auxiliary
switches, long time, short time, instantaneous trip, ground fault delay and trip
adjustments.
3. Provide “push to trip” push button on circuit breaker to allow manual trip without
risking exposure to live parts.
4. Provide trip indicator to identify type of fault. Provide trip unit with LED type
display.
6. Provide mechanical pop-out type fault indicator to indicate a fault trip has
occurred, which also prevents closure of the circuit breaker after a fault event
unless reset.
7. Provide spring charging motor. The motor shall automatically charge the stored
energy mechanism when the circuit breaker closes. Provide with operation
counter, spring-charged switch, closing and opening coils and anti-pumping
function.
9. Provide breaker integral ground fault test feature to allow ground fault testing.
12. Provide normally open auxiliary contact, to indicate breaker open, close and trip
position. Auxiliary contacts shall be wired to facility PLC system.

C. Buses:
1. Line side tinned copper bus, terminals fitted with two hole, compression-type lugs
for four copper cable conductors per phase.
3. Load side tinned copper bus with rating and bracing as indicated on contract
drawings.
4. Tinned copper ground bus ¼ in. x 2 in. , (1 cm x 5 cm) extended and tied through
to all adjoining sections.
D. Feeder Sections:
1. The switchboard mounted circuit breaker branch devices shall be rear accessible
fixed mounted, individually mounted circuit breakers.
2. Feeder breakers shall be fixed mounted, molded case type breakers, manually
operated and provide thermal-magnetic, inverse-time-limit overload, and
instantaneous short circuit protection. U.L. listed circuit breakers conforming to
NEMA Std. ABI.
3. The circuit breaker connections to the distribution bussing shall be such that the
connections grip the bus bars firmly under high-fault conditions.
5. Provide covers for gutter space and future breaker space with formed sheet steel.
C. The system shall have draw-out multi-tap transformers connected to normal and generator
bus sides. The multi-tap transformers shall be sized to handle the load of the system and
to provide control power to operate the switchboard power monitoring units and the
electrically operated breakers.
1. Adjustable time delay for transition normal to generator and generator to normal
from 0 to 120 seconds, to allow disconnection of the load during transfer in either
direction to prevent excessive inrush currents due to out-of-phase switching of
large inductive loads.

12. Normal power source and generator power source phase rotation sensing.
1. The transfer control system shall automatically transfer its load circuit to the
standby power supply upon failure of its normal source. After normal source
2. When the normal source has been restored to 90% of rated voltage, and after a
time delay, adjustable from 0.5 to 32 minutes the standby source breaker shall
open. After an adjustable time delay the normal source breaker shall close.
3. A time delay, adjustable from 0.5 to 32 minutes, shall delay shutdown of the
standby power generator after retransfer to allow the generator to run unloaded
for cool-down, after which the generator shall be automatically shut down.
4. Should the standby power fail while carrying the load, the standby source breaker
shall open instantaneously upon restoration of the normal source to satisfactory
conditions. After an adjustable time delay the normal source breaker shall close.
1. While in manual mode, breakers shall be capable of being opened and closed using
control switches. Electrical interlocking shall be provided to prevent the closing of
both mains simultaneously.
A. Provide Kirk-Key interlock between switchboard feeder breakers and motor control
centers as required..
B. Sides, top and rear covers shall be code gauge steel, bolted to the switchboard structure.
C. The frame structure members shall be die-formed, 12-gage steel bolted together and
reinforced at corners with rugged gussets internal and external to the structure members.
E. Switchboard shall include all protective devices as specified in these specifications with
necessary interconnection, instrumentation and control wiring.
G. The vertical main bus bars are furnished for future branch devices. Device mounting bolts
and bus connecting straps are supplied with future unit devices. Full height bus bars shall
be supplied.
I. All steel surfaces shall be chemically cleaned and pre-treated with an iron-phosphate pre-
treatment or equivalent process, providing a bond between paint and metal surfaces to
help prevent the entrance of moisture and formation of rust under the paint. The
switchboard exterior shall be finished with ANSI-61 light gray paint. Provide touch-up
paint for coatings nicks and scratches after installation and testing.
J. Control wiring, fuse blocks and terminal blocks within the switchboard shall be furnished
when required. All control wires leaving the switchboard shall be provided with terminal
blocks with numbering strips.
K. All hardware used on conductors shall have a high tensile strength, and a protective finish.
L. Switchboard shall be provided with lifting means, and capable of being rolled or moved
into installation position and bolted directly to floor sills.
M. Make provision for conduit and cable entrance from top or bottom as indicated on the
drawings.
A. Provide steel channel sills with drilled holes for mounting, aligning and bolting
switchboard in place. Method of mounting as indicated. Provide in size recommended by
switchboard manufacturer and acceptable to Engineer.
B. Shop paint completed sills with two coats of a polyamide epoxy coating with a minimum
dry film thickness of 2.5 mils per coat or before setting in place.

A. The switchboard shall be completely assembled, wired, adjusted, temporarily powered and
tested at the factory. Provide test results for approval.
B. The fully assembled switchboard shall be given operational, dielectric, and all other
standard tests.
(NTS: Delete transfer switch if not part of switchboard assembly).
2.09 WIRING:
A. Conductors: Copper; size as required by load, except that no control wire is smaller than
No. 14 AWG (2.5 mm2). Use insulation that is flame retardant, and moisture and heat
resistant.
B. Cables and conductors: Bundled and tie wrapped securely in wireways furnished.
E. Terminal Blocks:
1. Rated 600 volt for power with current rating as required by loads.
A. Provide switchboard section and breakers with engraved nameplates. Provide nameplates
with nomenclature labels as indicted on the Contract Drawings.
B. Provide nameplates of laminated sheet plastic, 1/16-in. thick, engraved to provide white
letters on black background. Fasten nameplates in place with corrosion resistant screws.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Provide all material, equipment, and labor to install switchboard as indicated and as
specified.
B. Install equipment on channels set flush with concrete pads. Set and level channel sills in
block-outs in the equipment pad. After leveling channel sills, grout sills. Equipment may
not be set on sills until grout is cured.
D. Paint completed sills with two coats of polyamide epoxy paint or other acceptable
corrosion-resistant finish before setting in place.
A. Provide checkout, field, and functional testing in accordance with Sections 16050 and
16998.
B. Testing shall be performed under Section 16998 with assistance from Manufacturer's
representative.
C. Field testing to include opening, closing, and tripping of circuit breakers in accordance
with the method of operation as shown on accepted shop drawings.
D. Perform breaker open, close, and trip operation. Verify breaker operation in accordance
approved shop drawing schematics.
